Westminstenders: Pragmatism versus Purity

There is one question for the HoC in the next week and that's will you persue pragmatism or purity?

May looks as if she is being sidelined after a backbench withdrawal of support, the DUPs withdrawal of support and an omminous silence eminenating from the Cabinet.

Her speech on Thursday where she pitted the people against parliament has been her last mistake. She's now a danger to the country's stability and the safety of MPs.

The priority for the week is to pass the SI to change the UK exit date from 29th March to the EU's new terms.

After that, with May's deal stuffed due to lack of support and a Bercow ruling it looks like we are facing some sort of indicative free vote. This seems to be being supported by ministers in government regardless of leave or remain.

The prospect of a Tory Leader Election contest looms. It remains to seen if that can happen in the next three weeks with so much else at stake. But this is the Tory party.

The penny seems to be finally dropping about the reality of leaving the EU and how we leave the EU. A week before we were due to go. The incompetence of Parliament is laid bare in all its glorious full scale.

badkitten Exactly. Looked like they must have filmed the very tail end or maybe some people cutting down a side street or something 🤔

SingingBabooshkaBadly · 23/03/2019 22:32

The aerial footage of nine minutes speeded up to 90 seconds on the BBC website is amazing though. Made me feel really emotional.

I have known the pro EU group in Liddington's constituency for last year. Wink We have been considering his succession, as he is the de facto deputy PM for last 6 months. We have been in contact with Liddington, (but not as much as the lovely Beaconsfield folks have been with the inestimable Mr Grieve)

67chevvyimpala · 23/03/2019 22:33

singingbabooshkabadly so lovely to meet you too. You were as marvellous irl as I suspected you would be 😁❤

SusanWalker · 23/03/2019 22:33

What a great day, thanks to everyone who marched for all of us, as well as themselves.

We made it to the Truro rally, despite a bad start with DS. He loved it. DD went and sat on a nearby bench as she said I was embarrassing her. There were a fair few people there. The megaphone was a bit quiet so I couldn't hear very well, but it was nice doing something.

There was one leave means leave chap with his dog. He shouted quite aggressively at one of the women. I felt like I'd seen a brexit cliche made real.

Interestingly revoke was the word on everyone's lips, rather than second ref.

SwedishEdith · 23/03/2019 22:35

Hessletine as a 'temporary' leader.

He's not an MP!

BigChocFrenzy · 23/03/2019 22:35

peregrina The thing about voting though, is that Brexiters don't have to organise much

  • almost all adults can manage to vote, barring incapacity etc

Quite different to protests, when they have to organise it all themselves

67chevvyimpala · 23/03/2019 22:37

We listened to classic rock on the way there and back😁

Ds1 and I had a rare old time doing air drums and air guitar 🥁🎸🎵

Dh wasn't overly impressed 🤔

I did my best Freddie mercury impression too....

prettybird · 23/03/2019 22:40

One might be tempted to have conspiracy theories about the apparent Cabinet "coup" against May Hmm

It's done a brilliant job of keeping the People's Vote March off the front pages Hmm with only the Observer (not surprisingly Wink) covering it on the front page.

BigChocFrenzy · 23/03/2019 22:43

Oh, that's good to know, woman
I was worried Liddington might have made a sharp right turn in the last 20 years, after posts by pp upthread

He seems to have a good relationship with May, so she would not fight handing over to him
Times agrees:

Sam Coates Times@SamCoatesTimes

Two sources tonight are both making the same unverified claim: that the only person Mrs May would hand premiership to / be willing to see as leader is Lidington.

Otherwise she’ll resign as leader and force them to an immediate contest
< no TIME ! That would be genuine sabotage / treachery >

Lidington won’t rip up her entire record

SwedishEdith · 23/03/2019 22:48

Newton Emerson
‏*@NewtonEmerson*

Niche David Lidington fact: he's represented the British government at all meetings of both east-west GFA institutions since Theresa May became PM, because she couldn't be bothered going - even to meetings held in London.

1tisILeClerc · 23/03/2019 22:51

{Hessletine as a 'temporary' leader.
He's not an MP!}

Mere details, at least he would have half a plan.

BigChocFrenzy · 23/03/2019 22:52

I know it's blackmail, but any new leader has to be acceptable to May, to stop her resigning
as this would automatically trigger a leadership election

We can't spare any of our 3 weeks for that crap

There is a risk Corbyn might try for a vote of NC with a new PM, since he is so irresponsible
but I hope wiser heads persuade him to put the country first - that would be a first for him^

We know she hates Gove - she sacked him before and was very blunt, reportedly
Everyone who knows Hunt must hate him
So Liddington is a good bet.

However, we must see who has the balls / ovaries / elbows to get the job
Time to go, May, you've fucked it up long enough !

SusanWalker · 23/03/2019 22:52

DD should have gone with you chevy, Queen is her all time favourite band.

BigChocFrenzy · 23/03/2019 22:56

John Bull / Garius take on the Cabinet after May's speech: 😂

MAY: My orders are lost to the wind. It is impossible to lead in these circumstances.
It is over. This war is lost.
But if you think I'll vacate this office, you are very much mistaken!
ALL:
MAY: I would rather put a bullet through the economy.
Do what you want now. Go.

HAMMOND: What the FUCK was that?!
LIDINGTON: I don't... she can't...
RUDD: Michael, how are you so calm?!
GOVE: hMM? oH. I wAS JuST reMEMbeRING THaT i'VE hEArd sOmEONe sAY aLL tHAT befORE
HAMMOND: You have?!
GOVE: oH yES. anD iT sOUNdeD muCH beTTer iN GerMAN.

Is that one of your placards I see, Susan?

SingingBabooshkaBadly · 23/03/2019 23:10

I see Nigel Farage, sorry, I mean Vile-Little-Man-Frog, is claiming Russian manipulation of the revoke petition.

Well, I suppose it shows the mood really has changed if even the Russians now want us to remain Grin

SusanWalker · 23/03/2019 23:11

Yes they did photos at the end just of all the people with placards. DS is well chuffed his placard was on twitter. I can't wait to show him the news item in the morning.

PestyMachtubernahme · 23/03/2019 23:13

ASD DS has just got back. Very over excited, he reckons this march was at least twice the size of the last one. Last time he was a steward, this time he managed to misplace most of his friends, but coped OK.
Really proud of him. He will probably hide for the next week.

He spent much of the train journey up discussing fire retardant materials with Wera Hobhouse Confused

Love it BCF

SwedishEdith · 23/03/2019 23:15

The comments in that Truro paper are delightful Hmm

HazardGhost · 23/03/2019 23:16

Aww I'm so happy singing and chev met up Cake

I made chocolate cake this evening to celebrate the march Grin
