Westminstenders: Flextension

Just wrote an intro and wiped it. So this is as quick as I can sum up.

EU response is extension to 22nd May if May passes her deal by 29th March

Or an unconditional extension to 12 April which could be extended with a plan and understanding to take part in EU elections.

This isn't what may wanted. It gives her less time and leverage

It opens up the possibility of her being ousted as PM in the next couple of days. Graham Brady asked her to quit on Monday. Remain Cabinet ministers are threatening to quit if May whips a vote to support no deal.

The talk is May has indeed flipped to supporting no deal with many think she's pretty much gone full on Colonel Kurtz.

The EU are in effect supporting parliamentary sovereignty and are being incredibly reasonable.

May now has to decide whether to accept.

The whole situation looks explosive and likely that one half of the cabinet or the other are on the brink of walking. And May's power is so shattered.

However she remains the gatekeeper and as it stands if she's hell bent on no deal, it will be extremely difficult for Parliament to prevent that.

I almost spit out my coffee when Kwasi Kwertang asked why they should vote on an amendment that has been rejected twice and in the next breath hoped for a meaningful vote for WA.

LarkDescending · 22/03/2019 11:28

FFS he can’t/won’t even answer a question about when an SI will be introduced to give effect to the deadline extension.

RedToothBrush · 22/03/2019 11:28

He can't even answer when the Si for changing exit date nor when the MVIII will be put to the house.

The fact May has left him in this position is scandalous

@RTB I do feel sorry for him

AutumnNymph · 22/03/2019 11:33

Petition getting a mention now.

Songsofexperience · 22/03/2019 11:39

I do not feel sorry for anyone pushing for no deal

Songsofexperience · 22/03/2019 11:40

Or even remotely facilitating no deal

Songsofexperience · 22/03/2019 11:40

The people voted for pain???
Who does TM think she is? The Dark Lord?

Holidayshopping · 22/03/2019 11:40

Can’t Labour get a new leader in quick!? Everyone seems to hate JC so much now that May can pretty much do whatever she wants to the country and still stay in power!

We need an alternative!

CordeliaEarhart · 22/03/2019 11:41

Or even remotely facilitating no deal

The majority of them are facilitating no deal by not voting for the WA. For differing reasons, of course. But (and I hate to say this) TM is right - the one sure-fire way to prevent No Deal is to vote for the WA.

Songsofexperience · 22/03/2019 11:41

Agreed

Songsofexperience · 22/03/2019 11:42

Sorry that was in response to Cordelia

Holidayshopping · 22/03/2019 11:42

Has the petition slowed down?

Sostenueto · 22/03/2019 11:43

2,940,431 signatures can we make it 3 million by 12 o clock?! Grin

Songsofexperience · 22/03/2019 11:43

They don't refresh as often

PestyMachtubernahme · 22/03/2019 11:43

However, with TM in charge the WA could easily turn to no-deal in the next two years.

Sostenueto · 22/03/2019 11:47

No point keep refreshing the rate its going up. If they do it every half hour you will be able to see better the rate people are voting.
I just want to say good luck to all on the march and thank you for marching for people like me who cannot come. I wish you all safe journeys there and back and whilst you are in London. Have a great time and wave those toothbrushes they might be on the t.v.!Flowers

AutumnNymph · 22/03/2019 11:48

I meant I felt sorry for the position he is in of defending something that isn't defendable. But i have lost that brief spark of empathy now.

Every time he says "orderly" I am filled with Hulk like rage.

MissInnocentFace · 22/03/2019 11:48

Parliament live is my favourite show

Anyone know how it ends? (I have to read spoilers for TV and films on Wikipedia as I can’t cope with the suspense...)

Mistigri · 22/03/2019 11:49

Just got out of our weekly department meeting and several people who were definitely not marching a week ago (actually I think most didn't even realise that there was a march) are now thinking about going, including our head of division.

Also a number of people on my FB who are not very well off but are paying substantial sums to travel from as far away as Cumbria.

Is it going to be huge? I hope so.

lonelyplanetmum · 22/03/2019 11:50

”the people voted for pain"

It is true though isn't it. In some cases unknowingly - but they did.

OMG I agree with our esteemed leader.

The ref was simply a gift horse to the Liam Fox, JRM contingent. Look at their voting records- this gives an excuse for greater austerity for decades.

The people did vote for pain and that vote was always a gift for those with voting records like this.

JRM~voting~record

PickleSarnie · 22/03/2019 11:50

Could I please ask someone more knowledgeable than me to explain what indicative votes are and what they are likely to vote on. What could it potentially mean?

RedToothBrush · 22/03/2019 11:51

Someone has tweeted that the Si vote will be Mon or Tuesday. Kwertang didn't know.

The implication has been suggested that the MVIII would be before the Si.

A point of order raised by Chris Bryant re 12th April about whether the leader of the House should clarify if the house would be sitting on that date because as it stands its supposed to be the Easter recess.

Bercow replied it would be helpful if she did. But didn't know if she would be forthcoming on this.

There was laughter at his barely concealed (let's be honest he did no concealing) comptempt for Andrea Loathsome.

Horehound · 22/03/2019 11:52

What does "si" mean please?

lonelyplanetmum · 22/03/2019 11:54

SI=statutory instrument. Like a regulation that is brought in under an Act or statute.
