After May lost the Meaningful Vote last night by a long way she has lost control of the agenda. She managed to persuade just 40 out of the 116 she needed to support here.

This leaves us all adrift with nothing apparent to a solution.

May announced that tonight's vote will be to stop No Deal. She has announced that it will be a free vote and she herself intends to vote against No Deal. This looks set to be blocked but the amendments that go with it are more important. Particularly the Spelman / Dromey amendment which is pitched to stop no deal completely (it doesn't) which is more about trying to kill off a Meaningful Vote III instead.

Tomorrow's vote is perhaps more important though. Its about an extension to a50. We NEED an extension. However the length of the extension is yet to be argued as is the purpose of the extension.

This is also against whispers that the Italian Far Right group has been lobbied by Leave.EU and Farage has directly asked Eurospectics in the EP to veto any extension. Whether this would happen remains to be seen but it certainly raises questions over an extension is even now possible. This was always a probable action; Banks & Farage have for 3 years aggitated to cause maximum problems for the government. Its also true that they only have power due to this dynamic of being a hostile force.

With No Deal so catastophic that Hammond today made the point in his Spring Budget that, if he feels there's almost nothing he'd feel able to do to mitigate the effects of what he sees as the car crash of no deal, this leaves one option on the table. Ironically it is possible that the actions of Banks and Co might be more likely to have that effect rather than to stop an extension. The question, however, would then be whether May had the guts to revoke.

We certainly have, at least, reached crunch point. Have we done so too late to make a difference? And will our new found sovereignity be twarted by Brexiteers inviting the interference of foriegn hostile forces to intervene?

David,
Yes, while extremely compelling, not quite binding.

Only way to effectively take no deal off the table in the event of no WA at legal deadline is to explicitly compel a revoke of A50.
The Spelman amendment fell shy of this tonight (politically unrealistic) but the result (esp against the whip) has edged us closer.

SparklySneakers · 13/03/2019 22:21

My MP voted against ruling out no deal. The same MP who wrote to me last week and said not to worry about NI because the WA covered it.

CordeliaEarhart · 13/03/2019 22:23

Thanks RTB.

Peregrina, I didn't have the heart to add option C, though it is more likely than the other two! We're stuck with her.

David Allen Green
@davidallengreen

This evening: tl;dr.

Law: nothing has changed, UK still leaving EU by automatic operation of law on 29 March unless etc.

Constitution: profound, Parliament has taken back control.

Political: up in the air, chaos.

Good night.

prettybird · 13/03/2019 22:26

Pesty - the SNP has been putting forward Revoke amendments for weeks (apparently) but they've never been chosen by the Speaker Sad (To be fair, probably because he knew that they would fail).

Maybe he'll be more supportive now Wink

SleightOfMind · 13/03/2019 22:27

Am just getting off my train and putting my mum and wife hat back on!
The little ones will be asleep and sad that I had to stay late at work tonight because of this insanity.
My teenager will be awake and increasingly upset at how this stuff will impact him.

I hope DH has left me some wine.

I did by often post but it’s so good to know there’s a little corner of the internet that is forever sensible.

SleightOfMind · 13/03/2019 22:29

don’t often

Butterymuffin · 13/03/2019 22:29

Personally I really wish Bercow would block MV3. If the rules allow him to, then we're in enough of a constitutional crisis already - let's deal with stopping madness here and now. Constitutional issues further down the road would be more of a concern for me if we weren't setting fire to the UK right now.

tobee · 13/03/2019 22:32

Such a shame this is all so vitality important and worrying. Otherwise it would be hilarious. HmmGrin

MyNameIsArthur · 13/03/2019 22:34

Thanks 67Chevvy

CordeliaEarhart · 13/03/2019 22:35

It's practically a Shakespearean tragedy.

BigChocFrenzy · 13/03/2019 22:35

Abroad it is mostly a subject for hilarity.

From respected medium rank power to global laughing stock in under 3 years ...

WhatWouldScoobyDoo · 13/03/2019 22:36

sparkly I feel your pain. I have given up choc/sweeties for Lent. It’s never been so difficult before!!!!

“It … sends a message … to the whole world,”
croaked Theresa May to the Commons on Tuesday night,
“about the sort of country … the United Kingdom will be … in the years and decades ahead.”

Fairly sure the world has got the message by now

Peregrina · 13/03/2019 22:41

We need a catchy phrase for this chaos, or they'll get away with it

Needs to be Shakespearean, but I can't think of one myself.

jasjas1973 · 13/03/2019 22:41

I don't really see what has changed, she has lost a few non legally binding votes and is still PM in a very weak Govt, dependant on DUP.

Default is still no-deal on 29/03 which she is very happy with.

May has bought fwd MV3 and unless Bercow stops it, no doubt 4 and 5 too, any extension will bring about further MV's

Its all looking grim atm.

TheNumberfaker · 13/03/2019 22:42

I agree with prettybird timing is everything...

LurpakIsTheOnlyButter · 13/03/2019 22:43

Jesus. I've been reading this thread all day and have only just caught up.

The mind boggles. I was just about caught up last night and I haven't even watched the news as this thread makes more sense, and is generally truthful and well constructed in the responses.

I am truly at a loss as to what is happening now and the possible outcomes by end of march. The goalposts move at an alarming rate and rules seem to be suspended on a whim.

Stop the UK, I'd like to get off now.

On a final note - spoon pantaloons needs a spot in Viz. Grin marvelous!!!

Tanith · 13/03/2019 22:44

"We need a catchy phrase for this chaos, or they'll get away with it
C'mon Westministenders, think of something"

Does it have to be repeatable in polite company BCF? Because DH has come up with some choice ones.

Personally, I think simply "Brexit" will be quite enough to have future generations cringing with embarrassment and shame.

BigChocFrenzy · 13/03/2019 22:44

Martina also wrote:

And in Brussels, one EU diplomat warned ominously that “behind the scenes people are increasingly saying it is better to call it quits”,
which is diplomatic speak for “so completely done with the UK’s shit”.

BigChocFrenzy · 13/03/2019 22:47

I don't think Westministenders is polite company, tanith Grin
However, we do need a public slogan too,

maybe Winter of Madness, or Winter of Wild Willy-Waving
in the same theme as Winter of Discontent

Icantreachthepretzels · 13/03/2019 22:51

It's been going on for a heck of a lot longer than a winter though.

urgent

Moral dilemma. A leaver colleague currently due back from mat leave is asking me to,urgently counter sign her infant child's passport tomorrow. Initially I thought I would be signing th e back of a passport photo of a baby that looks like all others. Now it seems more is demanded including my own passport details thus a more active part in enabling this kid to have one of the last Eu passports issued.

I am very conflicted.

By god, Steve Baker is an insufferable prick even by ERG standards.
