Johnson lost his first vote by 27.

The Commons take control again, and Johnson is now, with his majority gone, is seeking an election.

Whilst the feeling might be one of victory there is a definite sting in the tail.

Johnson has purged the party of 'trouble makers', meaning any replacements after an election are hard liners. And they will be in safe seats. Possibly many of which will be careerists parachuted in.

The party has split. The civil war is over.

Parliament has just lost some of its very best minds in the process. That bodes ill for us all in the long term. The polarisation has just jacked up a level. The centre has fallen even more.

There are no more moderates.

Polling suggests that Johnson won't be blamed for any of this and that's significant.

Take note of this tweet

Douglas Carswell @Douglascarswell
Boris Vs the political Parasites. Guess who wins across suburban Britain?

The optics are not about what you or I are seeing. Nor about what any of the politicial pundits are seeing.

The Democrats and the Media failed to see Trump coming... And this is what now concerns me. His optics are not bad with his core and targets.

Will Johnson be able to have his election?

If yes, I fear the polls look good for Johnson. People want 'Brexit over with' and don't want another extension. They may or may not understand the ramifications of that.

If no, then what? Johnson can do anything with his numbers. Does that mean potentially two governments and the Queen stuck in the middle? Or does he limp on, with no intention of doing anything but take us over the cliff by counting down the clock?

Or something else?

The Brexit Party and Conservatives now seem to have formally united one way or another. They have aligned with current politics alike the divided Opposition parties.

Tonight the penny might have dropped with a few Labour MPs too. They want May's deal to return. Its the only deal there is, in the absence of a Johnson plan and a Labour / Opposition plan. Too little too late...

This isn't going away as an issue either. Stoking up anger against the rebel alliance is a long term project for the fascist right.

Is tonight’s result a victory? Yes, but my fear is its potential to be a Pyrrhic Victory.

The battle today may have been won, but Johnson still looks set to win...

There are no negotiations

It's all a con by BJ & Cummings

People sitting in a room - because refusing to meet a British minister would be seen as provocation - is NOT negotiations

[Irish] Government to discuss location of no-deal customs checks for cross-Border trade

https://www.irishtimes.com/business/economy/government-to-discuss-location-of-no-deal-customs-checks-for-cross-border-trade-1.4007674?mode=sample&auth-failed=1&pw-origin=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.irishtimes.com%2Fbusiness%2Feconomy%2Fgovernment-to-discuss-location-of-no-deal-customs-checks-for-cross-border-trade-1.4007674

The [Irish] Government will enter negotiations directly with the European Commissionn^ about where to situate customs checks for cross-Border trade in the event of a no-deal Brexit,
the Tánaiste told a business event on Wednesday.

“We are not going to allow Ireland to be dragged out of the single market by default as a result of Brexit.

That means, in a no-deal Brexit scenario scenario, finding a way to get an agreement with the European Commission to protect the integrity of the shared single market.”

Some Lexiters like howabout blithely talk of voting once for "only 5 years of Tory govt" .......

Once they get in and take control of the institutions

  • remember these Tories don't hold to normal constraints -
and change voting rules, gerrymander seat boundaries, stop trade union donations, let hard right billionaires buy up opposition media etc ....

it could be decades before a Labour govt

RedToothBrush · 04/09/2019 18:29

Kate McCann @kateemccann
Daniel kawczynski v angry after 1922 meeting. Said he’d asked for (and been given) a promise by Boris Johnson that the whip will not be returned to MPs who voted against the government. He was rounded on in the room and said most Con MPs think the opposite.

Understand that selection for new Conservative candidates is already taking place, so it looks unlikely those who had the whip removed will get it back.

I don't think there would be much objection to an All UK food standards backstop which would neatly sidestep border in the Irish Sea.

I don't think you understand the ERG who are now so fanatical that they don't want any compromises at all.

Five years is enough time for Scotland to leave the UK. How do the maths of the Commons look without Scotland?

RedToothBrush · 04/09/2019 18:32

Sebastian Payne@SebastianePayne
Boris Johnson came under sustained attack in the 1922 committee this evening for withdrawing the whip from the 21 anti no deal rebels.

