To be terrified of no deal Brexit

Having just watched the headlines, it really does seem that Boris is hellbent on taking us out with no deal. The fact he’s thrown down the gauntlet to the EU stating that he won’t come to the table unless they drop the backstop - well of course they’re not going to do that, and Boris won’t back down, so we will be leaving with no deal.

What do you think will be the repercussions of this? I’m terrified I’m going to lose my job and my home. If I’m worried then I can’t imagine what people reliant on various meds are going through.

I think I might stop watching the news as it just makes me anxious.

Aah come on!
I'm from a EU country. Stop being paranoid, EU doesn't want to destroy UK. As a matter of fact, they would have much preferred you staying.

Now eu is looking out for their own countries/interests, you shouldn't be surprised by that.

And to some of you, I don't think your current situation (and it must be horrible) is because of Russia, EU or whoever you would like to blame. You seem very divided, not very informed before your EU election and your politicians/politics seems to reflect that.

I feel sorry for you, but no we are not out to get you, you opted out of this 'play group', we didn't have a say. And frankly, atleast i am quite fed up of being vilified and you - because of domestic policies - have left the rest of us to dangle by being indecisive.

Fwiw i would be stockpiling for just in case... A lot.

Best of luck Smile.

InTheHeatofLisbon · 31/07/2019 14:32

prettybird word for word I'm with you.

I don't think anyone is angry about Scotland getting independence. Surprised, shocked, stunned that the government's continual belittling of a devolved nation has eventually led to that nation saying loudly "fuck that".

I mean, it's like it's a surprise that being treated like shit gets wearing after a while.

It's a surprise to nobody but a certain group of people (NOT English people as a whole, I'm very clear on that), who frankly don't really matter because very soon, Scotland won't be their concern.

InTheHeatofLisbon · 31/07/2019 14:34

bumblebeejockstrap please don't think it's everyone who believes that ridiculous narrative, because it really isn't.

I want Scottish independence so we can have a chance to rejoin the EU because we never wanted to leave!

bumblebeejockstrap · 31/07/2019 14:41

intheheatoflisbon i don't, I really don't Smile.

But a lot of us are soo fed up of you not taking responsibility, and blaming left, right and center. I'm in 'awe' of the megalomania and the paranoia. We really would like you to have stayed Smile.

For Scottish people... Oh you must feel betrayed, hope you eventually will be let in again.

InTheHeatofLisbon · 31/07/2019 14:51

But a lot of us are soo fed up of you not taking responsibility, and blaming left, right and center. I'm in 'awe' of the megalomania and the paranoia. We really would like you to have stayed

I completely agree, I hate that this ever happened.

For Scottish people... Oh you must feel betrayed, hope you eventually will be let in again.

It's literally our only hope, so I hope so too. The EU have been more than reasonable so far, and I've read leaders of several EU member states saying they wouldn't block an independent Scotland joining so hopefully our departure will be temporary.

More than anything I hate the rise of the far right, it never, ever ends well as history has shown over and over again. Hatred cannot lead to good things.

bumblebeejockstrap · 31/07/2019 15:07

The worse a population is feeling (poverty), the more it is divided, the more the far right rises. Agree it is very dangerous.

It is too late now, but considering you politics post the Brexit election. What would have been the easy way would have been for EU to deny you an exit. Sounds crazy (and they would of course never do) , but that way your politicians would have had their backs free and would still have been able to blame their inefficiency on EU, and you wouldn't be facing this. Quite think this would be a dream scenario for politicians Grin.

Cyberworrier · 31/07/2019 15:08

The destruction of the union is imminent... at the hands of Boris, May, Cameron et al. Way to go guys. There are indeed some tin foil hat wearers out in force on here. Good luck getting all those great things from Boris, whoever is so proud to have voted for him. Man of his word is Boris 🙄
The person is Australia reminds me of the puff chested little Englanders complaining about bloody immigrants whilst sat reading the daily mail in their retirement home in Spain.

InTheHeatofLisbon · 31/07/2019 15:11

The worse a population is feeling (poverty), the more it is divided, the more the far right rises.

The irony being, it's the current government and previous ones (Tories) who've caused the poverty!

What would have been the easy way would have been for EU to deny you an exit.

Would have suited some of the more prominent Brexiteers beautifully! I think people forget that the EU could have forced us to leave before now without a deal too, and that the extensions have been goodwill from the EU that certainly the politicians don't deserve but I'm heartened by the fact that at least one side is being decent!

TheElementsSong · 31/07/2019 15:14

Don't forget, the UK are simultaneously:

  • a mighty awesome buccaneering powerhouse (who are omniscient and omnipotent), boldly flinging aside the weak bindings of a crumbling decrepit behemoth, bestriding the globe as humbled lesser nations (who need us more than we need them) offer trade deals supplication and BMWs and prosecco adoration and follow our lead towards glorious isolation;
  • a helpless victim of nefarious bullying and punishment by an invincibly powerful and cunning superpredator, as we are now torn asunder by terrifying forces, the delicate exquisite petals of our already-devastated realm are already so depleted that any individual citizen even thinking pessimistically is sufficient to scorch us to shrivelled ashes.
StealthPolarBear · 31/07/2019 15:15

The arrogance and sheer stupidity of the people saying it will all be fine is breathtaking.

bellinisurge · 31/07/2019 15:15

Once again @TheElementsSong makes me laugh. Grin Thank you.

iwantadishwasher · 31/07/2019 15:23

US politicians now saying they will block a UK/US trade deal if the GFA is threatened.

