This morning Jeremy Hunt declared that, 'With vision on both sides we can find a way through that has the support of Parliament and also works for the EU'

Of course this is 18th February 2019 and the UK has yet to demostrate they understand the problem, much less have the vision to solve it. And we leave the EU next month.

It needs to be stressed at this point: DON'T FORGET TO FOCUS ON WHAT REALLY MATTERS

Everything else is a tactic to make you close your eyes and miss what is really going on. Everything. Brexit looks increasingly like a hypnotist making their subject do ever increasing acts of ridiculousness on stage. Except I do not know if the public or the politicians are that poor sod. It is the magician who uses tricks of slight of hand to make you look the wrong way, whilst they makes all the big moves out of your vision.

There are so many stories that are coming out to try and make you miss what the government are failing to do. Stay focused. We can't ignore all these stories, but understand whether they are really important to the end game too.

A labour split, a march on the 23rd March, talk of a PV, the Brady amendment, the Malthouse Compromise, Cooper-Boles halting no deal?

No we need more than that.

The time for fantasies are gone. Its time to face reality and be pragmatic. The only thing that matters is the approaching cliff. Which we will go over not on the 29th March but in the next couple of weeks. We might not realise the ground disappearing beneath our feet at first. Our momentum as we go forward will carry for a short while before gravity kicks in.

But we can not defy the laws of physics and suddenly be able to fly because we develop magic superhuman powers of vision.

And no one will come to save us either.

Our national humilation will be total, if we don't acknowledge what is coming and stop.

An equally valid question is to reverse the point and ask why, given all the points you make, aren't we seeing a Labour landslide in sight ?

I think the answer to that is ‘Jeremy Corbyn’

@QueenOfThorns - I think your right Jeremy and the concern that he is just too far left. I don't mind him being pro-Palestinian(I describe myself as pro-palestinian and anti-Israel , but I am all about freedom to practice your own religion)- but I can't endorse terrorism, also there's his lack of comment on Venezuela.
I think he is dangerous. There is the whole thing about labour policy and the people vote - which he seems to have conveniently forgotten, that to the meeting with Theresa May he took in-elected advisors - not his brexit secretary. With a moderate in charge I would vote labour - easy. I have to hope the "tiggers" run someone in my electorate.

DGRossetti · 19/02/2019 12:23

Jeremy and the concern that he is just too far left.

The thing is, how many really radical policies actually make it to the country ?

my antipathy towards Corbyn has nothing to do with anything except his repeated backing Brexit.

wheresmymojo · 19/02/2019 12:38

Could someone PLEASE explain to me why everyone still wants to vote Tory despite austerity, the current state of schools and the NHS, UC, and the pig’s ear they’re making of Brexit? I’m so confused!

From Tory voters I know:

  • Because they don't want their own taxes to rise and as they're financially comfortable with adult children and private healthcare they don't particularly feel any impact of austerity
  • They are opposed in principle to higher taxes
  • They don't know who else to vote for as they see a Corbyn/McDonnell Govt as even more damaging to the economy and business than Brexit

One of my children is abroad. I still have no idea whether I will be able to see her this Easter holiday ....

BigChocFrenzy · 19/02/2019 12:39

... his minimising & ignoring anti-semitism and the bullying of women in his party - often by his supporters

BigChocFrenzy · 19/02/2019 12:43

One spiteful act by Hatton that stuck in my mind all these years :

David Boothroyd

In memoriam Harthill Greenhouses, Liverpool.

When the gardeners refused to join a political 'Day of Action' in 1984, Derek Hatton closed the site, sacked the gardeners and then demolished the greenhouses

< I remember one gardener saying he was forced to demolish the prize-winning council garden he created, while working out his notice >

BigChocFrenzy · 19/02/2019 12:46

John Rentoul Retweeted Colin Byrne@capbyrne

All this "stay and fight" stuff this morning is starting to sound thin & naive.

