A thread for those of us on the march today :)

Weather still looking good, (perhaps, possibly, even some sunshine?) temps around 12-14, a little gusty at times, cooling off in the evening, so bring an extra jumper if you haven't set off.

Travel safely and see you at the march!

clavinova what took you so long?! I asked way upthread where the leavers were who always come on to claim the march is made up solely of EU citizens. Here you are at last.

Clavinova · 25/03/2019 16:08

Blame the BBC - not me - they reported with the quote.

Toooldtobearsed2 · 25/03/2019 16:08

When I was waiting for the coach to London at 4:50am, a gaggle of Uni students were making their way home. Thoroughly intoxicated by the fumes they were emitting, we were all hugged and kissed profusely for going to the march. They ALL said they would have been there/participated had they known about coaches transporting them there.
Yes, they could have had the nous to sort it out themselves, but had more push gone into transporting uni students to the march, the numbers could the doubled, even trebled.
I sat beside a young man on the coach i was one. He was probably the inly one under the age of 30 on board. Younger people need rallying, every single one i have spoken to ( in the region of 90) opposes Brexit. But they are still young, they need assistance in voicing their views.
I was making my gob go at 17 to be fair, but that ws a long time ago.

I dont really know what I am trying to say here. Apologies. I think, that there is a solid, reliable underbelly of remainers that need to be kicked up the arse.....

GabrielleNelson · 25/03/2019 16:12

We're all EU citizens at the moment.

DippyAvocado · 25/03/2019 16:13

Well, the guy you mentioned clavinova has been living and working here for 20 years, so maybe he's entitled to protest.

"I didn't get a vote but I moved to this country from Germany 20 years ago as a vet. I think it's a really silly decision. Now we've got a deal, the people should vote and see if that's really the deal the people want. I won't get a vote again but it has a massive implication on my life." Chris Reichmann, Ashford

Thanks, TheElements! Have only just caught up with this thread - love your Yorkshire placards.

They also might need help financing travel. My teenager could only attend the march because I bought him a plane ticket. There were a lot of younger Londoners there but I definitely have the impression that the coaches were an older demographic.

Mistigri · 25/03/2019 17:33

And the march was pretty much all EU citizens for the obvious reason that all Britons are still EU citizens and (kinda the point) want to remain so.

I did see some bemused looking Japanese visitors in parliament square! So you can minus 3 from the number of march attendees.

TalkinPaece · 25/03/2019 17:40

mistigri
The coaches were older, the trains and public transport were younger
and I heard Aussies and Yanks in the crowd
it was a wonderfully inclusive welcoming crowd

I do wonder how 1,000,000 leave supporters would have behaved
would the policing have been so laid back?

DGRossetti · 25/03/2019 17:46

I do wonder how 1,000,000 leave supporters would have behaved

Judging from recent events, very confused .....

Trekkingbeyond · 25/03/2019 17:49

It was wonderful, I'm still thinking about how incredible the atmosphere was. Quite emotional I have to say x talking about it on R4 right now

Trekkingbeyond · 25/03/2019 17:50

The march and the petition

LateEaster · 25/03/2019 17:50

I've personally witnessed teachers in a classroom helping the young to form their views on Brexit!

The teacher was totally biased, and encouraged no debate, no research, peddled the racists view.

Does no one care?!

Whether you're leave or remain doesn't this concern you.
Is staying in the EU so important we are ready and indoctrinating children!

BertrandRussell · 25/03/2019 18:06

LateEaster-what did the Head and the Governors say when you reported the teacher?

Clavinova · 25/03/2019 18:10

Perhaps she works at the school herself?

twofingerstoEverything · 25/03/2019 18:13

LateEaster I've personally witnessed teachers in a classroom helping the young to form their views on Brexit!

Sure you have. Did you report it to the head?

Clavinova · 25/03/2019 18:45

Well, the guy you mentioned clavinova has been living and working here for 20 years, so maybe he's entitled to protest.

He is entitled to protest - I was just pointing out that he said there were "lots of different nationalities" on the march, but "really British in a way".

I'm sure the German vet has a very comfortable life in the UK - no one has said that he isn't welcome to stay - or that more German vets can't come in the future. What does he have to do - spend 20 minutes filling out an online form? Would it really be more complicated than that in his situation?

Lots of British citizens in this clip to balance it out;

www.theguardian.com/politics/video/2019/mar/24/peoples-vote-march-up-close-with-anti-brexit-protesters-at-the-biggest-ever-demo-video

I feel sorry for the British street cleaner - not sure if the Guardian are trying to portray a typical Leave voter stereotype though. So much for Remain voters claiming the environmentally friendly badge of honour. You all left your rubbish behind - poor chap.

1tisILeClerc · 25/03/2019 18:58

{Is staying in the EU so important we are ready and indoctrinating children!}
Since one of the fundamentals of the EU is inclusivity and opportunity as far as possible what is wrong with pushing the EU a bit?
It is only the 'leavers' who want isolationism and negativity towards others.

1tisILeClerc · 25/03/2019 19:01

Clavinova
If you have children I feel very sorry for them.

Peregrina · 25/03/2019 19:15

I would imagine you don't care two hoots about the street cleaners Clavinova. Despite the rubbish bins being absolutely chock full, people were still trying to dispose of their rubbish properly. Considering there were more than a million people there, there wasn't nearly as much rubbish as might have been expected.

Millyonthe · 25/03/2019 19:22

Considering there were more than a million people there, there wasn't nearly as much rubbish as might have been expected.

Fullfact.org says there were between 312,000 and 400,000

1tisILeClerc · 25/03/2019 19:26

Where's Surferjet, the other wet blanket?

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 25/03/2019 19:29

Perhaps she works at the school herself

Right

How does that stop her reporting it to the governors and /or head?

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 25/03/2019 19:32

Fullfact.org says there were between 312,000 and 400,000

It said there could be as many as 700,000

I don't actually care, there are groups sayijg 1 mil, groups saying less, groups saying loads less

TalkinPaece · 25/03/2019 19:36

Sloppy work by Fullfact
one source using limited data
I give it 24 hours till they are forced to remove that
as the TFL cameras show MUCH higher densities
