Westminstenders: Pragmatism versus Purity

There is one question for the HoC in the next week and that's will you persue pragmatism or purity?

May looks as if she is being sidelined after a backbench withdrawal of support, the DUPs withdrawal of support and an omminous silence eminenating from the Cabinet.

Her speech on Thursday where she pitted the people against parliament has been her last mistake. She's now a danger to the country's stability and the safety of MPs.

The priority for the week is to pass the SI to change the UK exit date from 29th March to the EU's new terms.

After that, with May's deal stuffed due to lack of support and a Bercow ruling it looks like we are facing some sort of indicative free vote. This seems to be being supported by ministers in government regardless of leave or remain.

The prospect of a Tory Leader Election contest looms. It remains to seen if that can happen in the next three weeks with so much else at stake. But this is the Tory party.

The penny seems to be finally dropping about the reality of leaving the EU and how we leave the EU. A week before we were due to go. The incompetence of Parliament is laid bare in all its glorious full scale.

My Dad has now decided the future is for his Grandchildren and will not vote in second referendum.

tobee · 24/03/2019 15:53

Traditionally the Labour Party and the left splits and the Tory Party stays together.

Ok some Tories leave but I think that brexit fallout will mean that both parties will go through seismic levels of stress. But likely Labour will likely suffer more.

“his pound shop Lady Macbeth wife has been at it again claiming the marchers are elitist and would have lynched any leavers that turned up yesterday”

There were Leavers there! A loud-mouthed, goady group of about 25 who were, bizarrely, also protesting against forced adoption.
DH says the only police presence he saw all day was when they became abusive and were moved on. He, and several others, have filmed evidence.

tobee · 24/03/2019 15:54

Sorry two likelies

Steve Baker is the chair of the ERG?

Any chance they are being disbanded or jettisoned for having a party within a party? Banned for using taxpayers' money to disrupt government?

I know anointing one of them as supreme leader is more likely than a mass expulsion but there must be a rule about factions within a party? Political parties are an organised group of people with common views.

The people at Chequers now need to form a party with the Farage lot -they've got the most in common.

DH says the only police presence he saw all day was when they became abusive and were moved on.

The only police presence I saw was when two of them walked behind me in the march for a little while. I'm sure they were doing some kind of ''official business'' but it looked a lot like ... marching.

Don't the Tories realise they're making themselves unelectable?

Are they though ?

DGR I know what you're saying. I'm hoping there'll be sufficient movement away from traditional one-or-the-other voting patterns (due to disillusionment with both main parties); coupled with some defections to Independent parties, to give people someone else to vote for. A lot of people were really stuck to like either candidate in 2017.
Initially this may change things enough that the two party system is diluted, leading to more cross-party working. Maybe in the fractions that you mentioned at 15.24 (250/250/200). Maybe that's what we need right now.
I'd also love to see the death of the whipping system so that MPs can vote with their conscience/ the wishes of their constituents. (Zac Goldsmith and John Redwood - looking at you.)
And of course it goes without saying that we need to see a much greater preponderance of sincere MPs who really care about the people.

As I've said a couple of times over the last two years, I think we're entering a period of nation-building. We will have to noisily and regularly assert ourselves to show our leaders what we won't put up with. (letters, petitions, marches etc.) It will be hard slog.

tobee · 24/03/2019 16:05

I don't think she'd have the balls to say to the ERG to bog off to form their own party. For a start, she no longer have her working majority. That's the whole problem.

tobee · 24/03/2019 16:07

Grieve speaking brilliantly on Sky news right now. Brexit not working he says

MockerstheFeManist · 24/03/2019 16:09

There is also Bevan's demolition of the PM over Suez:

"If Sir Anthony Eden is an honest man, and he might be, ........then (stammer) ....he is (stammer) ......too stupid to be a prime minister.

HazardGhost · 24/03/2019 16:10

They're talking about the petition.

Yayyy!!!

Sostenueto · 24/03/2019 16:11

Now we can see yet again party politics before the country. This meeting at chequers is to save the Tory party who have no plan B, do not know what their next move is apart from trying to make sure parliament does not succeed in wresting power completely away from TM. I am now of the opinion that a no deal is imminent because anything the PM does now will only be to save her party. She has resigned to no deal I believe. This morning in his interview SB confirmed that any inductive vote would more or less be a waste of time as the government would not take any notice. He avoided the answer several times.
On a cheerier note 5,068,238 signatures! And everyone got back safe from the march. Stars they all are!

DGRossetti · 24/03/2019 16:11

Boo-fucking-hoo. She lost her majority after breaking her promise about no election. If she really believe in a supreme being, she might just want to think about whether that was a judgement on her for breaking the 8th commandment. If she really believed in the religious guff she says she does, she might also want to reflect on why the UK has to suffer for her sins ?

But we know that not only does she know the UK is suffering and will continue to do so. We know she wants this. For which there really are no words or sentiments.

DGRossetti · 24/03/2019 16:15

If all (well 500+) MPs managed to band together, and free of party ties vote against TM in a VoC and put forward a new candidate as PM to command the house, there's a way forward. In the meantime, my pension plan is to win the lottery.

HazardGhost · 24/03/2019 16:18

And share dg? Your looking very genius today may I say Wink

SusanWalker · 24/03/2019 16:22

I always feel quite sorry for the mini Rees-Moggs. I really want one of them to rebel madly and become a hard remainer socialist. I imagine them in five years time like the Mitford's, competing to see who can be more left or right wing.

SusanWalker · 24/03/2019 16:23

Sorry, random apostrophe.
