Westminstenders: Drain The Swamp

Johnson lost his first vote by 27.

The Commons take control again, and Johnson is now, with his majority gone, is seeking an election.

Whilst the feeling might be one of victory there is a definite sting in the tail.

Johnson has purged the party of 'trouble makers', meaning any replacements after an election are hard liners. And they will be in safe seats. Possibly many of which will be careerists parachuted in.

The party has split. The civil war is over.

Parliament has just lost some of its very best minds in the process. That bodes ill for us all in the long term. The polarisation has just jacked up a level. The centre has fallen even more.

There are no more moderates.

Polling suggests that Johnson won't be blamed for any of this and that's significant.

Take note of this tweet

Douglas Carswell @Douglascarswell
Boris Vs the political Parasites. Guess who wins across suburban Britain?

The optics are not about what you or I are seeing. Nor about what any of the politicial pundits are seeing.

The Democrats and the Media failed to see Trump coming... And this is what now concerns me. His optics are not bad with his core and targets.

Will Johnson be able to have his election?

If yes, I fear the polls look good for Johnson. People want 'Brexit over with' and don't want another extension. They may or may not understand the ramifications of that.

If no, then what? Johnson can do anything with his numbers. Does that mean potentially two governments and the Queen stuck in the middle? Or does he limp on, with no intention of doing anything but take us over the cliff by counting down the clock?

Or something else?

The Brexit Party and Conservatives now seem to have formally united one way or another. They have aligned with current politics alike the divided Opposition parties.

Tonight the penny might have dropped with a few Labour MPs too. They want May's deal to return. Its the only deal there is, in the absence of a Johnson plan and a Labour / Opposition plan. Too little too late...

This isn't going away as an issue either. Stoking up anger against the rebel alliance is a long term project for the fascist right.

Is tonight’s result a victory? Yes, but my fear is its potential to be a Pyrrhic Victory.

The battle today may have been won, but Johnson still looks set to win...

Stupid fat finger typing on noes there, but red beat me with the real figures

boatyardblues · 04/09/2019 19:22

What amendment was that?

LonelyTiredandLow · 04/09/2019 19:24

Apileof yes, but the Tories have been doing that since the WA was rejected. My leaver friend kept saying Parliament was "frustrating the will of the people".

It's just how long it goes on for that cements that in public minds. Also it works for both sides to some extent Sad

“The first amendment to be voted on is amendment 19.

The amendment - proposed by Conservative Richard Graham - would remove the need for Parliament to approve a no deal and insert a requirement for the PM to seek an extension for a deal, whether that is a new agreement or Theresa May’s deal.”

That was the 7pm ish vote Smile

SansaSnark · 04/09/2019 19:28

What's happened in parliament right now? Seems like there's some confusion?

SingingBabooshkaBadly · 04/09/2019 19:29

I’m very confused about what’s just happened...

RedToothBrush · 04/09/2019 19:30

The next vote is the Kinnock May's Deal Zombie Amendment, which I'd personally like to pass but I don't fancy it's chances.

UtterlyPerfectCartoonGiraffe · 04/09/2019 19:30

So they’ve voted against removing parliament’s right to approve no deal. Which means that parliament still (at this moment in time) can vote against no deal. So we’re, what, May 2019 ish on the ever repeating concentric timeline of shite.

dontcallmelen · 04/09/2019 19:31

Channel four news has had some very good interviews tonight, Guake was blistering on his view of Blowjob/Cummings/ also a Euro Mep didn’t catch his name, said the so called negotiating is all bullshit & the conservatives are just as bad as Farage BXP, must admit was a bit agog at hearing such straightforward talk.

BigChocFrenzy · 04/09/2019 19:31

For those still believing BJ's lies on Ireland:

https://www.independent.ie/business/brexit/boris-johnson-has-put-forward-no-proposals-to-replace-backstop-simon-coveney-tells-private-meeting-38465450.html

Tánaiste Simon Coveney has told a private meeting that the UK has put forward no proposals “at all” to replace the backstop since Boris Johnson took over as prime minister,
Independent.ie can reveal.

Speaking to a ‘business breakfast’ in Wicklow, where there were no media present, Mr Coveney gave his most frank assessment of the Brexit scenario so far.
...
An audience of around 200 people were told:
“Not only do we not have a credible and legally sound proposal to the backstop coming from Boris Johnson,
the EU has seen no proposal at all in fact.”

There was a vote earlier to stop no deal. The current votes are amendments to that.

Don't worry about the last vote. It wasn't expected to do anything and isn't important.

This amendment is OK. I'd like it to pass. It won't.

Waves @Piggywaspushed - you must be close to me then. I’m in Bedford. Which is an interesting place politically. Tory/Labour marginal with a LibDem mayor who survived the 2015 LibDem annihilation (mayoral election and 2015 GE coincided).

Ruth and Mark are equally confused it would seem.

TokyoSushi · 04/09/2019 19:35

A they said on Sky that because there were no tellers, the Kinnock amendment did pass, let's see...

prettybird · 04/09/2019 19:35

That's the point I'm making BigChoc - Scotland doesn't make a difference in stable governments.

I wouldn't make the claim that the current government is stable Wink

....and despite only 1 Scottish Conservative MP in 2015, Cameron did win a majority having hoped that the LibDems would protect him from having to hold the EU Referendum

So if Labour think they "need" the Scottish MPs to get back in power, then they are assuming that they will never win back middle England. There are after all only 59 MPs in Scotland (a figure due to reduce to 53 if the Boundary Commission review ever gets implemented) Confused

Yet BlowJobCum thinks he can and very possibly will Sad if he times it right Hmm win an overall majority, even factoring in and not caring about a wipeout in Scotland.

The WM FPTP system is no longer fit for purpose. Sad And to give the SNP its due, even though it would reduce the number of its MPs, it still advocates a PR system. (Not that its MPs want to be there at all Wink)

OhLookHeKickedTheBall · 04/09/2019 19:35

I'm watching and am completely confused as to what happened there!

BigChocFrenzy · 04/09/2019 19:35

Govt now only has 298 MPs, by my count

  • and a few of those may be doubtful in some votes
TokyoSushi · 04/09/2019 19:36

From Laura K

It looks like the Kinnock amendment to put Theresa May's deal back to the Commons for another vote just went through by mistake.... things are getting very very odd around here indeed
