To be terrified of no deal Brexit

Having just watched the headlines, it really does seem that Boris is hellbent on taking us out with no deal. The fact he’s thrown down the gauntlet to the EU stating that he won’t come to the table unless they drop the backstop - well of course they’re not going to do that, and Boris won’t back down, so we will be leaving with no deal.

What do you think will be the repercussions of this? I’m terrified I’m going to lose my job and my home. If I’m worried then I can’t imagine what people reliant on various meds are going through.

I think I might stop watching the news as it just makes me anxious.

"we are out ok oct 31, deal or (more likely) no deal"
You aren't out @Janista . Unless something happened to make Australia part of the UK that I didn't notice.

NoWordForFluffy · 01/08/2019 07:45

No deal Brexit = Tories finished
Remain in EU = Tories finished

Orderly Brexit (channelling my inner TM!) = potential for Tories to not be finished.

All this foot stamping going on re the backstop is ridiculous and make our PM look like a spoilt brat.

His talks with the EU will be interesting, I'm sure (I wonder if they'll look anything like the public image Johnson is giving though; I'm not convinced they will!).

Janista · 01/08/2019 07:45

Looks like a trade deal will be done within weeks of a no-deal Brexit:

@Tullow2016 , tbe WA does not make NI a special economic zone. Maybe you weren't paying attention.

Justaboutdone · 01/08/2019 07:46

Should say a People’s Vote

bellinisurge · 01/08/2019 07:46

And the US? @Janista

Tullow2016 · 01/08/2019 07:48

If you don’t like the chance of getting the wrong result, don’t give the people the vote

Now that would be a good argument

Poor argument as it effectively says that only government opinion counts as to what is right or wrong.

StoorieHoose · 01/08/2019 07:48

That trade deal sounds GREAT for the environment

Justaboutdone · 01/08/2019 07:49

Janista what’s the population of Australia?
How far is it from UK?

Whilst we need to trade with all countries and we have very close links with Australia- it’s at the other side of the fucking world!!!!!!!!! I would much rather a deal with the EU where goods can be delivered easily and relatively cheaply and with a much smaller carbon footprint

Tullow2016 · 01/08/2019 07:51

WA does not make NI a special economic zone. Maybe you weren't paying attention

It was getting there when it said NI will remain in CU and SM until permanent solution was found. The DUP and ERG extended it to cover the entire UK

Tullow2016 · 01/08/2019 07:53

UK already trades with the USA. It is UKs largest single export market in terms of an individual Country.

frumpety · 01/08/2019 07:54

Anymore news on the Governments No deal pamphlet ? Quite excited to hear what advice they will be giving to households. Anyone want to join me in offering potential bits of advice from the leaflet ? I can think of a few

  1. Ensure you fuel tank is full
  2. Do not plan any non essential foreign travel
  3. Stock up on water/candles/batteries/non perishable food items in the event of short term disruption to supplies.

Hope you have never driven a Japanese car in the UK

bellinisurge · 01/08/2019 08:01

@Tullow2016 , that Deal with tbe US is made via our membership of the EU. Haven't you realised it yet. All our current deals with third party countries are made via our membership of tbe EU. Some are happy to just roll that over, some, like the US, smell blood and will renegotiate when we are out. A deal that has to get through Congress. Which has, on both sides of the house, Irish Descent representatives. The so-called Irish vote is massive in the US. So pissing all over GFA and attempting to screw Ireland won't improve our chances of a good deal with US. For US, that is.

Tullow2016 · 01/08/2019 08:01

To Frumperty

If you can afford it and are prepared to gamble maybe change any spare Sterling you have into Euro. Sterling very likely to take a hit in the event of no deal brexit. So when you change back to Sterling you should have more than what you started with which will help to offset the prices rises in food that will also likely occur.

Good luck

bellinisurge · 01/08/2019 08:03

@frumpety , how about "Keep Calm and Carry On"😂😂😂😂😂😂😂At least people will get to understand it in real life rather than in a meme.

bellinisurge · 01/08/2019 08:05

@Tullow2016 , no it wasn't. Johnson has already talked about setting up freeports post Brexit. Make the whole of NI a Freeport.
And if you are telling me that an NI only backstop wouldn't get through Parliament (not an all UK one which is what WA said), I would be very surprised.

Janista · 01/08/2019 08:05

US is UKs single biggest market and we don't have a trade deal with them, we trade on WTO terms already just like we do with China, another huge market.

People getting hysterical about no deal - it's a load of hot air.

bellinisurge · 01/08/2019 08:10

What's with the We, @Janista . And every Deal we have becomes null and void at 11pm on 31 October unless we agree to roll over.

StoorieHoose · 01/08/2019 08:13

I thought we traded with the uS and China via the trade agreement from within the EU not WTO.

StoorieHoose · 01/08/2019 08:15

Well a Google tells me otherwise and it is via WTO. So why is Trump blaming the EU trade deal for not being able to successfully trade with the UK before now?

bellinisurge · 01/08/2019 08:15

Yup @StoorieHoose .

Peregrina · 01/08/2019 08:19

That was before the Eastern Europe increase in membership.

You do realise that Major was the one who pushed for the E European states to accede? No doubt in part motivated by the desire to pull them away from Russia but probably too soon.

Then Blair chose not to use the powers we had to curtail the number of E European immigrants.

Tullow2016 · 01/08/2019 08:24

that Deal with tbe US is made via our membership of the EU. Haven't you realised it yet. All our current deals with third party countries are made via our membership of tbe EU

USA and UK are also WTO members since 1995 as are most if the current EU members. If an EU member leaves the EU there is nothing to prevent them from continuing to trade under WTO rules with others that are also WTO members.

So pissing all over GFA and attempting to screw Ireland won't improve our chances of a good deal with US

How does UK operating under WTO rules contradict the GFA? I take note of your choice of words which were:

won't improve our chances of a good deal with US

as opposed to

will make a trade deal between UK and USA impossible

Rightly or wrongly it is money that talks in the business world.

MustardScreams · 01/08/2019 08:25

A load of hot air? Do you actually read the news @Janista?! The anount of money no deal is costing the UK could put the NHS back on its feet, support people in poverty, reduce homelessness drastically, reopen the Sure Start Centers, boost school’s funding so our children have a better start in life, fund social care so the people who need it most have support and care and so much more, close food banks because they will be a fallback rather than a necessity for so many.

Oh and we won’t have weeks of uncertainty, lack of medications, lack of food. Boris is putting aside 2.1 billion MORE money which includes a public awareness campaign about disruption. So if a twat Tory is preparing for a no deal that is going to harm the country, I have absolutely no idea where you get ‘hot air’ from with those 5 brain cells of yours.