This isn't like the 80's when the Militant problem was fairly localised & we had a leader determined to root it out.

This is a top down wholesale takeover by political aliens & flat earthers.
Wise up

Could someone PLEASE explain to me why everyone still wants to vote Tory despite austerity, the current state of schools and the NHS, UC, and the pig’s ear they’re making of Brexit? I’m so confused!

Because everyone would be making a pig's ear of brexit. It's a pigs ear of a situation with no magic solutions.

Because austerity/financial caution is necessary in a situation where the country is in debt.

Because I fundamentally agree with a capitalist society.

Because the thought of the current labour leaders in power fills me with dread and there's no other viable alternative. If the labour party was more towards the centre I might feel differently.

QueenOfThorns · 19/02/2019 12:49

I can completely see why the wealthy vote Tory, but surely they’re in the minority? And the proportion of the population that’s ‘alright Jack’ must be dwindling and the pace of that decline will rapidly increase after a Brexit of any flavour? The Tories somehow managed to convince the electorate that they’re the party of working people, but can anybody possibly still believe that?

I was taught in no uncertain terms by a history teacher that proportional representation is an evil thing (leading to Hitler etc) and I’ve really struggled to shake that belief off. But now it seems clear how many people are disenfranchised by the current system and how change is desperately needed.

SusanWalker · 19/02/2019 12:56

I don't think JC is a good leader. If there was a crisis I don't think he would cope very well.

I also really dislike the way he talks to reporters outside his house. Really passive aggressive 'so nice to see you.' Petty I know but would it hurt him just to say politely 'good morning, I'm not going to comment on that.'

BigChocFrenzy · 19/02/2019 12:57

Why do people who are not well off vote for hard right Tories - and Trump Hmm
(btw, In some photos of pro-Brexit marches, i spotted Stars & Stripes among the Union Jacks)

Thomas Frank summarised in his Trump book "What's the Matter With Kansas":

"It's like a French Revolution in reverse, in which the workers come pouring down the street screaming more power to the aristocracy."

QueenOfThorns · 19/02/2019 12:58

Because austerity/financial caution is necessary in a situation where the country is in debt.

Even I know that it’s not as clear cut as that! Isn’t providing fiscal stimulus widely considered an alternative solution?

GirlsBlouse17 · 19/02/2019 13:00

Unfortunately we had our chance at voting for a different election system in a referendum a few years ago so are unlikely to get another chance for a long while. If Lib dems were able to get elected, there would maybe be another chance, but that's not going to happen either

Smileasifyourheartisbreaking · 19/02/2019 13:01

I will never vote Tory. Ever. The ideology that led to austerity and the further degradation of the most vunerable in our society disgusts me

However my disgust for Corbyn's leadership of the party I loved is casting me into a political void

TalkinPeece · 19/02/2019 13:05

Kimbolton Fireworks have gone bust.
They did the displays for the Olympics.
Rev Lancaster (the boss) supported Brexit as he wanted much less red tape over explosives safety.

DGRossetti · 19/02/2019 13:11

Why do people who are not well off vote for hard right Tories - and Trump

Maybe a certain aspirational element to it ? Sort of the downstairs staff aping the upstairs gentry ?

Wasn't Alf Garnett famously Tory ?

I suspect Archie Bunker would be a fervent Trump supporter now.

67chevvyimpala · 19/02/2019 13:15

I will also never vote Tory.

Ever.

WorriedMutha · 19/02/2019 13:20

Jo Maugham QC just tweeted that they are launching a key Brexit case at 10 pm tonight so watch this space.

Butterymuffin · 19/02/2019 13:28

Derek Hatton was on Politics Live today saying he'd never been so excited about the future of the Labour party before. Hmm

Smileasifyourheartisbreaking · 19/02/2019 13:29

He's always been a self serving wretched human being

bellinisurge · 19/02/2019 13:29

Derek Hatton is an attention seeking prat who's activities in the 80s nearly killed off Labour.
