Westminstenders: Drain The Swamp

Johnson lost his first vote by 27.

The Commons take control again, and Johnson is now, with his majority gone, is seeking an election.

Whilst the feeling might be one of victory there is a definite sting in the tail.

Johnson has purged the party of 'trouble makers', meaning any replacements after an election are hard liners. And they will be in safe seats. Possibly many of which will be careerists parachuted in.

The party has split. The civil war is over.

Parliament has just lost some of its very best minds in the process. That bodes ill for us all in the long term. The polarisation has just jacked up a level. The centre has fallen even more.

There are no more moderates.

Polling suggests that Johnson won't be blamed for any of this and that's significant.

Take note of this tweet

Douglas Carswell @Douglascarswell
Boris Vs the political Parasites. Guess who wins across suburban Britain?

The optics are not about what you or I are seeing. Nor about what any of the politicial pundits are seeing.

The Democrats and the Media failed to see Trump coming... And this is what now concerns me. His optics are not bad with his core and targets.

Will Johnson be able to have his election?

If yes, I fear the polls look good for Johnson. People want 'Brexit over with' and don't want another extension. They may or may not understand the ramifications of that.

If no, then what? Johnson can do anything with his numbers. Does that mean potentially two governments and the Queen stuck in the middle? Or does he limp on, with no intention of doing anything but take us over the cliff by counting down the clock?

Or something else?

The Brexit Party and Conservatives now seem to have formally united one way or another. They have aligned with current politics alike the divided Opposition parties.

Tonight the penny might have dropped with a few Labour MPs too. They want May's deal to return. Its the only deal there is, in the absence of a Johnson plan and a Labour / Opposition plan. Too little too late...

This isn't going away as an issue either. Stoking up anger against the rebel alliance is a long term project for the fascist right.

Is tonight’s result a victory? Yes, but my fear is its potential to be a Pyrrhic Victory.

The battle today may have been won, but Johnson still looks set to win...

Well, if what we’re seeing is the self-destruction and final end of the Tory party, it’s a tragic shame that it’s taking so long and dragging the country down with it.

I wonder if Cummings has overplayed his hand and made too many enemies already. What, 6 weeks? How long did Bannon last before Trump sacked him?

Another good idea from Led by Donkeys:

Was it in Soap that they had the line 'confused? you will be'? That's pretty much how I feel at the moment. I need an Idiot's Guide to who's doing what to who, how and why, how often etc etc.

prettybird · 04/09/2019 09:11

....hence the variants with all the cats (another typo) Grin. Also serves to lighten the mood/give some pleasure in these otherwise serious times.

BackInTime · 04/09/2019 09:11

There is no analysis of any situation or story. Headlines only please.

Sadly this is true of much of the country, which is why the media have so much sway and so much to answer for in this mess. If it is written in the paper then it must be true or if they are on the BBC saying xyz and sounding posh and clever then it certainly also means that it must be true. Also with more and more people reading news online they are more and more like to just see sensationalist headlines and just keep scrolling through without actually taking in what's going on behind it.

peridito · 04/09/2019 09:12

I'd like to ask what PV stands for .

Metempsychosis · 04/09/2019 09:12

I agree about the elderly care stress on the NHS. I recently spent a Saturday night in the A&E department of a moderately rough provincial city with a relative who was having a serious medical crisis. I was shocked to see that the corridors weren’t full of the drunk young men I was expecting, but a load of very elderly patients who’d fallen or had some other health crisis.

Songsofexperience · 04/09/2019 09:15

The worst thing is getting the british citizenship doesnt protect you for that either.

It's all about the accent, isn't it? And even then it's about being 'Other'.

I mentioned this a while back but one comment which really chilled me after the ref was a semi-joke from someone who hadn't twigged I was not originally British until I said it and told me I was 'the worst kind' of immigrant as I couldn't be 'spotted' as such...

Lisette1940 · 04/09/2019 09:15

PMK

borntobequiet · 04/09/2019 09:17

PV is People's Vote

Emilyontmoor · 04/09/2019 09:18

even more health care rationing which basically meant that the elderly weren't going to get certain treatments and children would be be prioritised.

The Consultant admitted that is already happening. My DD has had heroic cutting edge care for a very traumatic injury but he said that were she over 60 they would not have gone that extra mile. Quite sobering when you are a physically active 60+ year old that without the money to pay for the cutting edge treatment you would basically be written off to a life of pain and early arthritis.

