Brexit

Do Remainers wish their MPs had voted for Theresa Mays deal in light of the current chaos?

I didn't vote as I'm so much on the fence my bum is sore.

I did decide I would go along with whatever was voted on and was surprised it was Leave.

More than happy with a Norway type deal, or a very soft Brexit if that was offered, equally happy to stay in. Not so happy about No Deal and am watching the whole bun fight with amazement.

I am honestly staggered at all the arguing and fighting that's going on but I just can't get excited like others seem to, let alone fight for one side or the other.

I am curious though at whether you experts think the MPs who voted against Theresa Mays deal are now regretting this as it seemed a reasonable compromise? At the time I think the Leavers voted no because of the close ties with the EU, and the Remainers voted no because they were determined Brexit could be defeated this way. Or have I got this all wrong?

What is happening now is 100% worse than TMs deal.

I lobbied for it to avoid the shit we have now.

Oakenbeach · 02/09/2019 16:48

In a word, yes.

timshelthechoice · 02/09/2019 16:56

No, I don't wish they'd voted for her deal.

twofingerstoEverything · 02/09/2019 17:03

My MP did vote for TM's WA.
I think what we're seeing at the moment is a load of posturing to get MPs/the public to accept something very, very similar to TM's WA now that the horrors of no-deal are starting to be talked about.
Like:
We've got mince for dinner.
I don't like mince...
Fine, we'll have boiled sheep's head instead.
OK, let's have mince...

TheNumberfaker · 02/09/2019 17:28

Nope. My MP did vote for her Deal but is now so far up Johnson’s backside he’d need a torch and pick axe to get out. I don’t like this prolonged uncertainty and anxiety but I think we need to face up to the truth that there is no deal at all that could be better than our current deal as full members. The public needs to see that no-one could achieve the cake and eat it sunlit uplands that Leave promised in 2016. No one, be they May or a true leaver like Johnson could. MPs have shown that they need to be staring over the cliff face to make the difficult decision to change course. It’s tough now but it will be even worse rse no matter what the deal and catastrophically worse with no-deal.

I think a lot of remainers did hope that there woukd be no brexit. I am a staunch remainer but realised that leave won the referendum and i was just praying they would negotiate something workable but not as good as what we had. I actually think peoples disbelief has stopped sensible negotiations and preparations for leaving. I agree that this is a lot of posturing to get MPs to accept basically the deal they had before with minir tweaks. The only way for this deal to go through would be if the leave campaign present it as their deal as otherwise it will be seen as a remainers cop out.

GoodJobSteve · 02/09/2019 17:49

To be fair, the 'Remain' side didn't (don't?) have an issue with the WA part, just the Political Declaration part. If Theresa May had tightened up the PD to be 'Norway+' I think we'd be done and dusted by now (but that would have meant giving up her precious 'end of free movement' red line).

I'm just utterly confused about all the twists and turns. I've no idea why a GE would work to achieve BJs agenda? Surely he would be voted out?

I lobbied hard for my ERG MP to vote for the WA. He did finally on the 3rd vote.

twofingerstoEverything · 02/09/2019 18:53

What? With Corbyn as Leader of the Labour Party? And the Tories going full Brexit party?

lljkk · 02/09/2019 19:06

I wanted my MP to vote for the existing WA. Every time.
As Ken Clarke says, it's relatively "harmless."

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 02/09/2019 19:32

My MP (that I didn’t vote for) voted for the deal

I voted remain but would have been ok with a soft brexit

NoBaggyPants · 02/09/2019 19:39

My MP voted remain but then voted for the WA and is now in favour of no deal. What an utter crock of shit.

I think an election would only confirm how much the country is split. We've got Labour, the SNP and the Greens on one side, the Tories and the Brexit Party on the other, and the LibDems and the DUP hovering in the middle to see who will offer them the best goodies to side with them. How that will fall in terms of a majority/ coalition I have no idea.

NeverSayFreelance · 02/09/2019 19:51

Yes, mostly. It was a poor deal, but it was a deal.

gottagetbetter7 · 02/09/2019 20:18

I wrote to my MP before 1st and 3rd votes asking him to support the WA but he is a complete (Labour MP) remainer. I am also a remainer but unlike him I do believe in democracy and honouring the ref result (although he did support the triggering of article 50 but chooses to forget that fact). He is on a slim majority and think he has a good chance of losing his seat, especially if people like myself (Labour supporter of 30 years up until 6 months ago) will not vote for him again.

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 02/09/2019 21:25

It was a poor deal, but it was a deal

But it wasn’t really - it was just an agreement that said very little about an actual future trade deal.

And not so much mince rather than sheep’s head, rather bag of offal that may or may not be infected with BSE, vs. handful of cold poison.

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 02/09/2019 21:32

Why? If this advisory referendum had been a binding referendum it would have been annulled on account of the breaking of electoral law. I don’t think this is democratic at all.

yellowallpaper · 02/09/2019 21:48

TMs deal did look better than what we have facing us by a long way. I am angry with the EU for their insistence on a backstop that is unilateral. Frankly I'm sick of all the games on all sides. I expected Remain to win the referendum, I wish they had because even a less than perfect organisation is better than this chaos Sad

OP posts:
bellinisurge · 02/09/2019 22:05

The backstop is there to save peace in NI and to cater to TM's red lines because she didn't have the guts to face down DUP/ERG and insist on an NI only backstop.
It isn't some wicked fancy created by the EU to piss us off.
Continued peace and prosperity in NI is a price worth paying.

Jason118 · 02/09/2019 22:10

No deal is a stinking pile of poo. The WA is a pile of poo. I don't like poo.

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 02/09/2019 22:10

I am angry with the EU for their insistence on a backstop that is unilateral

What on earth do you mean by this?

Peregrina · 02/09/2019 22:32

and the LibDems and the DUP hovering in the middle to see who will offer them the best goodies to side with them.

The LibDems aren't hovering anywhere - they are a Remain party. DUP - who knows? Sometimes they are British but when it suits, not, and sometimes when it suits they almost admit to being Irish.

timshelthechoice · 02/09/2019 22:38

I am angry with the EU for their insistence on a backstop that is unilateral

I'm angry with them for not telling this thick arse island who voted for economic and financial suicide just to fuck off and once and for all and let them go to the wall.

Symptomless · 02/09/2019 22:40

I'm still not sure, on the other hand it wasn't an amazing deal but on the other hand we would be moving on to other negotiations now.

Notonthestairs · 02/09/2019 22:46

I wrote to my MP to ask her to vote for it.

She's a member of the ERG and an MP in a predominantly Remainer area (62.7%).

No response.