The prime minister blamed it on the chief whip, saying it would be wrong to undermine him. "It was completely pathetic," said one MP.

Johnson was also questioned about the role of Dominic Cummings in the sacking of the 21 rebels. The PM responded that Cummings shouldn't be blamed as it was him in a "latex mask".

BCF the problem for the Remain Alliance is NOT the Lexiters.

YouGov
"“At the end of the day it’s No Deal or Corbyn”, wrote Daniel Finkelstein today. When we put that choice to the public they said they prefer No Deal by 48% to 35%"

The 48% who prefer No Deal to Corbyn includes 23% of Remain voters, 10% of Labour voters and 18% of LibDem voters. (10% of Leave voters would sacrifice Leave to get Corbyn).

Just for the record this is all academic to me. I live in an extremely safe SNP seat. Irony is that up till 2010 I had a Labour MP who was anti-Indy and Eurosceptic and economically / socially Corbynite. Labour in Scotland is so divided atm that they are completely unelectable. I didn't used to be politically homeless.

Basilpots · 04/09/2019 18:34

Wouldn’t a UK food backstop make negotiating a trade deal with US difficult?

MockersthefeMANist · 04/09/2019 18:34

Alastair Burt speaking very emotionally but with great dignity on my local news now. Good for him. He was my MP. I now have Mad Nad.

BigChocFrenzy · 04/09/2019 18:35

We can only go by what the irish govt are saying and doing, which is dicsussing Cusoms posts with the EU Commission.

Also, farming / agriculure are only one sector of the goods traffic cross the border

The EU still can't leave a hole in the external border
and it is the principle of a goods border that angers Ireland and Republicans / Nationalists - and will attract opposition in the US Congress - not just how many sectors would be bound by it

RedToothBrush · 04/09/2019 18:38

Tom Newton Dunn @tnewtondunn
In reply to backbenchers demanding the whip is restored to the 21, I’m told Boris repeatedly said he “can’t undermine the chief”. Tory MPs say it was the PM who instructed the Chief Whip to do it.

OP posts:
TokyoSushi · 04/09/2019 18:39

Some wondering if 'the Chief' is actually Cummings...

MockersthefeMANist · 04/09/2019 18:41

...and when the new candidates turn out to be UKIP retreads do the scales start to fall from some eyes.

LonelyTiredandLow · 04/09/2019 18:42

UK food standards backstop - would this stay completely in line with EU? If not, as Basil points out, not only would we loose US trade but also EU.

I don't think there would be much objection to an All UK food standards backstop which would neatly sidestep border in the Irish Sea. As Peregrina said, not a chance. You couldn't have your chlorinated chicken then.

BigChocFrenzy · 04/09/2019 18:42

howabout I am not talking - or even much interested in - the "Remain Alliance"

it is about avoiding No Deal, so maybe the "No Deal Alliance" - which includes Corbyn

I don't even say that Tory-voting Lexiters are the main problem,
just one of the most despicable groups,
the most lacking in ethics
since they would sacrifice the most vulnerable and risk the welfare state & the NHS to get Brexit

I expect such ruthlessness & callousness from the hard right & fascists
Other than USSR-supporting communists, I haven't seen it in the left before

Some people might not realise that the Scottish Parliament is not protected by statute (that was one of the things that was promised but not delivered during/after the Indyref campaign Angry).

So a hostile WM Government could choose simply to abolish it Hmm many of its supposedly devolved powers have already been taken back in one of the Brexit bills Hmm (Agreement is assumed even if the Scottish Parliament says No Confused)

As I posted earlier, the Conservatives won a majority (which led to this blasted referendum) in 2015 with only a single Conservative MP in Scotland (which is all it had had for a number of elections Hmm - and was an improvement on previous elections Shock) and 56 SNP MPs. So even if all of those SNP MPs had been Labour, Labour still wouldn't have had a majority Confused

So even if the SNP win 50+ MPs in the next GE (even if they won 59 MPs Shock), they may well still be powerless against a Conservative majority Sad

I still think a GE too soon without safeguards is dangerous Sad
