A thread for sharing details of our stashes: what we have, what we need, good hiding places and all sorts of hints and tips to help prepare for shortages in the event of a no deal brexit.

I still want some of Asda's bargain beans! I've not managed to get there yet as I've been unexpectedly busy.

BercowsSilkTie · 12/04/2019 17:50

Bargain beans? do you jazz them up by adding other ingredients? Mine insist on Heinz and we can all tell the difference. We don't eat a lot of them though so I don't buy them often. I don't buy many branded products for other things but beans have to be Heinz 🙄

BlackeyedGruesome · 12/04/2019 18:29

So would I if I actually had any room to put them.

I am going to have to reduce the size of the stash so I can use the cupboards more easily.

bellinisurge · 12/04/2019 19:01

I'm with you on Heinz beans @BercowsSilkTie . When I went through a phase of acute poverty, I had no baked beans rather than copies. They symbolise lots of good things for me Grin

BlackeyedGruesome · 12/04/2019 19:50

Prefer Branson beans as I think they have fucked with the Heinz recipe since I was a kid. They had Branston beans on offer a couple of months ago so I have rather a lot. I always get loads when they are on offer as though Aldi cheap beans are ok they are just not the same.

NoWordForFluffy · 12/04/2019 22:59

We buy low salt and sugar supermarket beans. I don't eat them and the kids don't complain!

@Prettybird, you can't beat 'full fat' Irn Bru for a hangover! Grin

prettybird · 13/04/2019 08:39

Full fat Irn Bru is indeed the go-to hangover cure, Fluffy Grin

We'd found (and been given) a can of the old high(er still) sugar formulation in a friend's fridge, which ds was keeping for a special occasion. Unfortunately he "kept" it in the fridge and dh drank it by accident Shock

Hence me having to go into EBay to find more supplies for ds Grin (Memo to self: find some more for his birthday Wink)

BlackeyedGruesome · 13/04/2019 08:42

Yuk and yuk again.

NoWordForFluffy · 13/04/2019 08:52

Full fat Irn Bru is indeed the go-to hangover cure, Fluffy

I think this is the most important lesson I learned when I was working in Glasgow! 😂😂

aprarl · 13/04/2019 08:52

We only bought things we needed. Why would we give it all away and rebuy it? Confused

I too love having full cupboards, we've never had that before ever. It's been a revelation for us.

BercowsSilkTie · 13/04/2019 09:21

Me too @aprarl. It was great when it snowed to not run out of anything and just stay snuggled up. If ill it's great to know you don't have to rely on anyone else to go to the shop for you. It's great for the weeks I've not got much money. The only bad thing is that I've eaten too much of the chocolate Blush

TheElementsSong · 13/04/2019 09:59

We're eating some of the stash - the things with a shorter shelf-life, like UHT milk and juice, plus our freezer meals - with a view to restocking for October. We're expecting to have a very cheap few months of eating Grin

prettybird · 13/04/2019 10:14

I've got a couple of pheasant in the freezer (bought for Christmas - but we ended up having turkey leftovers) which I can now enjoy Smile

Triglesoffy · 13/04/2019 10:47

I’m going to use up everything from the freezer and then start again in September. A lot of my store cupboard items have 2020 dates on them.

downcasteyes · 13/04/2019 10:49

I only bought things with a long life - most of the cans I have are best before 2021, and I have tons of dried pulses etc which will keep forever.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 13/04/2019 13:22

We decided to give ourselves a rest from being sensible this weekend, so our shopping only cost us £24 for the week and hardly any time needed in the shops. That was nice

BercowsSilkTie · 13/04/2019 17:04

Macaroni cheese a la Bercow made with uht milk in the oven now.
We are having our Easter dinner tomorrow so will use some of the things I've stockpiled for that. We are going to bake our chocolate cake in the morning. Chocolate fudge cake with ganache frosting and decorated with the mini eggs I've been stashing under the bed.

BlackeyedGruesome · 13/04/2019 17:21

Sounds lovely.

oopslateagain · 15/04/2019 13:53

I absolutely love my stockpile as it makes shopping so easy! Mine is easily accessible (cupboard under the stairs) and whenever I use a tin/packet from my kitchen cupboard I replace it with one from my stash and just buy another on the next shop. I never run out of anything and I've always got extras.

Should have done this years ago Grin

AutumnCrow · 15/04/2019 14:59

Some stuff has gone to the food bank already, and there's some more to go. I'll replenish in September.

Easilyflattered · 15/04/2019 15:37

I've got some food to donate, but some we're eating. I have quite a long time between paychecks due to a change of jobs so it's worked out well to not spend much in supermarkets for a few weeks. Also it's school holidays and my kids are a pain in supermarkets so I'm glad I don't need to go.

mum2jakie · 16/04/2019 19:28

Kids are on school holidays so making a massive dent on my stockpile already! Bloody good job we didn't no deal - think the stash would have only lasted a few days if we couldn't top up at the supermarket. It's been so handy having a box of extra supplies in stock though.

Kittywampus · 16/04/2019 21:23

I've just been through the stockpile - no easy task because I have things squirreled away in various places. I've sorted out what needs eating up which is basically :

Fruit juice (mostly has dates this summer)
Longlife milk (ditto, will be used for camping trips)
Cereal bars
Bread mix
Fresh coffee (this actually has a long date but according to fussy-bugger dp starts to go stale before the expiry date).

Everything else has long enough dates that we can keep it till October.

I can actually see them extending again in October, and the stockpile could turn into a long term thing.

BercowsSilkTie · 16/04/2019 22:54

I'm loving my stockpile and it's definitely going to be a thing I always do from now on. Not to such an extent but I'll definitely keep extra supplies in.
The children are off this week and we have done a few trips out so we are using the treats stash. It normally costs a small fortune to go on a day trip with all the snacks so having them in already is great. We are going out for the day tomorrow and I've got plenty of treats to keep them happy on the train journey.
I'm enjoying remembering I've got various things stashed away, like cranberry sauce when I did a proper dinner with roast potatoes at the weekend.
I ran out of foil earlier to wrap the sandwiches for tomorrow but then remembered there was a roll in the brexit cupboard.
It sure as hell beats having to drag 3 children out to the shops at dinner time when you discover you're out of something you need Smile
The bottled water I have is good until 2021 so no need to use that up any time soon which is good.
The sweets and chocolate will go quickly but I think that's a good thing! Less temptation on a regular basis Blush

BlackeyedGruesome · 17/04/2019 16:14

DD likes two types of cous cous from Aldi and thus we all now have a food that just requires hot water to cook just in case of emergencies
