Brexit

AIBU to say that “Bringing Brexit to an oEnd” is an OUTRIGHT LIE

“We need to bring Brexit to an end on October 31st”

I keep hearing this.

But if we leave on October 31st with the WA or no deal it will only be the start of years and years of negotiation! Years and years of politicians arguing about our future arrangement with the EU instead of concentrating on NHS, schools, adult social care, prisons.

Years and years of what we’ve had to suffer for the last 3 years!

I can’t bear itSad

Literally nobody except for Rory Stewart makes this point. Stupid journalists, stupider politicians. I despair too!

DippyAvocado · 06/09/2019 07:42

Yes, years and years of negotiations and building new trading arrangements. The only ways to stop focussing on would be to cancel it altogether or go for something with an existing mechanism like EEA+CU.

Snowy111 · 06/09/2019 07:56

I can’t believe I missed climate change off that list!

There’s so many more important things that need sorting rather than spending years on Brexit Angry

Absolutely! At least a decade of negotiations will follow so not even Brexit will! solve Brexit!

All these idiots who say "we just want it done" or "we just want it over" should have a look at the average time it takes to make a trade deal.

Hardly anyone appreciates the time saved and the efficiency (yes the efficiency!) and other benefits that being in the EU brings us, especially with regard to trade, and when they do start to appreciate it will be because everything is more complicated and more expensive owing to the fact we will have left, and by then it will be too late! Sad AngrySad

HeadsDownThumbsUpEveryone · 06/09/2019 08:19

Nope not unreasonable in the slightest. I expect it to be at least a decade before deals are made and even then some details will probably still be being hashed out by the time children born this year will be old enough to vote.

But don't worry because it'll all be done and finished on the 31st of October and we will magically wake up to new agreements and great deals. Hmm

Lifebi · 06/09/2019 08:31

Totally agree. Can't believe our right wing dominated media aren't highlighting this ... oh wait!

MysteryTripAgain · 06/09/2019 09:35

To OP

Even if a WA is agreed, it is only the beginning. Many years of work to follow. Between 5 and 10 I would say.

Notonthestairs · 06/09/2019 09:40

But with WA there would be transitional arrangements.

MangoesAreMyFavourite · 06/09/2019 17:27

Absolutely! It reminds me of when I had Dd1. I was so focussed on the birth that I was shocked when I then had a baby to look after forever!
At some level I thought the birth was the end of it.

Whenever and however we leave, it will just be the start of a long process of negotiations.

Snowy111 · 06/09/2019 18:21

As PP has said, the only end to Brexit is if there is revoke. This could happen either through a people’s vote (risky) or by the remain parties sticking together and organising remain candidates to stand against tories and brexit party in individual constituencies in an election. I think if votes are split eg if you don’t know whether to vote labour, liberal or green in your constituency, that will fail.

I am worried that even if we get a mandate to revoke, Nigel farage will never go away!

But the best way to have any way of putting an end to this is definitely revoke. WA or no deal will waste years, and (especially no deal) will be very painful for many vulnerable people.

Snowy111 · 06/09/2019 18:27

I agree stairs, at least the WA allows a transitional period which will reduce the pain of Brexit, but it will still go on for years. At least if we sign up to WA we will be negotiating on an amicable basis, whereas if we have no deal, the EU will start from a hostile position, and the first thing they will want to sort out is the UK paying their debts.

OP posts:
Snowy111 · 06/09/2019 18:29

Mangoes that is a very good analogy. Less people would choose to have kids if they knew how hard it would beGrin. Bit like Brexit Grin

Only I’m not sure whether (like having kids) it’s worth it in the end Hmm

As 31 October draws ever nearer I am hearing more and more of this - “clean break” etc.

A no deal Brexit will not be the end, it will be the beginning of years more pain and argument over the future arrangements with the EU.

The only way to put a stop to it is to revoke.

The only way to put a stop to it is to revoke

Good luck in telling 17.4 million they can't have Brexit.

meditrina · 26/09/2019 07:23

It's not a lie.

It's not even inaccurate.

They want Brexit to happen and to leave.

No-one, apart from you, seems to think that means it'll all be hunky dory. People know that the real issues begin then, and they want to get on with it.

Assuming those who disagree with you are both thick and liars is the language of division, and I'm out of patience with it.

(And no, I didn't vote Leave)

SnuggyBuggy · 26/09/2019 07:24

It's never going to end

frumpety · 26/09/2019 07:28

I think people are saying things like 'clean break' and 'end to Brexit ' because the population is tiring of the whole thing and to keep the momentum going on the Leave side they need people to think there is going to be a fantastic fanfared finale, everyone saying these things knows they are not true.
We passed the point where truth matters a long time ago though.

frumpety · 26/09/2019 07:32

Brexit is like a political MLM.

Imnotthrowingawaymyshot · 26/09/2019 07:41

I agree with this. There will be the real work to be done once we are out.
However I think for the UK, to leave, will emotionally and mentally help us to move on.

BackInTime · 26/09/2019 07:43

Agreed. 'Clean break', 'lets get Brexit done',
'Do or die' all Cummings propaganda to invoke the idea that if we leave on 31/10 all the Brexit talk and arguments will stop and all will be wonderful. We will be waving Union Jacks and our Blue passports, celebrating our great victory over the EU Germans.

StarbucksSmarterSister · 26/09/2019 07:52

People know that the real issues begin then

But they don't. I've mentioned this to so many people recently, both leavers and remainers and most of them didn't have a clue how long it could take. Some even thought that the WA meant we would have all deals in place - permanently, not transitional.

None of them are stupid, just politically unaware.

Yaralie · 26/09/2019 11:19

This "get brexit done" slogan actually means "get it started so we would be harmed even more for years and years"

Most people are fed up with brexit and want it to stop.

The LibDems would, if they won an election, stop brexit by revoking Article 50 on day one..

OhYouBadBadKitten · 26/09/2019 12:06

Yanbu.

DorisDaysDadsDogsDead · 26/09/2019 12:45

YANBU. This "clean break" that repeatedly goes unchallenged in the media is a deliberate lie told by self interested parties, to try and keep Quitlings in the dark pushing for their tax avoidance scheme no deal wet dream.

And, unfortunately, the number of people falling for it rather adds to the "all leavers are thick" narrative that the Quitlings so hate.

DickKerrLadies · 26/09/2019 12:48

I'd like to have a definition of what Brexit means other than "Brexit means Brexit". One day we'll find out. Maybe.
