Next week we will have a new PM. He will be called Boris Johnson unless something very odd has happened.

His first 72 hours will be 'interesting' especially if today's events are anything to go by.

His Cabinet is sure to be a horror show. It was noticable who abstained today - they don't think they will be in a Johnson Cabinet and clearly don't want to be.

To move forward Johnson must be able to survive a rebellion and a Queen's speech before now and 31st October.

And be able to unit his party in order to find a way forward.

And whilst parliament has voted to block proroguing parliament, it could still be dissolved if there is a vote of no confidence.

And what happens if Johnson loses a vote? Will he manage to become PM? Will there be a GE.

All the signs are that next week is going to be a hell of a ride.

Enjoy your weekend.

Do we know how the DUP feel about Boris?

I agree. But it’s getting harder and harder for the Conservatives to just claim that they do have a majority without putting it to a vote to prove it.

Didn’t the DUP say something about no Brexit being better than no deal back in March/April? Will they definitely support a Conservative government with Boris as PM? Especially since he seems hell bent on No Dealing?

SingingBabooshkaBadly · 22/07/2019 18:09

Charlie if you remember is a Leaver. But did vote with government.

Elphicke is a strange one. He voted Remain in the E.U. referendum and although he voted for the WA the first time round he voted against it the second and third times, and voted no to absolutely everything other than No Deal in the indicative votes. Now appears to be a member of the ERG.

I’m told local Tory councillors say he is a mini Boris - will vote for anything if there’s something in it for him.

Speaking of which, DH had a long appointment with his specialist last week. She told me that during BJ’s tenure as London Mayor she wrote to him requesting help - financial or otherwise, for groundbreaking research on Parkinson’s Disease. His assistant called her to ask - in these exact words:

‘So what’s in it for Boris?’

RedToothBrush · 22/07/2019 18:17

Do we know how the DUP feel about Boris?

Not huge fans. Think he'll sell them down river.

But they'll still go with it as long as things work for them.

Wasn't the DUP agreement meant to end in June this year? But carried on due to no new parliamentary session? Why won't the new PM mean a new session?

SistemaAddict · 22/07/2019 18:39

I wonder what this week will bring by the end of Friday? A fuckwit in power, a rapidly crumbling Tory party, resignations from the right, no agreement on anything, and conflict in the Middle East. History always repeats itself it seems.

Whisky2014 · 22/07/2019 19:09

Can someone do a bullet point thing about the Iran vessel fiasco please? I thought we intercepted their ship. And then Iran have done it tit for tat to the UK. So whats the deal with the US??

SistemaAddict · 22/07/2019 19:29

Apparently we did so on the orders of the USA but that's according to Spain and they've not backed that up with actual evidence. And considering the ongoing disagreement over Gibraltar where the ship was seized then I'm not convinced this is true. And then there's the brexit issues that involves Gibraltar too. Sounds like shit stirring to me but nothing surprises me any more.

Whisky2014 · 22/07/2019 19:48

I see. My husband was saying the US offered help before Iran took ours but we refused it. He said that was on the Andrew marr show.

Maybe this is Johnson's get out clause?

You have to laugh - we want to leave the UK and people like Johnson, Fox, Farage are desperate to cosy up to the USA, but who is not rushing to offer help?

FiveAcorns · 22/07/2019 21:14

PMK

TheABC · 22/07/2019 21:19

It feels like we are pausing at the top of the rollercoaster.
I wonder where we will be by the end of the week?

The cynic in me expects Johnson to scrape in by the skin of his teeth and for Labour to delay on anything decisive. The optimist in me hopes he cannot prove the Confidence of the House and someone else gets a chance at government.

Off to cuddle cat.

ListeningQuietly · 22/07/2019 21:22

Knowing how leaky Concervative central office is, I suspect that not one single vote was removed from its envelope until 5pm today.

Then they have to prove that nobody voted twice and that everybody who voted is a member

So it will take them a while to admit that Jezza has actually won Grin

My cat threw up twice today and regulars on these threads will know that this means something is about to happen...having said this, she’s now in the cattery as I am off to France for a few days, à bientôt all.

tobee · 22/07/2019 21:58

Have a good holiday born.

I know this probably stating the bleedin' obvious. But why does Johnson say that we're leaving on October 31st come what may? With such a massive, important decision, with a deal happening or not happening, why is that meant to be a good thing? Who would do that if they wanted us to be impressed? We have to leave, even if it's all shit? Even if your playing to a minority audience? Why would you say that the date is the most important thing? No one seems to have asked him. They're just clapping like sea-lions!

StripeyChina · 22/07/2019 22:05

What time is the announcement due tomorrow, does anyone know?

Oakenbeach · 22/07/2019 22:09

But why does Johnson say that we're leaving on October 31st come what may?

Because leaving on 31st October has become the central article of faith amongst the death cult that now is the Tory Party

NoWordForFluffy · 22/07/2019 22:12

11am, @StripeyChina.

Oakenbeach · 22/07/2019 22:16

I really don’t want successful VONC straight away, as that would give BJ the best possible
chance the ensuing GE ......and 5 years of a smug Boris Johnson premiership would make me want to emigrate, having never ever wanted to do such a thing. He needs to be given time to be hoisted from his own petard.

tobee · 22/07/2019 22:23

Just had a thought. I know Tories are forever mentioning Corbyn, but I'm not sure if they ever mention the Brexit Party. Presumably, because they see them as the real threat and don't want anyone to be reminded of them. Or I'm I just not listening can you blame me ?

TokyoSushi · 22/07/2019 22:28

I just saw 11:50am for the announcement somewhere, but I'll be watching from 11am (well, all morning) just in case!
