Outside the box

Since we're clearly better than most politicians, what outside the box solutions could we come up with.

Mine:

Special economic area for NI.

EU membership on an individual basis that you can pay for. We can be members if we choose, a bit like people in NI are entitled to Irish passports. We pay our share of the millions!

Agree with both those suggestions.

If we must leave the EU and the EEA, that is.

If we can stay in the EEA we don't need to pay for individual EU membership.

There is a petition about this and it needs far more votes (and from outside the UK, for MNers in EU countries).

UK Leaves with no deal but England, Scotland, Wales and NI join as four new member states.

Sco, Wal and NI would all be net recipients. England would be a net contributor but would not be responsible for subsidising NI and Wal now and Scotland in the future. Four times the votes, four Commissioners.

I need to think about more about "pay to play" but I absolutely agree with the special economic area for NI.
If anything it might defer the inevitable if unification with Ireland (for those against that) because it should be "best of both economic worlds " for NI.

I thought the objection by the DUP to having a special economic area for NI was that this would separate it from the rest of the UK and make it more likely to reunite with the ROI.

YeOldeTrout · 10/04/2019 18:52

Scotland has advocated they should be part of CU & SM with Norn, I seem to recall.

bellinisurge · 10/04/2019 18:57

@noblegiraffe , I recognise that . Currently, they are stopping Brexit. The Union is more important to them than Brexit.

jasjas1973 · 10/04/2019 20:25

...and all those Leave voters applying for EU membership so they can have a Pet Passport or retire to Spain :(

Scotland would demand the same status as NI... creating a border between England and Scotland.

No, the only "outside the box" solution is Revoke and a Marshall style plan to regenerate the UK 's regions, which tbh is long overdue.

I think the DUP are the best example of thinking inside a box!
