Will Brexit stash be safe?

DH is talking about starting a Brexit stash. But in the event that the shops are so empty that we resort to eating tinned potatoes and beans, do we really think the people with no stash will just go “Oh well, guess me and my kids will starve”. Surely they’ll just come round with baseball bats and take your stash? And you won’t be able to go out because you’ll have to stay at home to protect your family and your stash!

No, I’m genuinely wondering if it’s even worth stashing stuff. It seems a bit pointless - either we won’t need it, or we will but someone bigger and tougher will come along and take it.

Well, in a real apocalypse situation you'd have cause to worry. It's worth having a bit stashed away so you can avoid the shops for a while, if supply disruption causes low stocks on shelves and unprepared people panic buying.
Preppers are seen as selfish but done appropriately is actually helpful all round.

You need to barricade yourselves in with the tins. Also, get some cauldrons of boiling oil on the roof for frying chips, excellent for tipping onto intruders and can be made to look like an accident if law and order is ever re-established

I mean, I'm a hardcore doomsayer remainer and even I'm not expecting the apocalypse. If the neighbours came round and didn't have any food, I'd probably cook them tea, y'know?

Ok prepper here, this is a commonly talked about issue and there are several thinks to do.

1 never tell anyone about your stash.

2 store food that doesn’t smell or can be eaten cold if nessasary. In case cooking attracts unwanted attention.

3 hide your rubbish, people will find it and come looking

4 blend in. If all your neighbors line up outside a shop to get whatever just arrived, line up as well. It will be noticeable if you just walk on past.

There is no point. Come the apocalypse they will come and steal it all from you.

I’m not advertising my stash, for the simple reason I know that if there are price rises or shortages, I’ll have friends and relatives asking for it, “because you’ve got loads” or want to buy it at the price I bought it for, even if the prices have risen. Think that wouldn’t happen? Look how many entitled people turn up for days or weeks at end to Mumsnetter’s homes, expecting to be fed and watered, without putting their hand in their own pocket.

I made the mistake of telling a young couple I think very highly of, that they could take a couple of bags worth of food out of my walk-in larder, as I knew they would appreciate the help. They took all 12 tins of sweetcorn! They would have seen that there was only 12, but that don’t stop them. They’re truly lovely people, so I’ve no idea what they were thinking, other than ‘SS’ can afford it. I could afford it, but it meant I had to go out to the supermarket to get more as my youngest is obsessed with the bloody stuff. 😁 If that’s what a lovely couple does, then can you imagine what entitled friends, neighbours or relatives would do/expect of you?

You don’t have to prepare for the ‘apocalypse’, but you’ll feel a lot more secure if you have something to fall back on, in times of need, such as price rises, injury, ill health, etc. People can be jealous and judgemental of those who prep, but I don’t give a shiny, as it’ll all get eaten anyway.

Well we know what you're stashing allthegins.

It is worth getting stuff you actually eat and will use or can afford to give away to food bank.

Don't tell people about it so you avoid the cheeky fuckers and blabber mouths.

At a guess it is most likely to be supply issues as in delayed supplies at ports, less fresh food to start, probably more expensive as the new system gets established, patchy supply so sometimes you can get stuff and sometimes there are only the cereals your kids won't eat on the shelves.

If your kids will only eat say Shreddies and the shops only have branflakes you may have difficulties at home. Not so much if everyone eats all-sorts of food and is more adaptable.

If it gets to the point of raiding other people's houses then there are greater things to worry about.

How would anyone know unless you invite them all over and they go through your larder? I am topping up now with each shop and storing things like tins under the kickboards (mostly to stop my hungry family from eating it immediately!).

It's sad that we have to discuss and prepare for this as a future.

OP one thing to note, if you prepare for ANY type of disaster and it doesn’t happen. You have lost NOTHING.

At one time having tins and stuff in would have been seen as prudent housekeeping. You only need to be snowed in or laid low with the flu, to not be able to shop and rely on your store cupboard.

But - it wasn't what was promised.

Just avoid cooking currey, fish and chips or bbq and it will be fine.

More seriously: I wouldn't expect a no-deal Brexit to be a zombie apocalypse.

Most likely imo there will be shortages, people will run out of looroll, spend lots of time queuing, not be able to find the food they like and make do with stuff they don't like for a while. Worse for vulnerable people and those affected by medication shortages. But not enough to make anyone invade other people's houses on the offchance of finding a stash of Cushelle.
