Westminstenders: The gall of the french

We are full steam ahead with European Parliamentary Elections! Something that seemed unthinkable a few weeks ago.

May still remains adament that they will not happen, but the die has been cast.

May is off to beg Macron and Merkel to back an extension but the French are already stating they want assurances we won't screw thing up for everyone else.

May still is pushing for a deal with Corbyn and a Not a compromise.

Still there is no sign of a breakthrough either for an extension nor over a cross party deal. It drags on, but at least no one has mentioned the WA for ten minutes.

We might yet be in Europe for another Eurovision. Psychologically this feels important.

The ERG are not happy.

business now, in many cases, feels very let down that they are not being able to use all their contingencies, which they have spent good money on.

Redwood really doesn't understand contingency planning for a disaster does he Hmm

None of the businesses I've worked for (big FS firms) will be thinking this at all.

TangyToms · 09/04/2019 06:01

Ha, the ERG aren't happy...good!! They can fuck right off, and then some more!

AutumnCrow · 09/04/2019 06:13

So by that logic John Redwood is yearning for global thermonuclear war so's not to waste the bunker under parliament with the crates of Spam and ten year supply of betamax soft porn and packs of Happy Families?

bellinisurge · 09/04/2019 06:22

I hate Eurovision. Just wanted to say that.

wheresmymojo · 09/04/2019 06:23

As for Amber Rudd....she seems to be a bit overlooked but has been instrumental in moving things towards a softer Brexit/away from No Deal.

She was the first Cabinet member to say having a PV was plausible and that she would vote to Remain (again).

She defied the whip and abstained from voting for no deal.

We all know she sucked up the blame for Windrush when TM was the one who made the Policy decision.

She went into DWP after Esther McVey and admitted it was causing hardship and use of food banks and delayed the next phase of roll out.

I can't remember where I heard it...maybe the Oliver Letwin interview podcast but before some decision or other (perhaps abstaining on no deal?) she was told "You know you'll never get the Leadership if you do that" and without a pause she said "It's the right thing to do for the country".

She's not without faults (the 'coloured' reference was a bit of a faux pas to say the least) but I think she deserves more recognition.

With Windrush she fucked up though I believe that it was less that she wanted Windrush people out and more that she took too long to realise what was going on and sort it out (and I believe some of this was spent in discussions with TM who introduced it which then led to her being sacrificed).

Sostenueto · 09/04/2019 06:32

The price of the delay, the Times reports, will be an assurance from Britain that it will not block or disrupt EU decisions during an extension period.
Well that's ERGs hopes dashed then.

The Guardian saysthe prime minister will promise to be a good member of the EU until departure day and tell them that talks with Labour have a serious chance of reaching a deal.
Are you having a laugh?

Meanwhile, the Telegraph also reportsthat Theresa May is facing demands to stand down immediately after senior Tory backbenchers told her that she was now "the problem".
The paper says officials from the 1922 Committee met the prime minister in Downing Street on Monday and warned her that the mood among party supporters had turned against her over the weekend.
!Sources have told the paper that Mrs May "sat in stony silence and refused to discuss her future".
The lady's not for moving!

Accordingto the Guardian,Tory MPs are submitting a fresh batch of letters expressing no confidence in Mrs May - even though, under party rules, they cannot challenge her until December.

But, the paper adds, they hope the number of letters will be so great that they can't be ignored.
Can we send letters too please?

BigChocFrenzy · 09/04/2019 06:35

BigChocFrenzy · 09/04/2019 06:38

I'd happily ditch her if I thought we'd get Rudd or Hammond, but we won't

mathanxiety · 09/04/2019 06:42

In all alternative universes we just wouldn’t be even mentioning a man who gets sacked for lying and only recently was in trouble for failing to declare interests, as a possible PM. Unfortunately as we have seen so often in our Brexit Universe, fact is stranger than fiction.

In fact I'm not keen on a labour leader either!Smile its OK folks I am in a playful mood today. Sometimes when things are dismal I go into silly play mode, its a form of hysteria!Grin

OhLookHeKickedTheBall · 09/04/2019 06:51

Following the exchange about James Chapman's tweets about Raab's NDAs mistigri mentioned

@rosaltmann
Rather worrying @jameschappers feeling forced off twitter atm by disgraceful death threats being investigated by @MetCC Brexiteers language must be toned down. See you back soon James and take care of yourself

Cash was using appalling language in HOC last night.......Labour Woman MP, who's name I didn't catch told him to tone it down.

He refused.

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 09/04/2019 07:01

Thanks @ nutty
Great article by AA Gill. (Had his faults but was a genius writer)
Had no idea about him and Amber Rudd.

The article sounds exactly like my mum, nostalgic for a Britain that doesn’t exist anymore.
I do, on one level feel for a certain element of Leavers who want change, but can’t articulate it.
Surely the obvious answer is Revoke, invest money in the UK infrastructure, nhs, schools, manufacturing.

Even if we revoke now, how long to repair the damage done by the uncertainty of Brexit? Decades to build up trust and welcome new talent. Ironically ( for the xenophobic of the Leavers) talent will have to come into the UK from the commonwealth like in the 50s/ 60s / 70s not thé EU citizens who have a choice of 27 other countries who will respect their rights and value them.

lonelyplanetmum · 09/04/2019 07:07

Thank you nutty.AA Gill was so articulate and emotionally insightful- a sad loss to the written word and world.

I'll tell DH about Morgans- the way things are here at the moment the Italians will be a better custodian of the Morgan.

As for Deadwood Redwood - what ?!! Businesses think because your car has an airbag it's imperative that you have a crash to use it? Whoever is in his constituency- get working so he is updated and replaced by the next election.

Snog · 09/04/2019 07:12

How can May guarantee we won't disrupt Europe if we vote loads of UKIP MPs in?

Flowerplower · 09/04/2019 07:21

Agreed wheresmymojo about Amber Rudd. She's my last hope I think for the sanity of the next Tory leader.

NoWordForFluffy · 09/04/2019 07:21

I also hate Eurovision; at least I'm not alone as most people I know IRL seem to love it!

So, what's on the agenda today, Brexit-wise? We're on holiday, so I'm struggling to keep up (I'm having to engage with the DC while they're off 😱😱)!

lonelyplanetmum · 09/04/2019 07:22

That's a good question Snog.

According to Sebastian Payne on Twitter the Cooper-Letwin bill - is the first piece of backbench legislation to receive Royal Assent in living memory.

AutumnCrow · 09/04/2019 07:28

I honestly think that light-weight chump Penny Mordaunt has visions of being on a prime ministerial ticket.

lonelyplanetmum · 09/04/2019 07:29

Also can't believe we are so polarised on Eurovision on here!

To convert the sceptics you need a party with different national food combinations and score cards - it's such a laugh. If you're a bit of a fan then your bgf (from your youth) may organise and treat you to a trip to see it live, as happened to me a year or so ago!

TangyToms · 09/04/2019 07:30

Woking (J Redwood) constituents voted remain...
