I haven't read the whole thread yet so am inevitably repeating views but Johnson and the Tories self interest is paramount in every decision. The country's interests are subsidiary.
Johnson wants to be our captain for a decent chunk of time. Hence he wants a GE.
The ERG are now in control having progressively ousted many moderates since 2017. They want a capitalist corporate free for all with no interference from basic regulations protecting individuals.
For these reasons they want a GE (if they can win it) not another ref.
In fact what they'd really like is to extend the current term under some emergency powers not a GE really. I'm surprised they haven't tried this.
As we know the 2016 ref was deeply flawed. It was not a vote on any future trading arrangement. All it was (in reality) was the question do you want to explore the options for dropping EU membership or continue the current membership . It was a vote to investigate potential paths for leaving, not a vote for any particular path.
No political party would agree but a logical step might be when we have a GE ,in addition to the poll card, have a non binding ( advisory) questionnaire too. A sort of pollerendum or survey sheet with tick boxes seeking detailed complex views on the elements of an arrangement each voter envisages.
Would never happen ...
and would require those voters who are casually disinterested to get up to speed.
