Nothimg to worry about then ....

Steven Swinford@Steven_Swinford

The Hunt no deal plan:

  1. Cancel August leave
  2. Cabinet no deal task force
  3. New negotiating team
  4. Engage with EU leaders over recess
  5. Emergency powers
  6. No deal Budget
  7. £6bn relief fund
  8. Retain tariff policy
  9. Finance customs solutions
10. 3 weeks to strike deal >
BigChocFrenzy · 01/07/2019 13:28

clavinova See comment by the Chancellor, who set aside the money

OhYouBadBadKitten · 01/07/2019 13:29

I've just deleted a rather sweary response.

You are absolutely right Bellini.

Do you reckon we can put compensation orders in? I'd like a private helicopter so I won't have to queue up for three days to leave the country and get back in again.

Clavinova · 01/07/2019 13:33

it will all be needed to plug the hole a No Deal Brexit will make in the public finances

I suppose it depends on whether we pay the £39bn divorce bill - Donald Trump says he wouldn't pay it...

We could also significantly reduce overseas aid - £13bn per year.

prettybird · 01/07/2019 13:40

I suppose it depends on whether we pay the £39bn divorce bill

The only positive of that is that Faragit wouldn't get his pension paid Smile. But apart from that, the "bill" covers commitments and liabilities that the UK has already made. Hmm

If we walked away from that liability, the UK's credit rating would fall still further - which also has the knock on effect that our deficit would become even more expensive to service - which would further reduce money available for the Government to mitigate the negative effects of a No Deal Brexit Confused

Whisky2014 · 01/07/2019 13:44

I don't see the big deal of the 39 billion. In 2016 UK spending was 755 billion and 1% of that went to the EU.

BigChocFrenzy · 01/07/2019 13:54

0.7% net after rebates etc

BigChocFrenzy · 01/07/2019 13:56

Overseas aid is often given specifically to purchase goods from UK firms
and of course, can be reduced or increased, independent of Brexit

Nice to know that the poorest in the world can help us pay for Brexit

Whisky2014 · 01/07/2019 13:57

So why do people think that by not paying it will be the answer to our problems?!

wheresmymojo · 01/07/2019 13:58

Sorry to continue ranting but someone just posted this on one of my threads which also made me want to laugh and cry at the same time:

Julie the Tory: "Just because we pay in the 3rd highest amount, doesn't make us the 3rd biggest power. Germany and France overrule our needs for their own every time."

Me: "Germany and France are two countries, that makes us 3rd Julie" 🙄

I mean obviously she's plainly incorrect about them overruling us but....to list two countries as being bigger than us and that's why we're not 3rd? FFS

dreichuplands · 01/07/2019 13:58

clavinova Donald Trump is in a very different position to any prime minister in the UK.
In addition while he is quite happy to brow beat smaller economies like Mexico, although his new version of NAFTA is actually remarkably like the old one. He has to treat more powerful trade partners differently and despite his fierce retoric has restarted trade talks with China.
What Trump says and does on economic policy is often very different.

bellinisurge · 01/07/2019 14:05

@Clavinova is of the "No Deal = No problem " persuasion. They believe that trotting out tedious reasons as to why Leave is generally good is the same as "No Deal is good".

1tisILeClerc · 01/07/2019 14:21

{4. Engage with EU leaders over recess}
From the 'Hunt' action list.

Well the EU have said no 'side deals or renegotiotions' so is he going to sit on the steps of the EP and talk to himself? There are some nice bars in the square opposite mind you so not too bad an option.

TheElementsSong · 01/07/2019 14:27

&So why do people think that by not paying it will be the answer to our problems?!

Because the kind of people who think this, think that people/things/places that are Forrin or even merely tainted by Forrinness are inferior to noble Brits.

TheABC · 01/07/2019 14:30

I am fast coming to the conclusion that both candidates expect to be stopped by Parliament, so they are saying whatever their audience wants to hear on the basis that they won't need to implement it.

Because none of it makes sense when you try to actually sit down and apply it to real life.

The alternative is that they don't care about trashing the Party or their own reputations. I already know they don't care about the country. I am also bring generous in giving them a modicum of intelligence.

MotherOfSoupDragons · 01/07/2019 15:01

So then what is the effin point, TheABC?

Clavinova · 01/07/2019 15:02

Clavinova is of the "No Deal = No problem " persuasion

I would much prefer a deal - the same as Jeremy Hunt or Boris Johnson.

bellinisurge · 01/07/2019 15:02

I think you have a point @TheABC - a true Tory would never promise this spendfest. However, a true Brexiteer would trot out these false promises and then blame other people if they don't materialise due to, y'know, reality of a minority government in Parliament which has a vocal minority within that minority. They prove, if nothing else, the old adage about empty vessels making the most noise.

bellinisurge · 01/07/2019 15:07

If you would prefer a deal@Clavinova , are you appalled at the prospect of leaving via No Deal or is it all the same to you. And if you are appalled, what are you personally doing about it?

BigChocFrenzy · 01/07/2019 15:14

It is incredible that the "Party of Business", as they used to endlessly boast,

now has a leadership / PM contest between:

the man who said "Fuck Business"
and
the man who would tell bankrupt small firms and farmers that their sacrifice was worth it, for a No Deal Brexit

ThereWillBeAdequateFood · 01/07/2019 15:15

I’m sure I heard on a news bulletin Bozo saying if we leave on a no deal it will be the EU’s fault (lord only knows why).

Is this the start of a general admission that no deal will actually be very painful?

BigChocFrenzy · 01/07/2019 15:16

Hunt and BJ "want a deal" like some people desperately want a lottery win

They won't get a deal by repeating demands for cake that the EU have already rejected

DGRossetti · 01/07/2019 15:19

a true Tory would never promise this spendfest

Is that connected to "No True Scotsman" ?

bellinisurge · 01/07/2019 15:20

"It will be the EU's fault " is starting to dribble into BeLeaver bollocks about No Deal. It seems to allow them to justify this avoidable trashing of our economy.
I think we should add it to Brexit Bingo.