HesterThrale · 04/09/2019 09:18

PV = People’s Vote.

It is confusing. There’s a thread with all the abbreviations on; I’ll have a look for it.

prettybird · 04/09/2019 09:18

There's a separate thread in the Brexit topic with the Westministenders abbreviations. Unfortunately, I'm on the app so can't link to it.

RedToothBrush · 04/09/2019 09:19

The worst thing is getting the british citizenship doesnt protect you for that either.

Nor does actually being British!

As NI and Scotland will testify.

And being English (or any of the other home nations) living abroad.

Or married to someone who isn't English - God forbid you have children with them.

Or being English with the wrong skin colour.

Or being English and expressing appreciation for foreign culture.

oh thank you !

I kept translating it in my head as Parliamentary Vote and thinking ????

AnxietyDream · 04/09/2019 09:20

They are all kind, generous, lovely people...

I'm sorry, but reading that reminds me of all the relationship threads on here were a woman goes on about how lovely her dh is 'apart from this one issue' before launching into a description of a verbally abusive controlling arsehole.

'Lovely people' do not vote to harm the poor/elderly/disabled/foreigners, 'lovely people' don't vote purely out of self interest. Selfish arseholes can appear lovely in any number of ways when it's about them and theirs, but they reveal themselves in their actions, and there is nothing 'lovely' about it.

Songsofexperience · 04/09/2019 09:22

I agree, those supporting fascism must have a darkness in them to do so.

RedToothBrush · 04/09/2019 09:22

Well, if what we’re seeing is the self-destruction and final end of the Tory party

Do you really believe this?

Have you looked at polls or talked to people about this?

I wish it was. Not buying it at all though.

PMK and also @RedToothBrush I agree with everything you've been saying on this thread.

prettybird · 04/09/2019 09:23

Dh's 86 year old mum has just spent 3 weeks in hospital simply because she got knocked over by the automatic door of a chemist (where ironically she was going to get an antibiotic prescription for a UTI Shock) and suffered major bruising. Sad

Basilpots · 04/09/2019 09:26

Red He's doing great in the job. Excellent even.

This is where I am. Even JRM has his fans, on here we rightly called him out on his appalling attitude others will see it as a massive V to the establishment in an unmistakable JRM style.

Your average Westminsterender is not the target audience.

Are there enough of that audience in the right places to hand the Tory’s a majority via the BXP. Quite possibly.

I work in what is a pretty poor working class area amongst those I work with they prefer Boris and JRM to Corbyn. The turn out in this constituency was barely 50% in 2017 the sitting Labour MP has a cushion of a couple of thousand votes. Not hard to see how this seat aided and abetted by BXP could turn blue next time round.

eladen · 04/09/2019 09:26

Thanks Myriade

DGRossetti · 04/09/2019 09:26

I wonder if coining the name "Rebel Alliance" and then trying to "be funny" by calling it the rabble alliance has had any effect ? As an armchair psychologist, might it have somehow triggered a sense of nostalgia ?

Anyway, maybe Plan Corbyn is paying off. After the omnishambles of the likes of JRM blustering, he did seem quite statesmanlike. Hard to point at that and make it into a swivel eyed loon.

catching glimpse of the Express, I found myself wondering if it's quite as relevant today as .... say 5 years ago ? At some point, the readership of newspapers will slowly decline to a rump, and I wonder if that will be a voting rump.

lonelyplanetmum · 04/09/2019 09:28

Was it in Soap that they had the line 'confused? you will be'?

Soap was so funny..."This is the story of two sisters. Jessica Tate and Mary Campbell. These are the Tates, and these are the Campbells...and this is Soap." If only the current situation could be resolved by the butler Benson with his wit and insight.

DGRossetti · 04/09/2019 09:28

Incidentally, the BBC has resumed it's shitness. One a day like today, why is there a story about LEGO and Brexit on the front page FFS ?!?!?!?!

RedToothBrush · 04/09/2019 09:28

I agree, those supporting fascism must have a darkness in them to do so.

Too simplistic.

Too naive, trusting, hopeful, sheltered, unaware, politically disinterested, taught tribalism etc all come into it.

Selfish is a divisive word which misses some of the point and problems others have IMHO.

It's an easy word to throw about, which means you don't have to consider views from another view and mindset and set of priorities. Nor does it consider the role of propaganda.

Sorry but as much as think there are some elements of that it's a lazy way to approach and judge the motivations of how others vote.
