Westministenders: The start of our fourth year of fun

Do you remember when politics was boring?

This week we have had a Tory MP recalled, a Tory MP caught on film appearing to assault a protester and our likely Tory prime minister caught on tape having a serious row with his girlfriend which resulted in the police being called.

This is a government with a majority of 3 (with the DUP).

There are apparently 100 MPs who are not on board with no deal, but its not clear how far they will go to try and stop this. We do have Dominic Grieve stating that if Johnson is elected leader he will not become PM as he will not have the confidence of the house and can not go to the Queen to say he has. He has recently said he would resign the Tory Whip if necessary, which he has not previously said. The government has only to lose 2 more MPs for it to lose its majority...

It is important to remember that until Johnson goes to the Queen, May remains PM and retains the powers of the office. Could he become leader but not PM?

This crisis would most likely lead to a GE. The only real question would be over the timing over this. Would it be immediate or strung out over the summer? At this point this does look highly likely before October.

If the Tory moderates get their way, then the ERG hardliners hit back and do the same thing even with the looming threat of the Brexit Party or a Remain surge.

Its hard to see how we AVOID Brenda from Bristol being tracked down for a rent-a-quote. And there is a strong possibility of another Tory Leadership Election before the year is out, under several scenarios.

Meanwhile the EU Brexit Team has largely broken up, with most of its lead players having new personal priorities with internal EU elections. Our biggest ally in Tusk will no longer be there to protect us, so EU politics post 31st October could look quite different, and less favourable, to the UK.

Whilst the talk around parliament from seems to indicate that the UK will look for another extension (and this includes from Camp Johnson), this is very inward looking. At some point there needs to be a wakeup call that the EU want us out, and will be prepared to force us to no deal whether we like it or not.

Equally the idea that we could have a PV is also dependant now on EU good will, as we've faffed about for so long with Tory Brats. And relies on the EU still being keen on another referendum. Will this come to a head with the EU saying no and shattering the hopes of the other side of the house?

At this point, what happens with the Withdrawal Agreement? The idea that the withdrawal agreement is dead isn't quite as clear cut as you might think. If its a choice in parliament on the very last day of No Deal v the Withdrawal Agreement what will they do? Will they recognise the moment? Certainly I think there are a few opposition MPs who HAVE started to notice this is a possibility this time around. Its still largely unspoken though. No one wants to acknowledge political reality.

We still haven't hit the wall of reality. We avoided in March. But its still there and no going away.

I think there are two things we can count on over the next few weeks; more outrage and chaos and a slow dawning of the realisation that May was dreadful, but it really could be worse.

BJ trying to reignite people in London over his buses I suspect, whilst making out he does carpentry for his kids. Time to appeal to the remainers perhaps rather than bang on about No Deal and how easy it will be?

Iambuffy · 25/06/2019 15:48

Interesting radio interview the other day on radio 2.

A book has been written on HMQs fashion and jewellery choices over the years and now nothing she does is by accident..

Her "EU flag" outfit was mentioned :)

But I didnt know that for her 1st meeting with trump she wore a brooch which was a gift from the Canadian people (trump was having a hissy fit at Canada at the time...)

And at his recent state visit she wore a brooch that was a personal gift from Barack and Michelle Obama :)

Gotta love Brenda.

As ds1 pointed out to dh, her family are part German, part Greek so I'd guess she's a remainer :)

Songsofexperience · 25/06/2019 15:49

Yes. Someone here said he wants to be PM in quiet times. I'm increasingly convinced that's true.

1tisILeClerc · 25/06/2019 15:59

This whole Boris for PM farce makes the plot of 'Love Island'* look like advanced particle physics in comparison.

  • never seen it although I gather it involves people running around in swimwear.
RedToothBrush · 25/06/2019 15:59

Do they really think it's a useful distraction to hsve people wondering why he's so incoherent ?

Whilst you talk of buses you don't talk of the latest scandal.

It's that simple.

Not so much running 1tis, more lounging.
And screaming, crying, fighting, dancing. As long as it's not swimming (make-up/eyelashes/fake tan malfunctions are too likely).

Saying all of that it is remarkably easy to watch and less shouty that Kyle (which isn't hard really!). Not run out of everything else to watch yet though Wink

The idea of "below the fold" has persisted into the internet era. In my past I have worked on websites predicated on the fact that people only read the top third of a screen, so getting your prices or product or whatever any lower is a waste of time (and money). I even wrote a learning engine to game the system. Which is why I am deeply sceptical of any mention of "AI" anywhere. I know where I'm not investing my money ...

1tisILeClerc · 25/06/2019 16:24

{Saying all of that it is remarkably easy to watch and less shouty than Kyle}.
Sitting in the garden watching the weeds growing is more wholesome I think.

