There are many ways to enforce power indirectly using privilege. Jacob Rees Mogg knows every trick in the book and dresses it up as respectability rather than a subtle form or intimidation and deliberate exclusion.

It's not the stuff 'of the people'.

Meanwhile the newly crowned PM, is making rather a bug deal of how he is the man 'of the people', here to serve them and to deliver their will.

There's a big theme here about presenting as 'of the people' whilst simultaneously serving the interests of the elite and reestablishing its power over the people.

It's a theme that is set to run for some time, and is entrenched in Trumpism too.

This shift in power is particularly harmful to women it must be noted.

'Strong and stable' was 'weak and wobbly' and we should be mindful that in the era of reversed spin, what 'of the people' signifies.

We've long known about the authoritarianism at the heart of leaving thinking. It's only now that it's finally going to start stomping it's feet all over our freedoms and power.

The road back will be a long and hard one because we failed to spot the threat and the dangers of it.

megan if this leave government is so intelligent and great where's the comprehensive list of medicines that are being stockpiled?
I don't know where the list is Hazard, I am not in government. My original point was not that I was saying they were great (so your post doesn't logically follow on from mine), just that all this "thick as mince" talk is a bit rich unless you are sure that you are brighter/better/cleverer than they are and can demonstrate success in life equivalent to or greater than Raab's.

I meant I don't know any stupid people. Everyone I know, work with etc., they are pretty much all bright thoughtful people.

Iambuffy · 29/07/2019 23:01

You're assuming that parliament will still be sitting joanna?

Proroguing seems the wet dream du jour of brexshitters these days...

MeganBacon · 29/07/2019 23:03

when obviously they are winning

What does that even mean?

It means they are in government and making it happen. Beggars belief I know but there you have it. We are hurtling towards a no deal Brexit and no-one has been able to stop it. They are winning.

prettybird · 29/07/2019 23:04

Re BloJob's manifestly unpopular visit to Scotland (as evidenced by the boo-ing at Bute House) muted on the BBC compared to Sky Hmm: despite the BloJob's supposed bravado, what's not been do widely reported is that he left by the back door Wink

BigChocFrenzy · 29/07/2019 23:05

megan You miss the point:

The Tory govt are thick at their jobs, which is actually planning and carrying out Brexit

Being clever at lying does not compensate for that

Hazardtired · 29/07/2019 23:05

megan there isnt a list because they may or may not be thick but they are heartless cunts who have given no thought to patients. There is no list. No one knows what's stockpiled because it's indivdual companies doing the stockpiling and the government hasn't kept track. Your defending these people get to know them.

BigChocFrenzy · 29/07/2019 23:07

The worst kind of thickness is in thinking you can do a vitally important job,
but you are totally inadequate and delusional about it

Peregrina · 29/07/2019 23:08

If any of you haven't seen this thread yet it might make you weep/vomit/eye roll/chuckle/shrug
If you voted Leave, did you/do you want 'no deal'?

What a pity that none of them when they say yes I am fine with no deal also go on to say I am dependent on epilepsy/diabetes meds and it really won't worry me if I can't get them.
When you think of the problems when KFC mucked up its distribution chain, will people really be happy with supermarkets with empty shelves? Yes, I suppose they will, it will be the EU's fault.

I could weep when I think that France and Germany, despite the horrors of two world wars, had enough sense to realise that they had to find a better way in future, but our expensively educated Government seems to have not a clue and think we are still a large Empire which can throw its weight about.

BigChocFrenzy · 29/07/2019 23:14

Winning doesn't mean they are cleverer, just unscrupulous

The history books are full of dumb thugs who beat much cleverer people just by being more ruthless and not following the rules of civilised behaviour

NoWordForFluffy · 29/07/2019 23:14

Jesus. Did anyone watch Newsnight? They dug up a couple of right idiots (though Emily did challenge them relatively robustly).

One quote (ish): 'They said the sky would fall in, but yet here it still is.' This had me shouting 'We've not left yet you thick twat!' at the TV!

