Brexit

Do we genuinely need to stockpile?

In light of this morning’s news, I have started to wonder if we genuinely do need to stock up in the event of a no deal Brexit? None of us (touch wood) require any ongoing medication, though 9mo DD has a sensitive tummy when it comes to milk and tolerates HiPP best. I’ve a feeling cows’ milk won’t go down well when she’s 12mo, and was planning to try almond milk or similar as a back up.

Should we be stocking up on HiPP/milk alternatives/Calpol etc?

Luckily we’re just switching to reusable nappies and wipes, so that’s one less thing to think of I guess.

Think of a stockpile as a pantry or insurance policy in case of shortages and price hikes. Having extra in since the beginning of the year has seen us through bad weather, illness and lack of money. I'm converted into having a stash at all times now.

Medical supply companies, big pharma, airplane companies, schools, social care providers, chemical users UK govt. is telling them all to stockpile. Why shouldn't individuals stockpile when official govt advice is many groups should stockpile?

32 documents here for ordinary people, to advise them what they need to do to prepare for Brexit. Anyone want to trawl thru that & find the stock piling advice.

Dontgiveamonkeys1350 · 29/08/2019 07:08

I have a pile. And it’s getting bigger everyday. If I don’t need it ... fine I will eat it anyway. If I do need it fine... it will get eaten. Not sure where the downside is to this. My family will be fed. Not sure I’m willing to put them in harms way in October. Just because some people think stock piling is an idiotic idea.

joystir59 · 29/08/2019 07:12

We are a fat nation so we don't need to stock pile.

MaudBaileysGreenTurban · 29/08/2019 07:16

Feel free not to joystir.

I for one no longer care if cliché-spouting BrexitBots go hungry.

BeanBag7 · 29/08/2019 07:18

@joystir59 is right, everyone knows fat people dont need to eat 🙄 and fat kids dont need formula or medication.

Or are you suggesting we can all just eat or fat neighbours?

RebeccaRae · 29/08/2019 07:20

Stockpiling now won't contribute to future shortages. 30 million people waking up on 1 November to Brexit chaos and then deciding to panic buy tins because fresh veg is scarce will cause shortages. And when that happens, it'll be a good thing that the stockpilers are out of the equation.

I've decided to stockpile, OP. I'm not going crazy with it, just picking up a few extra tins and large bags of pasta and rice when shopping anyway. It's unrealistic to expect to be able to stockpile for the duration the crisis is going to last, so I'm just hoping to ease the burden rather than avoid it.

It's also worth considering that inflation will get quite high, so if it's possible I would adjust your spending to be as frugal as you can and give yourself a bit of a cushion.

"We are a fat nation so we don't need to stock pile."

Man cannot live by gammon alone.

joystir59 · 29/08/2019 08:18

I'm not fat so I'm stock piling. What we need to do is get the far right out and Labour in.

joystir59 · 29/08/2019 08:21

If the supermarkets stocked food instead of aisles and aisles of plastic packed palm.oil enriched heart attack inducing crap.. and we bought real food grown locally. Perhaps if we got off our flabby arses and grew some food, or got off our arses as a nation and actually DID ANYTHING other than apathetic selfish whining we might not be in this mess!!!

joystir59 · 29/08/2019 08:24

And I mean flabby in a mental as well as physical sense. And I'm typing sitting in Asda cafe having just ordered and wasted the most utterly disgusting excuse for scrambled eggs since the war years. A harbinger? I'm working away from home in my defence and there are no real cafes here.

NovemberWitch · 29/08/2019 08:26

So you agree that prepping and growing your own is a great idea?
Because that is actively doing something about a perceived future problem before it becomes a crisis. Protesting is one aspect but like prayersandthoughtsthoughtsandprayers, it’s only useful if backed up with positive action.

bellinisurge · 29/08/2019 08:30

@joystir59 , I grow my own AND prep AND hate Brexit. Will you give me a prize?
Just so we are clear, everyone deserves decent affordable food. That's how you stay healthy and well. You don't get that with shortages. My impressive personal reserves of fat are not stores of decent nutrition. I wish!

NoWordForFluffy · 29/08/2019 08:32

@bellinisurge, me too! Can I share that prize?!

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 29/08/2019 08:32

I’ve been stockpiling meds for a while, l order them every month bang on the date of the last request. And live got about 2-3 months hoarded

NoWordForFluffy · 29/08/2019 08:33

Oh, I'm also slim, so I don't fancy an enforced diet.

SistemaAddict · 29/08/2019 09:03

HOUSE!

Spanneroo · 29/08/2019 09:05

Does anyone know the impact to things like winter fuel? I'm expecting twins in late November/early December and will need to keep them warm. We don't have a fireplace.

bellinisurge · 29/08/2019 09:16

@Spanneroo , most likely impact on fuel is that there may be general price rises. I assume you are on a specific tariff rather than a variable tariff. So you should be ok. Tweak that now if you are on a variable rate.
In what I hope is the unlikely event you face difficulties, I am confident you will be prioritised for help by your utility provider as you will have two wee vulnerable babies.
Congratulations on your pregnancy, btw!

BlackeyedGruesome · 29/08/2019 09:20

There are lots of threads about keeping warm in winter on Mumsnet. They have some great advice.

Orangecake123 · 29/08/2019 09:28

I would rather have a few extra items now just in case, rather than just be sat wishing I had done something earlier on.

cranstonmanor · 29/08/2019 09:40

I have started to wonder if we genuinely do need to stock up

The bible teaches to stock up in the "fat years" so you have enough to eat in the lean years. Now I'm not particularly religious but if those guys survived and went forth and procreated rather successfully with a stockpile a few thousand years ago it might be a good idea to always have a stockpile.

joystir59 · 29/08/2019 09:44

Prices = availability if you are poor

bellinisurge · 29/08/2019 09:44

Obviously @joystir59

joystir59 · 29/08/2019 09:49

I hate Brexit and I hate the direction our country is going in politically, and I do believe there is no better time than now for each of us to be kind, be active in our communities, find solutions, and take whatever steps each of us is able to take to fight against the pernicious drip feed of right wing racist and xenophobic and victim blaming rhetoric. I was being tongue in cheek in some of my previous comments. I was a fat person and experienced plenty of fatist stuff.