ContinuityError · 25/06/2019 16:27

Ross Thomson as BJ campaign manager Hmmm, I guess that figures, doesn’t Ross Thomson also have form for inappropriate late night behaviour? Wink

Anyone seen the news about the chicken farming at Moy Park farms? It seems we are using a Brazilian firm to intensively rear chickens which are falling below our standards already (I seem to remember reading chicken consumption has gone up a lot with the rise of veganism as people turn away from red meat - so a fairly recent trend for chicken). I also think I remember reading most of our chickens are reared here then sent back to mainland EU for "processing" before coming back to supermarkets to sell in UK.

So, do we think these huge companies will be hauled over the coals? Will we start up our own processing plants to take on the extra workload (investment/training)? Will these companies fold with deals made with Brazil falling by the wayside? It is interesting to me that this is being exposed only as we are leaving EU, albeit a recent intensive farming programme. Maybe that is the point - we have begun aligning with US standards and farming procedures already and too late for EU to do much about it. This and the pesticides regs being dropped...I can't see how EU will be able to trade with us if our standards slip like this.

ThereWillBeAdequateFood · 25/06/2019 16:31

I am beginning to wonder whether Boris Johnson is actively trying to lose the Conservative leadership contest

He’ll probably start doing interviews with a pair of underpants on his head and pencils up his nose. The answer to any question will of course be “wibble”

LonelyTiredandLow · 25/06/2019 16:34

1tis - wholesome, it ain't. However vocab-wise I have certainly learnt a lot. 'Hench' for instance. A few others that I don't use but good to know nonetheless.

LonelyTiredandLow · 25/06/2019 16:37

Link to the Guardian Moy Park chicken story. Reminded me of the emotive backing leave gets from animal rights protesters.

DGRossetti · 25/06/2019 16:47

Since it's popped up elsewhere, I wonder how many Tories would be happy for Britain/UK to become a Republic in order to get Brexit through ?

I'm thinking of a situation where the Union dissolves, leaving just England ... a United Ireland would obviously be a Republic. No idea what an independent Scotland might do, but once they've left the Union, do they need a Monarch ?

So left as just Monarch of England and Wales the incumbent might just make it clear that's the end of the line for the Monarchy.

TL;DR - break the Union, lose the Queen.

Of course if Brexiteers are just as happy for that as pissing away the Union .... well it's the will of the people.

DorisDaysDadsDogsDead · 25/06/2019 16:49

Ah, that useless EU, stopping us doing all our wonderful trade deals again...

So if I have it correct, a 'freewheeling UK' would have to make new deals at less favourable terms to retain trade with Vietnam in future?

DorisDaysDadsDogsDead · 25/06/2019 17:23

Don't tell David Davies or Liam Fox though. Or, indeed, Clavinova (who has put me off buying a Yamaha for my next piano).

wheresmymojo · 25/06/2019 17:30

But who knows how the Tory members brains work.

Certainly not me. The more time I'm spending debating things with Tory members, the more I realise they live in a parallel world to me.

Which is weird because I work in the City in financial services/consultancy and live in the Home Counties but their thought processes are so different to mine.

In fact most of them are so right wing they make Theresa May look like Mother Theresa. I kid you not that a fair proportion of them genuinely believe May was a socialist disguised as a Tory.

Ditto Rudd, Grieve, Stewart, Clarke. All One Nation Tories are socialists. This is going to be the next thing for them after Brexit I think.

Anyone who isn't 100% free market, low tax, small state in all cases won't be a 'true Tory' and will be a 'traitor' to the party. Confused

DGRossetti · 25/06/2019 17:36

Anyone who isn't 100% free market, low tax, small state in all cases

"small state" - so there go the police, all regulatory agencies, and most of our laws. You can't have laws without a state to enforce them.

It's recreating feudalism. Or reinforcing it, depending on your world view.

tobee · 25/06/2019 17:54

Party Politics is becoming/has become cultish ideology. Not for the first time. Rational thought, engaging with reality seems to have been thrown out the door. Can't see it changing for a good while.

prettybird · 25/06/2019 18:14

Listening to Hunt talking to Laura K and admitting that the only real difference between him and BJ is that he could be trusted to negotiate with the EU and that they both wanted "something different to what May negotiated". Confused

Key difference seems to be one of them believes in unicorns that have a single horn on the top of their head that twirls clockwise and the other believes in unicorns that have a single horn in the middle of their skull that twirls anticlockwise Hmm

tobee · 25/06/2019 18:27

Sounds about right pretty. Although I'd say selling rather than believe HmmAngry

"Believing" is perhaps too strong a word Wink
