I've just placed another Morrison's order to top us up. It's the lack of fresh stuff that bothers me as we get through a ridiculous amount of fruit and veg. It'll be hard to explain lack of these to small people.

BlackeyedGruesome · 02/04/2019 11:07

arrrrrrgggggg...

More supplies or not?

Where to hide them.

List:
Cheese
Potatoes
Fresh vegetables: onions, carrots, peppers , aubergines, mushrooms, tomatoes,
Frozen veg: peas and sweetcorn
Loo roll
Phone
Microwave
Two mobile phones,
Bread flour
Yeast
Part baked bread
Tortillas/ wraps
Naan bread
Mugshots with no egg or milk.
Rice pudding.
Tinned tomatoes, 8
Kidney beans
Raisins
Sultanas
Olives

Top up everything on weekly shop.

I have found a small space under the dining room table to fill. Need to find some more hidey holes.

BlackeyedGruesome · 02/04/2019 11:11

I hope to be able to get some fresh stuff and use the stash to top up.

It is impossible to stash enough for any extended period in a small flat. I will prepare as best as I can and trust the rest will work out.

hobblingawayslowly · 02/04/2019 11:11

How much stuff do people have? I want to stockpile some things but I live in a tiny flat so very little storage. I don't know how much to buy!

hobblingawayslowly · 02/04/2019 11:12

cross post with gruesome there.

Cloudtree · 02/04/2019 11:38

I've been using some bits but topping them up. I need more butter and cheese.

I found some good and very cheap packs of sundried tomatoes and peppers in garlic oil in home bargains a few days ago. Perfect for home made pizzas. I think Ive mentioned earlier in the thread that their shrink wrapped corn on the cob is good too. The DC had it on the BBQ on saturday and said it was just as nice as fresh so I'll get a load more of that since it has really long dates on it.

I found DS1 in the loft hunting out crunchy nut cornflakes this morning. I glared at him and told him to make sure he'd updated the log! Grin

bellinisurge · 02/04/2019 11:52

Focus on what is realistic for you in terms of storage and in terms of budget.
I am a general prepper and yet I still run out of stuff or overlook stuff.
No one will have the perfect amount or the perfect stash.

hobblingawayslowly · 02/04/2019 11:59

Our budget is pretty big (at the moment anyway) but storage is the issue. I've just done a big shop of tinned stuff - I'll work out where to put it when it gets here!!!

Need to clear out under the bed properly then stuff can go there. I also have space under DS's bed, behind the TV, in the TV cabinet, probably in the wardrobe too. We have a bit of space in the loft though not much.

Does anyone store any foodstuffs in the car?

So far I've got:

10x packets of different types of pasta
6x packets instant mash
3kg of oats
2kg of rice
About 12 tins of different types of fruit
6x tins chickpeas
6x tins kidney beans
6 x tins borlotti and cannellini beans
12 x tins tomatoes
4 x coconut milk
6 x UHT milk cartons
6 x tinned sweetcorn
2kg bread flour
Lots of instant yeast
Salt
Stock cubes
Tinned fish - tuna, anchovies, mackerel, sardines
Olive oil
Loo roll
Nappies
Washing up liquid
Medicines - paracetamol, ibuprofen, piriton and other antihistamines, savlon
Toothbrushes and toothpaste
Bin liners, foil, cling film
Teabags
Lemon juice
Herbs
Garlic puree, ginger puree, spinach puree

I can't stock up on fresh stuff sadly, really don't have the room. Don't even have a garden.

NoWordForFluffy · 02/04/2019 12:23

I won't store food in the car; it gets too hot when the sun is out for optimum storage.

hobblingawayslowly · 02/04/2019 12:25

Good point, hadn't thought of that.

My flat is like an oven in summer sadly, but not much I can do about that.

BlackeyedGruesome · 02/04/2019 12:47

put things like milk and medicines in the coolest part of your flat. (understairs for me)

I would get some dried fruit like sultanas and raisins as you only need 30g for a portion. ie less space!

my flat is 650feet square and I have used: understairs space, (not in every flat to be fair) beside furniture in a small gap one tin wide
under dining room table
on top of furniture

other people have mentioned under beds, behind sofas, on top of kitchen cupboards (that was in use anyway) behind books onthe book shelf, behind the kick boards in teh kitchen, on top of wardrobes, at the back of wardronbes. (mine are full anyway)

I have a cupboard beside the toilet that I have filled and the space behind the toilet has toilet cleaner

there might be space next to your washing machine for detergent or colour catchers if you use them,

I have more packs of spaghetti than fusilli as the spaghetti is dense and thin packs and can slip in places.

yeast packs, instant mash/custard packs can all slip in those tiny gaps.

