Brexit

How will this end?

I'm 56, have lived outside the UK for 25 years and now have permanent residency in Portugal along with an Irish passport so in theory I'm not affected by what's now happening in the UK.

But I am so sad and angry in turn by how the country is being torn apart and for what? An issue that had a 6% ranking in people's concerns before the 2015 election now consumes every newspaper headline, every online conversation, every TV news show with no end in site. Any ending - deal, no deal, revoke, will not end the chaos, hatred and division.

I'm not quite sure what I'm asking because I can't see an end to this in my lifetime and that is horrendous.

It's utterly heartbreaking, it could be avoided still but people are too proud and stubborn to just admit it is a huge mistake. Devastating.

Unescorted · 12/09/2019 21:47

Badly

DorisTheFlorist · 12/09/2019 22:07

This is how it ends.....

We don't leave on 30st Oct
GE called
Leaver vote splits between Tories and Brexit Party
Labour vote collapses due to Corbyn being a useless fucker
LibDem coalition government, Jo Swinson PM
Article 50 revoked
Brexiters get so upset their brains explode. No one notices
X Factor series 23453 starts.

eurochick · 12/09/2019 22:12

Doris might well have it.

I personally think the only way out is another referendum. If leave wins again I think most remainders will accept it and mps will get behind leaving. If Remain wins, Brexit will be cancelled and there will be a lot of frothing from Farage and the gammons for a while but it will die down pretty quickly.

Miljah · 12/09/2019 23:19

sarah, can you link to the 6% concern figure?

I've been saying this to shrill, rabid Leavers for months, that you didn't care about the EU before the UKIP dog whistle.

They seem to think they've been campaigning for decades.

SwedishEdith · 12/09/2019 23:24

The 6% is possibly from here. Only 6% had it as their top concern pre-referendum.

Ilikewinter · 12/09/2019 23:34

What happens if remain wins and then all the leavers kick up a fuss...do we get to go for round 3 ??!!

BlackeyedGruesome · 13/09/2019 00:07

We have had a second referendum, the first was in the seventies. The next referendum will be round three

TorchesTorches · 13/09/2019 05:40

Sarahlou i agree with you. I have lived outside the UK for 6 years and have (recently) got EU citizenship for my country of residence. Its been a 3 year journey to get it, but i shake my head at the madness and am so glad to be safe and secure now. I feel so desperately sorry the the country i was born and brought up in and still love, is being screwed over so spectacularly.

TheClitterati · 13/09/2019 05:52

This will never end will it - it's going to play out forever.

I see 2 possible "endings".

it will end in the disintegration of the UK. Little England will be sad & alone at last (ok perhaps with Wales). Scotland will be EU MS, NI will reunify with Ireland and be EU MS.

Or perhaps we will have 2nd ref with strong revoke result, the end of the Conservative party and a change to proportional representation.

minesagin37 · 13/09/2019 05:58

Well be thankful you can get another passport. Imagine how you would feel if your stuck with these losers!

Get a fucking grip. Heartbreaking and devastating is what happened in Manchester to that poor baby.

lonelyplanetmum · 13/09/2019 06:30

More than one thing can be heartbreaking and devastating, Peanut.

Helmetbymidnight · 13/09/2019 06:42

youve used up your heart-breading and devastating allowance. Confused

we have to say food and medical shortages are exciting and full of possibilities.

Peanutbuttericecream · 13/09/2019 06:48

Yes but let’s get this into some sort of perspective. No one knows what will happen if we leave with a no deal and it might not come to that. Worrying is futile. Being heartbroken and devastated is completely OTT.

Helmetbymidnight · 13/09/2019 06:50

'get a fucking grip'.

thats how it is in the uk now. its a right wing coup supported by the thick.

HoneysuckIejasmine · 13/09/2019 06:52

I'll be pretty fucking heartbroken if my brother and I can't get our medication. I'll become disabled. He'll die. Sounds devastating to me.

Peanutbuttericecream · 13/09/2019 06:56

I just think everyone should calm down. Some of it is scaremongering and nothing has happened yet.

FlyingFlamingo · 13/09/2019 06:58

Get a grip? GET A GRIP?

Have you seen the governments own predictions? Not project fear - their own report (not that there is much difference - project fear is about come project reality and we are all about to be dragged down with you). Forgive me for being a little concerned about medicine and food shortages, fuel riots and the loss of my right to freely travel in 28 countries. And what gets me the most is that this is path we have chosen for ourselves.

We are just sleepwalking into disaster and half the population are either oblivious or actually WANT this. I am so angry and sad and worried right now and you telling me to get a grip is the icing on the cake. The one I won’t be able to buy in a few weeks time because of the aforementioned numpties that voted for this and continue shout for.

No. I won’t get a grip. I will however continue to protest against this. As futile as it seems at times it’s all I have.

dimsum123 · 13/09/2019 06:58

I can't see this ending for a long time, even a GE or referendum might not resolve it as we'd have a hung parliament or another 50/50 vote.

This limbo might become the new normal and we'll just have to learn to live with it. But at least we won't have left.

Helmetbymidnight · 13/09/2019 06:59

peanut wants a no deal brexit.

sadly, she hasn't got the intelligence to work out what it means so she has to pretend its great and say 'get a fucking grip' to anyone who is worried.

Helmetbymidnight · 13/09/2019 07:01

op, there are hundreds of thousands of 'peanuts' in britain now.
its frightening.

Mistigri · 13/09/2019 07:05

I don't see any way out right now.

I don't think we will have another referendum but if we do, I am concerned about how it will be run and what it will ask. The UK's institutions are not strong enough right now to police a referendum. The electoral commission has no teeth, and the case referred to the Met Police regarding the referendum THREE YEARS AGO is being sat on.

I think this ends in a series of GEs leading to hung parliaments, and possibly many more years of this nonsense (even if we revoke).

Peanutbuttericecream · 13/09/2019 07:07

Okay then, carry on being anxious, heartbroken, devastated etc., and see where it gets you. Is it helping anything?

I’ll just carry on trying to get on with my life, loving and caring for my family and friends and just ticking along. 🤔

Helmetbymidnight · 13/09/2019 07:08

youre a fucking no deal brexiteer.
