Your views?

Brexiteers were asked their reasons the other day. So I would like to ask Remainers

  • what do you think will happen, and what are you so afraid of?
OP posts:
frumpety · 04/06/2019 09:40

Northern Ireland is a manufactured issue

Much like every Brexiteer argument then ?

Alsohuman · 04/06/2019 11:57

Not only is OP woefully ignorant about N Ireland but her maths skills leave plenty to be desired - since when was the difference between 48 and 52 “nearly 8”?

ContinuityError · 04/06/2019 12:10

Mental gymnastics to distract from 37% of the electorate being views an overwhelming mandate.

ContinuityError · 04/06/2019 12:53

Should read - being viewed as an overwhelming mandate.

Earlier in this thread, I wrote:

I don’t want to see US healthcare companies take over the NHS (and believe me, they have been trying to force their way in for years).

I don’t want to see our food safety laws, employment rights, health and safety legislation, environmental protection laws and access to healthcare reduced to US standards for the sake of a trade deal.

Well, the US has since admitted they will expect access to the NHS as a condition of a post-Brexit trade deal. They will also expect us to accept food imports that do not meet our current safety standards, with the argument that the British people can choose whether to buy them or not.

The Remainers in this thread aren't scare-mongering. This is underway now. Are Brexiteers are really happy with this? I wish we could all work together to stop it.

{ They will also expect us to accept food imports that do not meet our current safety standards, with the argument that the British people can choose whether to buy them or not.}

The problem being that if the UK sets off with the intention of buying from the USA because it appears cheaper, they will trash the finely tuned JiT food deliveries that come via the EU. If the UK is going to be fickle and um and ah about this the EU producers will not be able to stay profitable so will 'simply' factor the UK out of their business plans.

dreichuplands · 04/06/2019 17:02

NI is no more a manufactured issue than any other border is manufactured. It is created by history.
People have started dying again and will continue to do so.

I don't want to pay US drug prices to make pharmaceutical companies richer.
Basic medicine like coldsore cream is four times more expensive. Prescriptions even after co pay can be hundreds of dollars for basic medication. I know this because I live in the US at present.

BackInTime · 04/06/2019 17:42

Northern Ireland is a manufactured issue. IF UK does not enforce a border (which they wouldn't), what incentive has Ireland to enforce a border?

So one of the aims of Brexit is to take back control of borders but yet you feel that NI which is the only land border with the EU is a manufactured issue as they wouldn't enforce it. So people from the EU could arrive in Dublin, travel to NI and on to the UK unchecked if there was no land or sea borders. Doesn't sound much like taking back control to me?

1tisILeClerc · 04/06/2019 18:34

The border as a means of tracing people is one aspect, but the other is the goods that would travel across.
Unless the UK remains in customs and single market, the quality and tariffs on goods would be different so what EXACTLY is crossing has to be checked .

Roussette · 04/06/2019 18:55

I posted this elsewhere and want to repeat it...

I hope the Brexiteers are happy now. The wonderful NHS being up for grabs dependent and depending on a Trade deal

Deeply depressing.

This is very close to my heart at the moment. My DH is very poorly and in hospital and has, so far, had numerous brain scans, CT scans, MRI scans, heart traces, lumbar punctures, drips etc etc.

Cost £0 due to the wonderful NHS.

Why why why... #secondvote

Alsohuman · 04/06/2019 19:33

I’m quite heartened that Trump has been so explicit about a US takeover bid for the NHS, it might give some Brexiteers pause for thought.

Sorry to hear this Roussette Best wishes to you and DH. My DH has just come through a hospital stay. The NHS were brilliant.

GhostofFrankGrimes · 04/06/2019 19:47

Hopefully those who have sat on the fence will come out and support remain on the back of the NHS situation. Brexiteers won't care, they'll cry protect fear or price worth paying. I hope leave voters now realise the error of their ways.

Lizzie48 · 04/06/2019 20:00

This really is very worrying, and the thought of Boris Johnson agreeing such a deal is looking like a real possibility.

Roussette · 04/06/2019 20:00

Thanks derxa I have nothing but praise for the fantastic NHS, he's in for a while and I am so grateful to them. Best wishes to you and yours too. x

ContinuityError · 04/06/2019 20:02

Roussette Flowers My DH also being well looked after by the NHS just now.

Roussette · 04/06/2019 22:07

Awww Continuity hope all goes well with your DH. Smile

ContinuityError · 04/06/2019 22:13

Thank you - it’s (hopefully) not a big thing but GPs have been great and our local hospital is exceptional. So many good people.

procrastinatingtoday · 04/06/2019 22:17

Already happened: (some) brexiteers believe blindly to the greatness of Brexit , and are not willing to listen to any sensible argument - it's like those scary cults. This has also enabled being rude to people, even hostile and acceptable to be right-wing/ fascist. Truly scary s**t.

Roussette · 04/06/2019 22:17

I'm just thankful for a doctor's intuition and hunch (her words!) that put my DH on track for recovery. Wonderful nurses too.

Oakenbeach · 04/06/2019 22:32

A real gift from Trump for Remainers! I hope this is seized on by campaigners in Peterborough.

Oakenbeach · 04/06/2019 22:35

Project Fear will be a difficult one to sell when it’s come direct from the mouth of Brexiteers’ greatest foreign ally!

DippyAvocado · 04/06/2019 23:50

Sadly, in the cult of Brexit, this will become something that everybody knew they were voting for of course or it will be another example of "Project fear" that will never happen. There is literally nothing that will persuade these people that Brexit is a bad idea.

bellinisurge · 05/06/2019 06:08

Quote from another thread to show the Brexit Koolaid is being supped.

"Are you suggesting if we leave the EU we will be forced to sell our NHS.

If I ring my doctor, will they say "sorry we have been sold, try the local witch doctor". WTF does this remainer nonsense actually mean. Remainers should be banned from posting."

Mistigri · 05/06/2019 06:52

I think the NHS is the one issue where there is hope that older voters who have drunk the Farage cool aid might start to have some doubts. While many will have private insurance, they still rely on the NHS as their first port of call.
