Westminstenders: Pragmatism versus Purity

RedToothBrush · 23/03/2019 10:39

There is one question for the HoC in the next week and that's will you persue pragmatism or purity?

May looks as if she is being sidelined after a backbench withdrawal of support, the DUPs withdrawal of support and an omminous silence eminenating from the Cabinet.

Her speech on Thursday where she pitted the people against parliament has been her last mistake. She's now a danger to the country's stability and the safety of MPs.

The priority for the week is to pass the SI to change the UK exit date from 29th March to the EU's new terms.

After that, with May's deal stuffed due to lack of support and a Bercow ruling it looks like we are facing some sort of indicative free vote. This seems to be being supported by ministers in government regardless of leave or remain.

The prospect of a Tory Leader Election contest looms. It remains to seen if that can happen in the next three weeks with so much else at stake. But this is the Tory party.

The penny seems to be finally dropping about the reality of leaving the EU and how we leave the EU. A week before we were due to go. The incompetence of Parliament is laid bare in all its glorious full scale.

Amazes me that neither main party gives a shit about voting power of the 48% in future GEs

Especially when so much has been made of the one-off nature of a large proportion of the leave vote! Not an electoral segment I would like to be pinning my future votes on

doIreallyneedto · 23/03/2019 19:15

@nuttynutjob -- The arrogance of some British politicians and British people is staggering. For example,
DUP Donaldson calls for Republic of Ireland to join to Commonwealth FFS

He's also blaming Sinn Féin for the stalling of talks. While Sinn Féin are far from blameless, the DUP are ta pretty major obstacle.

You have to remember that thee main aim of the DUP is to destroy the GFA and remove any influence the republic has over the north. They were, and are, against the GFA.

Makes it even more obvious that the 'plan' was simply a smash and grab raid by the likes of the ERG, probably with USA/Russian influence to help it on it's way, rather than a long term effort to actually help the UK 'progress'. These has been no sign whatsoever of any plan to improve the lives of anyone in the UK apart from possible disaster capitalists.

Catching up on the thread post-march. Piers Morgan can go fuck off. So can Jeremy Corbyn. I am a long time Labour voter and I can't countenance what's going on with the party right now; they've lost me for sure.

On my way back from march. V tired as left home 6:00 am. And probably still 3 hours to go. Great atmosphere but very slow going due to such huge numbers. Didn't even get as far as Trafalgar Square as needed to get back to near Heathrow for coach by 6 and we'd been advised that the tube stations around Westminster would be shut so needed to get back to Knightsbridge. So glad we went though

Mistigri · 23/03/2019 19:28

We are back at Stansted Airport after the march. Flight home tomorrow.

We were near the front so got into parliament square for the speeches. Heseltine hands down the best and quite moving too. Soubry was very good too, as was Caroline Lucas (who afterwards came to hang out and chat to people near where we were standing. She comes over as a lovely, sincere person). Tom Watson annoyed me but we had room to sit down by then so we ate a sandwich during his speech.

My DS turns out to be a very enthusiastic marcher and as he has a very deep very loud voice he's useful for chanting.

Equally, British TV and politicians never make an effort to figure out how to pronounce Irish names correctly but will twist themselves in knots to get names from other countries correct.

Oh, I'm not sure about that. Here's David Davis waffling on making it up about German trade and insists on saying Angela Merkel with a soft g twitter.com/PropertySpot/status/1108155476011900928

Mistigri · 23/03/2019 19:31

Oh and the LedByDonkeys stunt was great too - they had the crowd unroll a huge banner so it could be photographed by the helicopters.

phpolly · 23/03/2019 19:35

Misti it was wonderful to see the footage of that banner!

Ds1 very proud and happy to be marching. Dh less so but was a star :)

We didn't make it to parliament square - just too many people.

Heard Khan, soubry and blackford on the big screens.

Ds1 had a placard which read "we ❤ EU" and was approached by an Italian couple who told him they loved him too and thanked him 😁❤🇪🇺 I made the bloody sign! 😂😂

Very tiring day but so glad I went.

That is really grating! That's not quite the same though as Angela is also a name in English. He does manage to pronounce her surname correctly. I was more talking about names that would not have an English equivalent.

Point taken though. He's an equal opportunity arrogant git.

Just home from the march here! I really hope someone saw my red toothbrushes! Grin. Such a friendly atmosphere!
Going to have some wine and then begin the catch-up session Grin

InterchangeableEmma · 23/03/2019 19:54

2 million wow. Have you got a source best?

doIreallyneedto · 23/03/2019 19:55

An excellent suggestion by Fintan O'Toole - The Ministry of Defence has set up a Brexit bunker underneath its main building in Whitehall. Could it just leave the Brexiteers in it for 2 years and pretend it is all happening while Article 50 is quietly revoked?
