AIBU to say that “Bringing Brexit to an oEnd” is an OUTRIGHT LIE

“We need to bring Brexit to an end on October 31st”

I keep hearing this.

But if we leave on October 31st with the WA or no deal it will only be the start of years and years of negotiation! Years and years of politicians arguing about our future arrangement with the EU instead of concentrating on NHS, schools, adult social care, prisons.

Years and years of what we’ve had to suffer for the last 3 years!

I can’t bear itSad

No-one, apart from you, seems to think that means it'll all be hunky dory. People know that the real issues begin then, and they want to get on with it.

In that case why does anyone want it? What will anyone (apart from the super rich like BJ, Gove and JRM) gain from it in their everyday lives? Nobody can ever come up with any tangible benefits, you just get “we just need to get out”

It’s fecking infuriating Angry

'Let's get Brexit done' is a pleb-friendly mind meme, introduced with a great deal of cynicism to infect the brains of the credulous.

YANBU!

megletthesecond · 29/09/2019 11:20

Yanbu. That's when the mess and repercussions will become obvious.

Snowy111 · 29/09/2019 11:25

And yet again Boris on Andrew Marr this morning said the only way to relieve the current angst is to...

“Bring It to an end”...
“Get Brexit done”...

...on October 31st.

What a load of bollocks! Him and his ilk are the ones that think the British public is thick, and unfortunately their lies appeal to so many people.

So they can make a personal fortune when the economy is trashed, whilst millions suffer.

Yes, it's not the end, it's just the beginning of years of austerity that make rhe last few years look like we were abundantly rich.

Technically we will have exited eu, so yes, brexit is done. But equally that's the least of it. The real problems would start after.

Not least the people screaming for it, then screaming they were lied to, that they can't afford to feed their kids, or loosing their homes or jobs and they Weren't told this,

When they were, many times.

WrongKindOfFace · 29/09/2019 11:47

You are absolutely right, OP. Every post about no deal being a ‘clean break’ makes me furious. It won’t be the end, it’ll only be the beginning, you utter plank.

GhostofFrankGrimes · 29/09/2019 11:50

So we've given up on "winning" and claiming prizes/unicorns we just want the glorious game to end abruptly? Never will the word Brexit be ushered again after 31/10? Weird.

Parker231 · 29/09/2019 12:28

Most people don’t appear to have a clue about what leaving the EU actually means and how badly they will be affected.

ListeningQuietly · 29/09/2019 14:13

Mangoes
That is an excellent analogy.

It is as if people have forgotten that after Brexit they will have a smelly baby to look after for the next 20 years Grin

BeardedMum · 29/09/2019 14:49

YANBU I hope the leavers will suffer the most and feel the consequences of what they voted for. I feel sorry for everyone else dragged down with them....

MonnaLisa · 29/09/2019 16:09

YANBU and agree with BeardedMum

MonnaLisa · 29/09/2019 16:10

Also excellent analogy with the baby!!

”The only way to put a stop to it is to revoke”

Good luck in telling 17.4 million they can't have Brexit.

Those are two different things. You can have Brexit, but it won’t be done on 1st Nov, whether we leave with a deal or not.

Or you can have it “done”, ie never hear about the sodding topic ever again, but the only way for that to happen within the next month would be to revoke.

Most people who I talk to who say they “want it done” mean the second option, never hearing another word about it and getting back to normal government, running the NHS etc. They are not particularly fussed about whether we leave or stay, they are just sick to the back teeth of hearing about it. I’m well aware that other people have stronger views re: leaving, but they aren’t usually expressed as “being sick of Brexit”.

ListeningQuietly · 29/09/2019 19:34

As I said on another thread
how will the 17.4 million know when Brexit has happened ?

What if you told them it had (with the cake and eat it too option)
but actually revoke had happened

without reading legislation.gov.uk
HOW WOULD THEY TELL IN THEIR DAY TO DAY LIVES ?

Parker231 · 29/09/2019 19:52

They would know when there was limited fresh fruit and vegetables in the shops, petrol prices rose drastically with potential shortages. If they work in manufacturing their supply chain would probably be impacted and they may be on reduced hours or under the threat of redundancy. If they are reliant on specific drugs, they may have trouble getting their prescription filled.

And that’s for starters.

What the UK could look like after a no deal Brexit

www.bloomberg.com/news/features/2019-09-25/what-happens-the-day-after-a-no-deal-brexit

ListeningQuietly · 29/09/2019 20:15

Parker
Read my post
how would people tell if any Brexit deal had happened
if a BINO / revoke happened
but it was sold as a hard brexit
how people tell
seriously - the lack on understanding of the system leaves such announcements open to total abuse thankfully

MysteryTripAgain · 30/09/2019 02:03

Can I borrow your crystal ball. Should be able to make a few billion by end of the week if your crystal ball is any good.

Walkingdeadfangirl · 30/09/2019 02:43

Brexit means leaving the EU.

We can get this done in October.
Any negotiations after are a separate thing, civil servants can argue themselves raw after that.
As long as we get this sorted next month. I have had ENOUGH.

HerSymphonyAndSong · 30/09/2019 05:25

What are you going to do if we don’t leave on 31st October?

Parker231 · 30/09/2019 06:46

I really can’t see the UK leaving by 31 October - there’s no sign of a proposal let alone time for all at the EU and our MP’s to discuss and agree it. Boris has left it too late. The Benn Bill will come into force.

frumpety · 30/09/2019 07:21

Listening makes a good point.

We are in a no brexit scenario at the moment and have been for many years. Other than the ramped up rhetoric and shouty politics, where we are now is how no Brexit looks like. A bit boring if truth be told, normal, mundane and steady. I quite like the country like that.

If you want excitement, can I suggest white water rafting ? Grin

merrymouse · 30/09/2019 08:01

Any negotiations after are a separate thing, civil servants can argue themselves raw after that.
As long as we get this sorted next month.

If it were the responsibility of civil servants to sort something out themselves - the most practical beneficial agreement as long as it met the terms of the referendum - we would have left by now and have something like Norway +.

However, the terms of any agreement are a political matter and this is likely to go on for years. Leaving without a deal does not sort anything out.

A bit boring if truth be told, normal, mundane and steady. I quite like the country like that.

I don't think the current limbo is stable. Businesses and people need to be able to plan. At the moment we can't say with certainty how the country will be functioning in 6 weeks, never mind 6 years. However, as the OP says, the government is lying when it says that leaving without a deal would change that situation.

It's just the same limbo with added chaos.

Snowy111 · 30/09/2019 15:11

Leaving without a deal does not sort anything out

It’s just the same old limbo with added chaos

^absolutely right

I think there’s two types of “leavers”

  1. Those who religiously and dogmatically want leave and sense that it will be taken away from them if they don’t sever ties ASAP
  2. Those who don’t really care and are sick of hearing about it

It’s category 2 that will believe the lies about “getting Brexit done”, and who don’t really grasp the awful consequences in the short term, and don’t realise it’s going to take years to recover economically, and sort out the future relationship.