NoWordForFluffy · 02/04/2019 13:00

We have books behind our books. We have loads of them!

We're using under the bed and on top of the wardrobe in the main. We have a windowsill in the utility with washing stuff inc colour catchers.

Our kitchen cupboards are rammed, as are the freezers!

bellinisurge · 02/04/2019 13:17

Trouble with storing stuff in the car, apart from heat etc, is that lugging extra stuff about in your car incurs extra fuel usage. And this is an opportunity for me to remind everyone to get in the habit of never letting your fuel tank go below half full.

havingtochangeusernameagain · 02/04/2019 14:59

The fuel thing worries me the most to be honest. I am sure there will be food, albeit possibly not what I necessarily want to eat.

But not being able to drive anywhere would be a real problem.

However, I am going to buy a couple of spare inner tubes for my bike tomorrow. That won't help me get to my mum's for Easter though (need a full tank of petrol (probably a bit more) for the round trip :(

bellinisurge · 02/04/2019 15:46

I don't know if you were old enough to drive during the fuel strikes 20 years ago. If everyone is in the same boat it's kind of "easier ". No unnecessary journeys and if you are on the motorway, a strict 55 mph helps with fuel consumption as well as minimum revving. I remember how slow the motorways were because everyone was sticking to a fuel economy friendly 55 mph.
Don't store extra fuel in cans at home and do take advantage of your petrol tank to store fuel by getting into the habit of never letting it go below half full. Not easy. Stuff happens to interrupt your plans on this. But try.

BercowsSilkTie · 02/04/2019 16:16

The treats are now under dd2's bed in a bag to stop me eating them at night 😩 She's unlikely to find them.
I've added 2 tins of soup and cotton wool pads to mum's stash today and told her to keep the tank topped up. She's got quite a bit of stuff now both at home and at nine.

NoWordForFluffy · 02/04/2019 16:20

We're visiting my parents overnight on 12 April (great timing!) so will fill up as soon as we arrive and will keep the car topped up as much as possible. We don't really use it too much, so should be OK anyway.

BlackeyedGruesome · 03/04/2019 07:32

I am working my way through the medicine stash... and tissues stash.

Rhubarbisevil · 03/04/2019 07:37

I’ve been eating I to my stash (literally Blush) so time to stick up again. DH eats a lot of bread but that’s too bulky to store in the freezer. I have lots of flour and yeast for emergency bread though.

I agree with PP - keeping fresh stuff is a worry. I’m trying to buy food with the longest Use By dates on.

bellinisurge · 03/04/2019 07:44

Dare I extol the virtues of a dehydrator again? It's a general prepper thing and my exploits with mine cause a bit of amusement among other general Preppers. And regular references to Eddie in Friends.
I have fruit and veg dehydrated in my general stash. My fussy dd demolishes every fruit leather I can produce.
It cost me about £30. It's a bit of a faff. But I have loads of stuff that I dehydrate fresh to add in soups etc. Or on porridge etc with fruit.

havingtochangeusernameagain · 03/04/2019 07:47

I am old enough but we missed it because we happened to be on holiday that week. So our car was locked away in an airport car park with a fairly full tank of fuel in it. We didn't even realise there had been a problem until we got back.

Thanks for the tips about driving at 55mph etc. Hopefully won't need them!

havingtochangeusernameagain · 03/04/2019 07:51

Oh yes and my father decided it would be a great idea to store a drum of petrol in his garage. It was a standalone garage, not that close to his house or anyone else's, but how stupid can you get? Oh well that was my father for you ;)

SalrycLuxx · 03/04/2019 07:59

Which dehydrator do you have bellini?

NoWordForFluffy · 03/04/2019 12:28

Bloody hell. Your dad was bonkers, @havingtochangeusernameagain!

My kids wouldn't go for dehydrated fruit etc as part of the appeal to them is the crunching! 😂😂

Bluntness100 · 03/04/2019 12:30

Are people not getting rid of their stock piles now? Confused
