Westminstenders: Pragmatism versus Purity

There is one question for the HoC in the next week and that's will you persue pragmatism or purity?

May looks as if she is being sidelined after a backbench withdrawal of support, the DUPs withdrawal of support and an omminous silence eminenating from the Cabinet.

Her speech on Thursday where she pitted the people against parliament has been her last mistake. She's now a danger to the country's stability and the safety of MPs.

The priority for the week is to pass the SI to change the UK exit date from 29th March to the EU's new terms.

After that, with May's deal stuffed due to lack of support and a Bercow ruling it looks like we are facing some sort of indicative free vote. This seems to be being supported by ministers in government regardless of leave or remain.

The prospect of a Tory Leader Election contest looms. It remains to seen if that can happen in the next three weeks with so much else at stake. But this is the Tory party.

The penny seems to be finally dropping about the reality of leaving the EU and how we leave the EU. A week before we were due to go. The incompetence of Parliament is laid bare in all its glorious full scale.

I'm a volunteer dog walker for an elderly lady and when I arrived today she was I such a flap over the chaos. I told her we just need to focus on the day to day as I didn't want her to worry.

Makes me so angry that this is happening through choice, though. This lady is lucky to have you around Flowerplower - there'll be others, just as anxious, completely isolated. That the government is doing this to its citizens for no reason other than they choose to is absolutely disgraceful.
They've said the people will never forgive them if blah blah blah. I think they need to get used to the idea that the people will never forgive them full stop.

But even the end of the tory party is small consolation for the mess and worry we've had to endure - and that's before any real hardships have kicked in.

4,960,156 signatures... pace has understandably slowed but 5 mil by end of day possible?

Easily - it is still growing about 24,000 signatures an hour if my maths is right (4,960,156 at 12:37, 4,978,013 at 13.:19)

Holidayshopping · 24/03/2019 13:33

4,982,791 at 1.32.

Do we think it might ever make it to 17m?!

RedToothBrush · 24/03/2019 13:34

Robert Peston@peston
As I said earlier, there is a good chance that in meaningful votes on Tuesday and Wednesday, MPs will back either a softer form of Brexit that breaches the PM's red lines - on ending freedom of movement and negotiating trade deal - or Kyle/Wilson referendum plan. I have now...

asked eight members of the Cabinet whether they think @theresa_may would respect the will of parliament and negotiate either of those outcomes with the EU. All said she would not. "What then?" I asked. All feared there would be a general election (which is also what...

@SteveBarclay is mooting, as are Brexiter Tory MPs from the ERG) - which is what you'll remember I described as a very real risk earlier today. You have been warned. Yikes

What I really hope right now is that someone sensible is looking at that clock constantly. The clock that makes sure we have enough time to do whatever we need to do to avoid having no deal by mistake. Because it seems there are enough stupid/mendacious people to let it happen.

LonelyTiredandLow · 24/03/2019 13:36

Please no, not DD Shock

Agree it is to knock the focus off the march.
Someone on another fb group posted a pic of me and dd as her favourite sign Grin

One thing I forgot was an American lady (mid 40s) and her family pushing past us just up from The Dorchester and loudly saying as she passed "Oh look, the POOR CHILDREN!" Hmm I felt like reminding that this peaceful march wouldn't happen in her kids country without a gun fight, but resisted and dd and I smiled in her face instead Grin.

tobee · 24/03/2019 13:38

Plus I agree with upthread that the talk of coup might well have been to get march pictures off the front pages. The old cliche of a picture says a thousand words.

Do we think it might ever make it to 17m?!

It's not impossible but it would require serious outreach by people who have already voted.

It's likely that the number of people who voted but didn't click the confirmation link is quite high - if the email doesn't come through straight away people may forget, some people don't think to look in their spam folder etc.

Littlespaces · 24/03/2019 13:44

From the march. Nobody I know and he said that he didn't mind me sharing it.

Just had an email from my English friend living in France with French husband. Who apparently likes to do loud John Bercow impressions. Grin

Robert Peston@peston
The point is that @DLidington was some cabinet ministers’ answer to the question “what do we do if MPs in indicative votes go for a soft Brexit that Theresa May will refuse to negotiate with the EU?” They hoped he - as someone trusted by Labour - would take over for a few...

weeks to broker that compromise with Brussels. Maybe it will still come to that, in preference to the chaos of a snap general election. But truthfully with so many ministers and Tory MPs preferring an election to a soft Brexit, the cabinet probably won’t have the luxury...

of appointing a temporary caretaker PM.

Could someone put link of the site which lists the firms that have left UK already?

CandidCat · 24/03/2019 14:21

Petition now over 5 MILLION.

HazardGhost · 24/03/2019 14:26

Yippieeeee!

5,003,205!

Littlespaces · 24/03/2019 14:29

Struggling to find that spreadsheet of firms that have left.

L1minal · 24/03/2019 14:31

I'm a volunteer dog walker for an elderly lady and when I arrived today she was I such a flap over the chaos. I told her we just need to focus on the day to day as I didn't want her to worry.

I was in tears earlier this morning thinking about the utter shambles we're facing and worrying desperately about my extremely elderly and very frail parent who's several hundred miles away from me and dependent on medication to keep them alive. Thinking I might not be able to get to them if there's fuel rationing. Thinking that the 'forward purchasing' I've done for them might not be enough. Worrying about them being on their own, worried about their safety in case of unrest.

This is 2019. In peacetime. And our 'leaders' have brought us to this?
Jesus fucking Christ.

The Tories have a lot in common with the DUP

StripeyChina · 24/03/2019 14:48

I've been tearful too. I am disabled, single parent, both my dc have ASD (1 on meds). We are 15 miles from school, 15 miles from a shop, 45 miles from hospital (I'm due an operation in next 4 weeks). Rural so little public transport so if they ration petrol we are doomed. I'm scared

sorry for lack of incisive wisdom. Cheering that petition is past 5M now.
