Trump in Ireland.

The body language speaks volumes here.

'Unlike some of his predecessors, Mr Trump is not making a speech in the Dáil, and is not visiting any official Irish government buildings.'
So does this. I don't think anyone in the Irish government had the stomach for the mass unrest that a cavalcade, official dinners, etc would bring.

(Quibble: Doonbeg is much more a golf links than a course).

Bellinisurge
"Probably you'll ask me about Brexit because I just left some very good people who are very much involved with Brexit as you know, and I think it will all work out very well," Mr Trump said.

"And also for you, with your wall, your border. We have a border situation in the United States and you have one over here, but I hear it's going to work out very well."

The taoiseach pointed out the Irish government wanted to avoid "a border or wall" between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland.

Mr Trump replied: "I think you do, I think you do. The way it works now is good, you want to try and keep it that way."

According to the BBC article ^.

Doonbeg is in the clutches of a climate change.

bellinisurge · 05/06/2019 18:38

@mathanxiety Jesus. He really knows fuck all. You got the feeling when he rolled back on his dumbass comments on NHS that Faridge has popped in to say, "Careful what you say about NHS , it might fuck the No Deal Brexit unicorn ".
Funny to hear him say that what we have now on the border is just fine. That would be mutual membership of the EU, dickwipe.

DGR I got a bill like that OB one from the hospital after the birth of DS back in 1993.

It was itemised to the nth detail. I queried most of the items - $22 for Milk of Magnesia? Helloooo? I got many items and 'OB packs' struck from the list. However, things like a change of sheets couldn't be budged ($45.59 sticks in my head). Yes they had changed the sheets. But the price of the change and the clean sheets was a revelation.

The bill had been sent to me by accident thank goodness, as we had insurance. But it was an eye opener. The hospital had many items grouped in 'Obstetric Packs', all of which were part of the hospital OB protocol - so it was hard to tease out what was actually used and what was ordered but never used.

Bear in mind that was just the hospital bill.
The OB/Gyn sent a separate bill - approximately $4k for the prenatal and obstetric and postnatal services he rendered. I had no objection to this. He and his colleagues were great.

If I had had an epidural I would have had a separate bill from the anesthesiologist.

My late FIL was a surgeon and hated insurance companies and the insurance industry in general. He blamed the insurance system for the gross inflation of costs and deeply resented having to argue with nurse practitioners over the phone for the go-ahead to take X or Y approach with certain patients. He had an Ivy League education for both undergrad and medical school and was dealing with people who most certainly did not, who were fully entitled to question his professional judgement.

Thanks to his specialty, FIL also saw at close quarters the repercussions of 'the war on drugs' and had no time for it.

Trump has said that Brexit and the Irish Border will work out just well. In Ireland.

The man has no clue and I'm beginning to think he has vascular dementia. I mean that seriously.

DGRossetti · 05/06/2019 19:14

My DB (US citizen, but works tangentially with healthcare providers) said that's why they're so hot on MRI scans (who remembers "House MD" where they had an MRI in the janitors closet. Or so it seemed).

It's because non invasive scanning is a low-risk money-spinner procedure. It would be "no-risk", but some smart attorneys started suggested that MRI scans could cause MS, as it was "odd how many people seem to be diagnosed after a scan ..."

Just wait until they start loading profiles by genome. That'll be fun.

prettybird · 05/06/2019 19:18

GP friend thinks the same Shock

I see lots of similarities with the way that he walks (and hates slopes & steps) and his infantile, hyperbolic and simplistic use of language to the deterioration I observed in my mother, as she succumbed to early onset fronto-temporal dementia (in her case, brought on by a head injury Sad). Previously a tall, elegant and beautiful former English teacher, with hindsight, the way she began to walk, the way she jutted her jaw out, the way her previously articulate and refined use of English deteriorated were all signs that she was no longer recovering from her head injury (she's made about a 70-80% recovery) but instead that the healing process had turned destructive Sad

prettybird Flowers

My aunt is the same.

WhatWouldScoobyDoo · 05/06/2019 19:56

Flowers sorry to hear about your mum, pretty.

My grandma had age-related dementia and it was grim.

BigChocFrenzy · 05/06/2019 20:17

howabout "Re Trump and the draft."

