There are many ways to enforce power indirectly using privilege. Jacob Rees Mogg knows every trick in the book and dresses it up as respectability rather than a subtle form or intimidation and deliberate exclusion.

It's not the stuff 'of the people'.

Meanwhile the newly crowned PM, is making rather a bug deal of how he is the man 'of the people', here to serve them and to deliver their will.

There's a big theme here about presenting as 'of the people' whilst simultaneously serving the interests of the elite and reestablishing its power over the people.

It's a theme that is set to run for some time, and is entrenched in Trumpism too.

This shift in power is particularly harmful to women it must be noted.

'Strong and stable' was 'weak and wobbly' and we should be mindful that in the era of reversed spin, what 'of the people' signifies.

We've long known about the authoritarianism at the heart of leaving thinking. It's only now that it's finally going to start stomping it's feet all over our freedoms and power.

The road back will be a long and hard one because we failed to spot the threat and the dangers of it.

I "lost" the argument with her as she decided to vote NO because she was strongly committed to the EU - but I did extract a promise from her that if we did - as I suggested was the greater risk - end up being dragged out of the EU against our will, she would campaign for Independence and she has stood by that promise

I tended towards No in the Indyref for this reason; well, that and I'm quite change averse. I am so glad I screwed up my postal vote and wound up not being able to vote, as I would feel absolutely awful now if I had voted No on the day. I'm now strongly committed to Scottish Independence. There's nothing about how things are going in England that inclines me to want to be dragged into the abyss with them.

We will at least know that we stood up to be counted.

and our cards are marked.

Nigel Farage teams up with Trump supporters to raise Brexit funds

bellinisurge · 29/07/2019 18:20

That Raab one speaks volumes. Maybe he thought Dover was in Scotland. Remind me, what job has he just been given 😂😂😂😂😂😂

MrPan · 29/07/2019 18:21

We all keep saying they are thick as mince. Raab is Exhibit B, as Grayling Exhibit A is no longer there.

tobee · 29/07/2019 18:26

Thanks for the very interesting reply @prettybird !

I agree with your sentiment about divides
@Hazardtired. I suppose this one is more of a chasm though. And I think more disruptive to the way (party) politics works. The lines have been drawn. And the swords too!

probstimeforanewname · 29/07/2019 18:26

Raab. Ouch. And this is someone who studied law, has a Masters, worked for a top city law firm, the Foreign Office and advised on EU law.

I am really wondering how these apparently intelligent people are spouting such nonsense....

(on the Dover thing, mentioned that to DH over the weekend as he though Raab came over as being very switched on when he became Brexit secretary - DH said that perhaps it wasn't so unreasonable/stupid as you might think the bulk of goods would come via the container ports).

MeganBacon · 29/07/2019 18:30

We all keep saying they are thick as mince. Raab is Exhibit B, as Grayling Exhibit A is no longer there.
I genuinely wonder how the regular posters on this thread reconcile the success that Raab has achieved in life with their own, before they label him thick? Are you all CEOs, brain surgeons, etc.? How do you reconcile the fact that the Remain campaign has been so ineffective?

tobee · 29/07/2019 18:31

Re Raab's qualifications:- and there's my 84 year old dad, who left school aged 15 because no one told him he could do any different, still feeling, deep down, lesser intellectually than people who went to university. Sad

TemporaryPermanent · 29/07/2019 18:33

Can't stand Raab but would have a tiny smidgen of sympathy if a) he weren't on bloody Twitter which is designed to make people look like idiots by broadcasting their great thoughts before they've edited them and b) he weren't so obviously someone who doesn't realise anyone else really exists.

tobee · 29/07/2019 18:33

When did being a CEO automatically mark you down as intelligent? Hmm

probstimeforanewname · 29/07/2019 18:36

Twitter (and the Scotsman newspaper) seem to be saying Raab's tweet was fake.

bellinisurge · 29/07/2019 18:38

@tobee sounds like my late Dad and my FIL . My FIL is basically sticking two fingers up at that notion now and is one of the most well-read and politically informed people I know.

MeganBacon · 29/07/2019 18:50

@tobee I think you are missing the point of the post if you see it as an opportunity to post about the intelligence of CEOs. And I'm guessing your Dad is not posting on social media about people being "thick as mince".

tobee · 29/07/2019 18:59

@MeganBacon not sure I understand your comment. You seem to be conflating my two posts.

PigeonofDoom · 29/07/2019 19:00

The remain campaign didn’t lie, megan. Do you think the leave campaign would have won if people had been told that it would make them poorer and threaten their jobs? You promise people the moon on a stick and a lot of them will believe it 🤷‍♀️
Incidentally, the surgeons I know are all strongly remain.....

MrPan · 29/07/2019 19:01

Megan. I am a professional. I have an excellent grasp of my subject. I have won awards for it. I know when to talk about it and how.

Raab repeatedly demonstrates none of those attributes. Hence: as thick as mince.

MeganBacon · 29/07/2019 19:03

My dh's hip replacement surgeon was vociferously leave. Anecdotal evidence means very little.
I get that the campaign itself was dubious but what about the intervening three years? Why, when everyone has had the opportunity to speak their truth, has truth not prevailed?

Hazardtired · 29/07/2019 19:05

megan if this leave government is so intelligent and great where's the comprehensive list of medicines that are being stockpiled?

Peregrina · 29/07/2019 19:09

We will at least know that we stood up to be counted.
and our cards are marked.

Standing up to be counted counts for nothing if our cards aren't marked.

MrPan · 29/07/2019 19:10

And why are their peers cringing at them in shame?

Peregrina · 29/07/2019 19:21

Presumably the invasion of trolls is all part of Johnson's propaganda campaign.

Hazardtired · 29/07/2019 19:27

😢Sad b...but why won't the trolls answer my question peregrina?

Grin
Iambuffy · 29/07/2019 19:28

I can't get a phrase out of my head...

"If you don't play the game, you can't lose...."

BJ refusing to follow the A50 invocation agreement and backstop is just that, isn't it?

And HE won't lose, of course.

It'll be the rest of us poor fuckers.
