Westministenders: A New Approach? No chance.

Next week we will have a new PM. He will be called Boris Johnson unless something very odd has happened.

His first 72 hours will be 'interesting' especially if today's events are anything to go by.

His Cabinet is sure to be a horror show. It was noticable who abstained today - they don't think they will be in a Johnson Cabinet and clearly don't want to be.

To move forward Johnson must be able to survive a rebellion and a Queen's speech before now and 31st October.

And be able to unit his party in order to find a way forward.

And whilst parliament has voted to block proroguing parliament, it could still be dissolved if there is a vote of no confidence.

And what happens if Johnson loses a vote? Will he manage to become PM? Will there be a GE.

All the signs are that next week is going to be a hell of a ride.

Enjoy your weekend.

Good job it's a frog, @MmeBufo, as the kids have named it Froggy (original, huh?!).

Fluffy that sounds yummy.

If Joanna is right, the thing to see will be how he gets out of no deal. What he will offer instead?

"Slipped" seems to be the new name for "pairing"

  • maybe after all the MP sleaze scandals, they thought the public might misunderstand the old name !

https://www.parliament.uk/site-information/glossary/pairing/

Pairing is an arrangement between two MPs of opposing parties to not vote in a particular division.

This enables an MP to be absent without affecting the result of the vote as they effectively cancel each other out.

Pairing is an informal arrangement which is not recognised by the House of Commons but must be registered with the Whips.

Pairing is not allowed in divisions of great political importance.

Aww, Froggy! Always nice to have slug munching visitors in garden. We get a lot of toads but I've yet to see a frog here, oddly.

Here's the list of the 274 MPs who voted to allow the next PM to prorogue Parliament. My knobhead MP is on there.

They hopefully will be yummy, flouncy! We did test the scones and enjoyed them! 🐷

(Oddly because we have a pond and frogs are much more bothered about water than toads)

My Tory MP abstained. Which is good. He hasn't gone Rudd

Am I right that Hoey was the only Labour MP to vote against?

Report
MmeBufo · 18/07/2019 21:16

Yes, just Hoey IIRC

Even odder then, as there's no water in our garden! 🤔

Frogs always hop BTW, toads can but only really do it when startled. Otherwise they walk, sometimes quite fast, in the style of dinosaurs from early films.

God knows then, Mme! DH says it hops (I've only seen it hop at a time I'd have startled it, so my evidence is flawed!).

I swear it's lost and lonely. Poor Froggy. 🐸Though it could've buggered off if it was unhappy and it's been hanging around for months! Lots of slugs in the strawberry patch though. Or were. 😁

NEW:

After today's vote, leading eurosceptics discussed a plan to bring about a "virtual prorogation".

One ERG member said: "Lets pad out the order paper with general debates. It will be a form of virtual prorogation."

Sign of nerves after 47 MPs defied gvt today