No deal looking less likely by the day. Johnson is just full of waffle and bluster.

Coppersulphate · 31/07/2019 15:34

Bumblebee, I was very informed before the referendum that is why I voted leave.

The EU is definitely to blame.
We joined a Common Market not some large bureaucratic organisation with an anthem, President, flag and intent on ever closer political union. And I don't think we signed up to an EU army but they are getting one. We don't need EU diplomats or the ECJ either.
We need what we signed up for, a common trading area.

Alsohuman · 31/07/2019 15:47

@bumblebeejockstrap, most of us know this shitshow is entirely of the UK’s making. I imagine the EU must be heartily sick of us and will be delighted to see the back of us. I know I would be.

InTheHeatofLisbon · 31/07/2019 15:50

And I don't think we signed up to an EU army but they are getting one

It's an alliance, not an EU army. Ffs. What do you think NATO is????

Anyway, given that the British army is currently in absolutely no position to respond to a threat, having allies rather than alienating neighbours makes sense!

DP is ex army, his mates are still in. If you knew the realities of the cuts and lack of anything you'd be fucking horrified!

And the British national anthem isn't my fucking anthem!

cherin · 31/07/2019 15:50

janista IMO the EU has consistently been careful and reluctant to meddle in what are perceived as “domestic” situations. Like the recent Catalona protest. Its been criticised by some, and plauded by others, but it’s an example of the organisation not really wanting to step in internal arguments. Even in disputes between neighbouring countries like Slovenia and Croatia they haven’t really been very active. Good or bad, I don’t know, but your theory of an EU hell bent to destroy the U.K. sounds paranoid to me. It’s an implosion due to internal forces

InTheHeatofLisbon · 31/07/2019 15:51

We don't need EU diplomats or the ECJ either.

No? The ECJ did a lot to mitigate the intentions of the Tories to make even worse cuts. There are many in the UK who have benefited from it!

probstimeforanewname · 31/07/2019 16:53

But a lot of us are soo fed up of you not taking responsibility

That's because a lot of us are NOT responsible. We never voted Tory, and we never voted to leave. I take no responsibility for this mess AT ALL. I can imagine you are incredibly angry at having to spend money on no deal preparations (or just Brexit preparations) when it was nothing to do with you. I totally get that. But please save your anger for the right people.

If of course you mean "certain UK politicians" or "leave voters" when you use the word "you" or "the UK" then fine, crack on. But please blame the right people. And they are not "my" politicians. My MP is a nutter.

We joined a Common Market not some large bureaucratic organisation with an anthem

As for this - that doesn't explain why you'd want to leave the customs union.

bumblebeejockstrap · 31/07/2019 16:59

coppersulphate I'm glad you don't feel the need for anybody else. Do you really think the state of uk now is only because of the EU. I think your politicians are yet to prove they can do a better job than what we have been doing together for the past 40 years tradewise. And EU army... What army?

But each to their own, please don't come running, if you discover that unity makes strong.

alsohuman i have seen so many shuffling blame. But you are right, we are sick of your show. We started out being sad you voted Brexit, now eeh please leave Wink.

theelementssong think you summoned up pretty good our view of how you think of yourselves Grin.

Jason118 · 31/07/2019 17:03

@Coppersulphate We joined a Common Market not some large bureaucratic organisation with an anthem, President, flag and intent on ever closer political union.
Yes we did, it was explicit in the literature at the time that ever closer union was a goal. Stop trying to rewrite history, it just makes you look silly.

bumblebeejockstrap · 31/07/2019 17:16

probstimeforanewname i get that, as much as I would hate to be accused of horrid decisions made by the majority of my country, from the outside it would still be seen as our/and my decision.

I'm aware you are not all in agreement, as in US with their president, still your country and thereby you pose this on the rest of us.

Being on MN i can assure you that I'm aware you are not all nasty, misogynist, rasist haters of everything not British. But your country has chosen to send a message that differs a little. (You wouldn't believe the leavers they show on our media sometimes).

So sorry, I'm sure you are a decent human being Wink.

iwantadishwasher · 31/07/2019 17:35

@Janista

I don't get it. Why would the EU want to destroy the UK?

Mistigri · 31/07/2019 17:40

The arrogance and sheer stupidity of the people saying it will all be fine is breathtaking.

Janista is in Australia so I dare say it will all be fine for him.

InTheHeatofLisbon · 31/07/2019 17:55

But your country has chosen to send a message that differs a little

I'm afraid I'm going to have to remind yet another person that Britain/the UK isn't a country, it's a union of 4.

Again.

2 of which voted to remain I might add.

So bumblebeejockstrap I'm getting a bit pissed off with constantly being lumped in with the Leave voters. My country voted to remain with a majority of over 60%.

bellinisurge · 31/07/2019 18:29

Bad news @Coppersulphate , although I suppose you don't care: if we No Deal, I blame No Dealers. Because there are other viable Brexit options.
