Brexit

Will you be disappointed if Brexit goes smoothly

Genuine question to the Preppers - how will you feel if Brexit goes through with no significant shortages or civil unrest? Will you heave a sigh of relief and sleep better at night, or feel a tiny bit flat and disappointed?

It's the slightly excited tone of some of the Prepper threads that has me wondering this. As if having a reason to hoard is fulfilling some squirrelesque instinct, which my be thwarted if the hoards prove unnecessary?

I'll be fucking delighted if it's anything other than an absolute shit show

TaimaandRanyasBestFriend · 13/02/2019 13:26

I’ve heard that the lorries are going to be waved through so they don’t need permits.

And I'm sure they will all be fine, upstanding people with lorries full of fresh food and meds for the populace, no one would ever dream of using such an opportunity to smuggle in people, drugs, tobacco or other contraband. I mean, I don't know why we bother with permits and checks now . . . oh, wait.

FishesaPlenty · 13/02/2019 13:35

It won't be any easier to smuggle 'people, drugs, tobacco or other contraband' after Brexit than it is now. It's just the full document checks which are being relaxed, not existing checks.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 13/02/2019 13:35

That's really helpful Fishes. Thank you.
This is why mn can be so valuable. Hidden amongst lots of speculation, there are people who know their stuff.

Obloodyhell · 13/02/2019 13:40

I never said that it was a good idea to waive the lorries through. But they will be, and the customs checks will be done retrospectively. This government is insane.

MrsBodger · 13/02/2019 13:48

Met up with a cop friend on Monday. She’s off to N Ireland in March for training in policing riots. Just in case.

No, you're wrong. It's not vehicle checks which will be carried out retrospectively, it's the full customs declaration and collection of any tax and import duty.

If they were planning on waving lorries through without any checks they wouldn't still be worrying about chartering extra ships for food imports would they?

AlphaJuno · 13/02/2019 14:03

No. Of course not. I'd be delighted if Brexit is the utopia the Beleavers believe it to be. Id love to be wrong about this and would admit if I was! I'm not really a 'preppier' but have been getting extra supplies in and always making sure I'm stocked up. It saves time and money. It will be needed because it's all stuff I'd use anyway and no doubt prices will go up regardless. Even if Brexit is amazing I'm going to carry on doing it. Because you never know what's round the corner, emergencies, bad weather, illness, extra person turning up for tea. Relieves stress for me. I started doing it when I was pregnant in preparation for the baby and it really helped, plus you can take advantage of offers.

icannotremember · 13/02/2019 14:11

Oh god, how weird do you have to be to think that people who are worried about Brexit will be disappointed if it goes well?!

BertrandRussell · 13/02/2019 14:13

I would be absolutely bloody delighted and happy to publically eat any humble pie anyone offers me.

Juells · 13/02/2019 14:25

Friends in the north west all voted leave even though their jobs could be affected.....they tell me Brexit is too important.

As the old saying goes, there's nowt so queer as folks. Whole communities in depressed areas that depend on one industry are proud of having voted to leave and losing that industry to an EU country. 🙄 And people make jokes about the Irish being stupid.

Helmetbymidnight · 13/02/2019 14:44

More exciting news for Brexitteers. Looks like Ford is leaving.

Do you still think it might go smoothly, Brexitteers?

lottielady · 13/02/2019 14:48

My DP was working in IT around the turn of the Millennium.

He laughs hollowly when people say ‘well, the Y2K bug was a load of fuss about nothing.’

We have a little stockpile in the garage.

redhat · 13/02/2019 15:28

My DF (who did actually vote remain but is 70 and gets most of his information from the blokes down the pub) has just insisted that the ford decision is nothing to do with Brexit. It's the diesel issue. Brexit isn't a factor at all Hmm

Inniu · 13/02/2019 17:21

Depends what people mean by “goes smoothly”. Smoothly for who.

Huge damage is being done already in Northern Ireland and Anglo Irish relations are hugely damaged.

The way Brexit is being handled by the UK government has probably already accelerated a United Ireland.

If anyone wants to buy powdered milk and multiples of baked beans and spam then more fool them.
I'd love to be a fly on the wall when they sit down to try and eat it for the fourth day in a rowGrin
I'll take my chances thank ye very much

Helmetbymidnight · 13/02/2019 17:38

eh? i think you can eat whatever you have in your cupboards whenever you like, no?

did you think that prepping means people are obliged to eat spam for four days in a row?

how funny.

TheCounter · 13/02/2019 17:42

My DP was working in IT around the turn of the Millennium.

He laughs hollowly when people say ‘well, the Y2K bug was a load of fuss about nothing.’

Why? What happened?

I worked for RBS at that time and they had whole IT depts working night-shift on Dec 31st 1999 and they all sat and waited... then performed various checks on data just hoping to find some sort of anomaly to justify their missing the biggest party for a thousand years and they found... Diddly squat!

ArmchairTraveller · 13/02/2019 17:49

Why would I buy spam and baked beans for my stores, TheCounter?
I don’t eat either of those things normally. I do, however, have stocks of tasty foods that we all enjoy.

FishesaPlenty · 13/02/2019 17:50

If it comes to a situation where they have to rely on what's in their cupboards for four days in a row I suspect they'll be more than happy to tuck in to their boring supplies while you're busy fighting your way into an empty supermarket.

I don't think it's really likely to come to that but who knows?

And if people can afford it then why shouldn't they buy their normal 6 months consumption of spam and beans in advance? It hurts nobody and it might leave some extra food in the shops for the people who don't bother stocking up.

Decormad38 · 13/02/2019 17:51

There’s no smooth Brexit. The whole debarcle is based upon lies and deceit.

Helmetbymidnight · 13/02/2019 17:52

what do you think the similarities between the situations are?

EssentialHummus · 13/02/2019 17:53

If anyone wants to buy powdered milk and multiples of baked beans and spam then more fool them.

Eh? We’ve got pasta, porridge oats, rice, lentils, tinned toms, sauce, jelly, custard, biscuits, coffee, tea, UHT milk (which we use ordinarily) and a few tins of soup and fruit - other than the final two, these are our staples.

TheElementsSong · 13/02/2019 17:54

eh? i think you can eat whatever you have in your cupboards whenever you like, no? did you think that prepping means people are obliged to eat spam for four days in a row?

Not in Leaver-land, apparently. In Leaver-land, negatively-minded Remoaners are killing Brexit fairies by the act of buying 3000 tins of sea urchins (instead of stuff they will actually use) and it will be compulsory to only eat the aforementioned sea urchins forever more.

Or maybe it's yet another one of those disingenuous inventions so popular with the Faith 🤔

TaimaandRanyasBestFriend · 13/02/2019 17:57

I've eaten it for longer than that by choice. I'm a long route hiker/backpacker. Spam is great on the trail - full of salt and fat, perfect after a day putting in 15-20+ miles on your feet with a big rucksack.

At any rate, anyone who thinks that is what prepping is about is ignorant about it all so best left to their own devices.
