Brexit

How will this end?

I'm 56, have lived outside the UK for 25 years and now have permanent residency in Portugal along with an Irish passport so in theory I'm not affected by what's now happening in the UK.

But I am so sad and angry in turn by how the country is being torn apart and for what? An issue that had a 6% ranking in people's concerns before the 2015 election now consumes every newspaper headline, every online conversation, every TV news show with no end in site. Any ending - deal, no deal, revoke, will not end the chaos, hatred and division.

I'm not quite sure what I'm asking because I can't see an end to this in my lifetime and that is horrendous.

OP posts:

'loving and caring' for her family, and telling people who are worried about food and medical shortages to 'get a fucking grip'.

typical no deal brexiteer

Tolleshunt · 13/09/2019 07:11

Peanuts who are you to tell people their emotions are OTT?

You might care nothing for the fabric of our society, and be too ignorant to be able to assess the magnitude of the risks we are facing (and all for what, exactly?), but many, many others do find this ridiculous self-immolation utterly heartbreaking. Own your actions.

FlyingFlamingo · 13/09/2019 07:13

At least when my children and grandchildren ask me where I was I can say I did something Peanut. I didn’t just sit on my hands and say ‘lalalala not listening’.

And should we really only worry about things as they immediately happen then? Rather than prepare for them? Because that doesn’t make a lot of sense now does it?

Peanutbuttericecream · 13/09/2019 07:15

I genuinely believe it’s pointless getting so upset, it really isn’t helping anything.

Have you upset people written to the government. Have you been to see your MP? I can’t think of anything else you could try.

smemorata · 13/09/2019 07:16

Peanut - people have already died and more will die if there is a no deal Brexit. We are allowed to find that heartbreaking especially when you look at the whole picture of families and communities traumatized and of course the millions of pounds wasted.

TheClitterati · 13/09/2019 07:16

The English Brexiteers I've met are like Peanut. They give no fucks about UK, NI or Scotland. It's all about rabid English nationalism.

Tolleshunt · 13/09/2019 07:19

Yes, peanut, I am in weekly communication with my MP, have signed petitions and attended marches. I tweet and post here. It doesn’t magically make me feel less appalled, astonished or heartbroken, I’m afraid. Just can’t get my head around wilfully choosing a far less prosperous future for ourselves.

Helmetbymidnight · 13/09/2019 07:21

ive seen you previously wanting no deal brexit. and now you think its appropriate to tell people to 'get a fucking grip'

if only you knew how thick you are.

minesagin37 · 13/09/2019 07:26

They are predicting a 30-40% drop in supply through Dover as lorries are backlogged. That will therefore limit medication and food supply. Those individuals who keep saying 'stop over reacting'. Have you actually read any of the information?

bookworm14 · 13/09/2019 07:28

It’s becsude I fucking love and care for my family that I’m so frightened, peanut. Don’t you get that? My youngest sister has T1 diabetes along with various other conditions. If the supply of insulin is interrupted, she could die. I rely on medication for my Crohn’s disease that is made in Germany. If I can’t get hold of it, I could be hospitalised and need surgery. Who will ‘love and care for’ my DD if I can’t work or look after her because I’m too ill? How will I keep her healthy if there are no fresh fruit or veg available? How will her school be able to operate if it can’t feed its pupils?

These predictions aren’t ‘remoaner’ scaremongering; they’re the government’s own predictions. Can you not see why people are scared? I wish I could get on with my life as you suggest without feeling this constant level of fear, but I can’t.

bookworm14 · 13/09/2019 07:30

And yes, I know my MP personally and she knows how I feel. I know she will vote the right way. There’s nothing else I can do.

minesagin37 · 13/09/2019 07:30

Link not working. See other thread.

ChardonnaysDistantCousin · 13/09/2019 07:34

I’ll just carry on trying to get on with my life, loving and caring for my family and friends and just ticking along. 🤔

Is that the Brexit Live Love Laugh?

Good luck with that when it all kicks off.

FlyingFlamingo · 13/09/2019 07:41

Yes, I have met with my MP (during a local protest, I luckily have one of the sensible ones). I’ve emailed him. I’ve protested. I’m not sure why you have to be so patronising about it.

Dh has also applied for settled status. Which isn’t that reassuring to be honest given that all he’s got to prove that he will continue to have the right to live and work here and access services is an email that says ‘this is not proof of right to remain in the U.K.’ Hmm

We are being led into hell by the incompetents that people like you voted for. So thanks for that!

Tolleshunt · 13/09/2019 07:41

Those reliant on medication (or even food, ffs) will not have the option of ‘just ticking along’.

Breathtaking naivety and delusion.

frumpety · 13/09/2019 07:43

No Deal = years of negotiating
WA, a Deal, transition = years of negotiating
Revoke = everyone carries on caring for and loving their family and friends and Brexit is never mentioned in polite company again. Smile

EssentialHummus · 13/09/2019 07:48

I feel the same as you op (foreigner, EU national, living in the uk for a decade). All terribly sad, unnecessary, incendiary and futile.

falcon5 · 13/09/2019 07:51

It also seems impossible to bridge the gap between people who feel we are leaving something worthwhile but with problems and those who see no merit in it.
The argument has become entrenched and linked to many other cultural aspects. I saw a post in a local Facebook page complaining that those protesting about prorogation were probably "left wing teachers and gps".
Disclosure: I voted for leave, never expecting we would do anything harder than Norway. I didn't care, in fact I believe FOM is a benefit, it was a pushback on ever closer union and I expected to lose but give DC more power than if a remain landslide. Frankly, I was an idiot.

Thereisasystem · 13/09/2019 07:59

Well thanks for completing diminishing the way I expressed my feelings towards Brexit on the opening page Peanut . Do you listen to the news, BBC right now speaking about how disruptive and expensive No Deal will be. Do you eat? Your food will go up by 4-5,%, do you drive a car? Fuel supply disrupted, value of the pound drops even farther. Medication? Nah you don't care as clearly none of your precious family ever get ill.

Do you read the financial reports, CBI articles, watch Newsnight, listen to Evan Davies? I suspect not, so you are ill informed and callous to boot.

Lastly did you lie awake loathing the EU for decades before we left? I suspect not either....

Thereisasystem · 13/09/2019 08:01

falcon5 Flowers please don't be so hard on yourself, very few of us could have foreseen this, most are horrified as to how it is playing out.

minesagin37 · 13/09/2019 08:06

No some of us did foresee it! Many leave voters need this wake up call. Being hard on yourself is better than completely naive and delusional!

Helmetbymidnight · 13/09/2019 08:06

oh ive no beef at all with leave voters, its brexiteers like peanut who understand nothing that are screwing us.

KennDodd · 13/09/2019 08:14

@falcon5

Please write to your MP, speak to people irl, call radio phone-in's. Leave voters are the only ones who can turn this around.

KennDodd · 13/09/2019 08:15

And thank you for being brave enough to rethink.