None of the other presidents you listed, Republican or Democrat, chose to attack a war hero and say they didn't respect soldiers who got captured

John McCain fought for his country, was tortured by the N Vietnamese and left permanently disabled.
He was a genuine hero, who deserves respect

McCain was also a genuine friend of the UK, unlike Trump who attended at least one IRA fundraiser while the IRA was bombing London

Trump chose to denigrate McCain's service,
in a country where they hold parades for returning soldiers
and where soldiers in uniform are frequently thanked by ordinary members of the public for their service
.... and those super patriots are supposed to be mainly Trump voters

Astonishing that draft dodger Trump got away unscathed from such disrespect

Continuing his vendetta against McCain even after the Senator's death,
contemptuous at his funeral;
even the warship named after McCain had to be hidden from Trump's sight when he visited a port where it was moored;
the sailors on it - who have the ship's name on their hats - were sent away while Trump was in port

Very spiteful, narcissistic, openly racist, probably a psychopath
That's POTUS

mathanxiety · 05/06/2019 20:21

Agree, BCF.

BigChocFrenzy · 05/06/2019 20:22

Bloody hell, I've just read Trump's remarks about the border.
He has no idea Shock

Reportedly Trump's vocabulary has become much more restricted than it used to be,
but I don't know if that's mental deterioration, or whether it's just that he found 3 word slogans got him elected

BigChocFrenzy · 05/06/2019 20:27

My late mum had vascular dementia and seemed quite normal in the early stages,
but then I found she was making some silly decisions about her finances & purchases and kept losing her passport, tickets, keys

The ability to do the more complicated tasks & make decisions is naturally what goes first and this stage is often while the person seems normal in ordinary conversation & everyday life.

placemats · 05/06/2019 20:30

To elaborate Trump likens Irish border to Mexican Wall.

Shock

His views on John McCain! Shock

BigChocFrenzy · 05/06/2019 20:32

"your wall, your border."

There was probably a collective shudder in Ireland when he said that

At least we've found someone even more ignorant about the border issue than the stars of the ERG

mathanxiety · 05/06/2019 20:34

Earlier this year my Dsis and I persuaded our mum to do durable power of attorney (if that's the right term) for healthcare and also financial matters. She seems fine right now (and in fact had to be signed off by her doctor in order to complete the process) but we feel very relieved to have everything in place because things can change.

Flowers to all affected by dementia in loved ones.

www.bbc.com/news/world-australia-48522729

Shit hitting the fan in Australia.

Warrant to search ABC offices, computers, etc. executed. The warrant accords extraordinary powers to police.

At issue is reportage of Australian war crimes or possible war crimes in Afghanistan.

Coming soon to a British broadcaster or media outlet?

There is a lot of anger about prosecution of soldiers for NI crimes on top of involvement in the Iraq and Afghan campaigns.

BigChocFrenzy · 05/06/2019 20:39

Trump has threatened ICJ judges with prosecution, if they start cases against US servicemen for war crimes

BigChocFrenzy · 05/06/2019 20:39

Oops that's ICC

Interesting thread on the legality (or illegality) of Brexit Party PayPal donations:

threadreaderapp.com/thread/1136347870054047744.html

TLDR;) Just because a donation didn't have to be registered, the party still had to prove it was legal.

And they can’t.

PostNotInHaste · 05/06/2019 20:56

Flowers to all those affected by Dementia. My Mum has a diagnosis of mixed dementia. I never thought to ask at the time but we’re convinced it effected her temporal lobe and DH and I have been having conversations about Trump having it for ages.

Mum able to get a normal score on the memory test that’s given at a time she was in a Home as unable to look after herself. Her score on another test showed very significant cognitive impairment. Can’t say how much Trump reminds me of her at that point.

woodpigeons · 05/06/2019 21:20

I hate Trump but also disagree with the way the Vietnam war is perceived.
It was part of the Cold War. US going to war in other countries to defeat communism. The US has a long history of starting wars when they are not threatened at all.
There weren’t really any heroes. US eventually withdrew and the whole of Vietnam became communist.
I’ve been to the war museum in Ho Chi Minh City and seen evidence of the atrocities the US committed.
There was massive opposition to it, even more than Iraq, and those who managed to avoid the draft were not generally seen as cowards.

Littlespaces · 05/06/2019 21:23

The man has no clue and I'm beginning to think he has vascular dementia. I mean that seriously.

I think so too. FIL had it & Trump reminds me of him.

jasjas1973 · 05/06/2019 21:25

I think its more that Trump used his position and background to avoid the 'Draft, something the ordinary American couldn't do BUT then drapes himself in the Stars and Stripes as the All American hero.

Have a listen to Fortunate Son by Creedence Clearwater Revival ?
