Brexit

Do we genuinely need to stockpile?

In light of this morning’s news, I have started to wonder if we genuinely do need to stock up in the event of a no deal Brexit? None of us (touch wood) require any ongoing medication, though 9mo DD has a sensitive tummy when it comes to milk and tolerates HiPP best. I’ve a feeling cows’ milk won’t go down well when she’s 12mo, and was planning to try almond milk or similar as a back up.

Should we be stocking up on HiPP/milk alternatives/Calpol etc?

Luckily we’re just switching to reusable nappies and wipes, so that’s one less thing to think of I guess.

my husband is the king of chutney so we have an outhouse full of jars already. Excellent, thanks, running out of cupboard/freezer space (also slightly worried about power cuts and drawers of soggy food buts lets not even go there 😱)

Peregrina · 30/08/2019 10:47

Leavers surely don't need to stockpile because it will all be fiiine? Grin

I refer you to this definition Grin:

REVELLING: keeping, for unapproved reasons such as Brexit, a STOCKPILE (see above), however keeping a STOCKPILE (see above) for approved reasons such as “just because” is FIIIIIINNNEE especially if you use a euphemism like “Why, I always keep months of food in my shed, isn’t that normal?”. (See also: MASSIVE HYPOCRITE).

Of course we should if we can afford. We have been warned enough. I have a good supply of basics. 2 mins googling tells you why. I have onlu bought what I use anyway.

Graphista · 30/08/2019 15:48

Socksontheradiator - thanks, that's not the full list.

Sansasnark excellent post, I'm shocked people are STILL so clueless as to how our supply chains and farms work (or rather don't in event of brexit)

S1naidSucks · 30/08/2019 15:58

bellinisurge That’s a dehydrator added to my list. Thank you.

and i NEARLY said ‘whats wrong with avocados ‘ 😳 caught myself just in time well saved, well saved. nods head

Can you dehydrate avocados?

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 30/08/2019 16:06

I don’t think they would be the same

I had avocado on toast with cumin salt chia and pumpkin seeds a few nights ago...lush

bellinisurge · 30/08/2019 16:15

"Can you dehydrate avocados ?"
According to all my various books, the answer is No because they are too oily and will go rancid too quickly.

wheresmymojo · 30/08/2019 16:39

I'm not stockpiling - my take is that it will mainly impact fresh fruit and veg.

I'm not stockpiling because neither of us have any allergies or dietary requirements and are both healthy adults. I'm expecting that we will have to be more flexible about what we eat and that our usual choices of fresh food won't always be available.

However I don't expect their to be food shortages, just more limited choice if that makes sense.

I might take a different view to stockpiling if either of us were vulnerable/had dietary requirements/etc.

I am stockpiling some cat food though just to be on the safe side as they don't have the option of being more flexible and eating turnips or whatever Grin

Oh that sounds lovely. weeps over the potential shortages of avocado. Btw, frozen avocado are rank.

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 30/08/2019 18:28

I did buy a pack of frozen avocado but i was too afraid to open them

LittleSweet · 30/08/2019 18:33

I think a food dehydrator is a really good idea. Dh has put his foot down in the sudden role of a 1950s husband, and told me that we don't need one. We'll see...

Socksontheradiator · 30/08/2019 18:41

LittleSweet tell him it'll save wastage.
I just bought a bag of chopped frozen veg to practise with.
Need to sterilise some jars first. Ridiculously excited Grin

GrimalkinsCrone · 30/08/2019 19:01

Rufus that’s my sort of stockpiling. I lived on potatoes, pasta and pulses for years as a student, but I have no reason not to fill my stash with tasty food. I don’t understand why the anti-prepping lot assume I’ll be gobbling baked beans from a can by the light of a single candle.
Prepping with a touch of decadence is more my style!

ListeningQuietly · 30/08/2019 19:11

My freezer has lots of frozen herbs so that I can eat really tasty sauces with my tinned veg and pulses ....
The art of a stockpile larder cupboard is to have a selection of yummy recipes available even if outside its
snowing / flooded / the zombie apocalypse / Brexit

Just catching up on this thread - thanks for the reminders about contact lenses and also bread sticks! Staple items...!

Of course, why slum it! I’m stockpiling gin (and tonic, obviously) and MASSIVE bars of chocolate. I’m trying to stockpile Pringles as well, but DH has found them Sad

Lidl and Aldi both do a really nice dark chocolate at a ridiculous price. It’s only about 50 % but very good. 10 large bars for about £3.50 Smile

Ohflippineck · 30/08/2019 20:39

And halva is gorgeous and quite good for you too, about 25p a bar in Home Bargains (other retailers are available). Keeps forever.

ceilingdrum · 30/08/2019 21:20

My sons seizures are controlled through medication I spent the whole day yesterday on phone to pharmacy and gp trying to track down a manufacturer that has these meds
It was stressful but it's made me realise I need to stockpile
No medication means seizures means regression means my poor boy.

GrimalkinsCrone · 30/08/2019 21:26

Yes, my being flippant doesn’t change the potentially serious consequences.
My uncle died recently, I was given a large bag of his meds to dispose of. Two of his meds are the same drug at the same strength that I take, so I now have 3 months extra supplies of an essential medication that may be hard to obtain. Or not. Who knows? I’d rather not die finding out.

amandacarnet · 30/08/2019 21:30

America has worse food regulations than the EU. I really don't want to have to eat food from there.

S1naidSucks · 30/08/2019 21:42

I know my medical need isn’t as serious as others, but I’m on one of the HRT meds that’s currently short and need to see my doctor before my new script. I’m concerned that they’re going to take the opportunity to get me off the HRT as I’ve been on it since I was 37. Unfortunately my mental health and mood is badly affected.

My youngest is on meds, so I’m really worried about her. ☹️