BigChocFrenzy · 29/07/2019 23:18

peregrina A major reason is that Britain (except for the Channel Islands) was not conquered ad occupied during WW2

France, Belgium, Netherlands etc were occupied by Germany, then Germany was occupied by the Allies for years

That really brought the other countries down to earth and shattered any illusions that they could stand alone

ThereWillBeAdequateFood · 29/07/2019 23:20

I get the impression people think “no deal” will be the end of Brexit. Job done, there might be a few job losses (other people’s jobs so whatever).
We get to move on from political uncertainty. Trouble is in real life no deal is far from “job done” it’s a political and economic nightmare that will be played out over decades.

Brexit is the biggest miss selling scandal ever.

Peregrina · 29/07/2019 23:20

I just thought that this was worth repeating in BOLD. What a Coward.

Would having a Scottish maiden name entitle me to Scottish citizenship when the time comes?

SistemaAddict · 29/07/2019 23:20

@Peregrina it's fab that thread is t it?! I'm not convinced any of them know what no deal means. To them it's just an up yours to the EU. They don't seem to realise we still have to pay the divorce bill and then start negotiating desks with other countries. They think no deal is the end of things when it's only the start. And a start on the back foot at that.

JoannaCuppa · 29/07/2019 23:21

You're assuming that parliament will still be sitting joanna?

Proroguing seems the wet dream du jour of brexshitters these days...

Thanks. I feel so much better now.......Hmm

My point is: leaving will be fucking horrific with no deal, we know that. The facts are there which show that. All this stuff is bad enough on its own, without then going a step further and saying what might happen further down the line, if there is no evidence for it.

Of course, if benefits going is a fact, then I am interested in finding out where this has been said.

But if we think leavers are irresponsible for presenting opinions as facts, don't we have to abide by the same principles to avoid being hypocrites.

I never thought Project Fear was scaremongering. The facts were available. I do think that presenting a "worst case" opinion as fact, is irresponsible.

It's depressing that a person's need to be seen as right, when we look back on this time, is more important than a little bit of thought and kindness in what they are saying. Scaring people with no facts is cruel.

BigChocFrenzy · 29/07/2019 23:23

fluffy Stupidity and astonishing ignorance are major problems in combatting populism,
along with suspicion of the unfamiliar / furrin and the self-pitying victimhood that characterise those attracted to the far right

iirc Trump said "I love stupid people, uneducated people"

MeganBacon · 29/07/2019 23:25

Hazard I think you'll have to give Michael Gove more than a week in his current job to prepare a list of medications for you. They haven't been preparing for no deal until now. I wasn't defending them, I didn't say I don't care about people's medications (although it's not my job to).

tobee · 29/07/2019 23:25

Where did Newsnight dig them up, Fluffy? We're they just randoms who were vox popped retirees in a provincial town's shopping centre ? Or were they, you know, people with insight?

elprup · 29/07/2019 23:27

@MeganBacon - who controls the media?
BBC tonight removed the sound of boo-OMG at BJ in Scotland. Why?

The BBC definitely did not remove the sound of booing (not on the 10 o’clock news anyway). DH and I even turned to each other to say “ooo, he’s getting booed!” as we were watching!

tobee · 29/07/2019 23:28

Along with being suspicious of people who are intelligent BigChoc. It makes them feel bad.

NoWordForFluffy · 29/07/2019 23:28

BCF, it's sad times when logic and critical thinking are in short supply.

My mum always said (probably still would; she's not dead!) that while I would make my mind up about something, I'd listen to other arguments and reason and be happy to change my mind based on what others told me. I'm still like that. I also don't mind if I'm wrong (past the initial Blush of it!) if someone shows me evidence for it.

I'm maybe a rare beast, but it's all a learning curve for me, and I LOVE learning / bettering myself.

People who just accept what the Mail / Express / Telegraph etc tell them without questioning it baffle me.

NoWordForFluffy · 29/07/2019 23:30

@tobee, some ex-Labour bloke, I think (DH was paying more attention than me when their names came on screen!) who actually looked like he'd been dug up, and some author or other who's clearly always been anti-Europe.

Iambuffy · 29/07/2019 23:32

BJ has said he will not rule out proroguing parliament.

Some brexshitters are actively calling for it.

I don't make stuff up.

Do some research.

Peregrina · 29/07/2019 23:34

I hope that Nancy Pelosi puts a call through to Boris Johnson PDQ and tell him in words of plain English - rip up the backstop in NI and it's no trade deals for you.

tobee · 29/07/2019 23:35

People who like to learn stuff, admit they are wrong Fluffy = definition of an intelligent person.
