Will you be disappointed if Brexit goes smoothly

Genuine question to the Preppers - how will you feel if Brexit goes through with no significant shortages or civil unrest? Will you heave a sigh of relief and sleep better at night, or feel a tiny bit flat and disappointed?

It's the slightly excited tone of some of the Prepper threads that has me wondering this. As if having a reason to hoard is fulfilling some squirrelesque instinct, which my be thwarted if the hoards prove unnecessary?

Most will be delighted if it goes smoothly. Most Brexit preppers are very concerned about food bank donations as people are holding onto the sort of stuff that they'd donate just in case their family needs it. If nothing happens then it will be brill but price rises are inevitable and it's the poor and vulnerable who lose out again.

FaultInMyStars · 12/02/2019 08:47

I will feel happy that I've been relieved of a few supermarket trips and summer expenditure - and hopefully will feel slightly less sick inside every day at what this once proud country is doing to itself.

TheWomanin12B · 12/02/2019 08:50

It's quite possible that there won't be any hugely noticeable effects in the days following, assuming the WA goes through.

The Brexits can crow about Project Fear again and will be oblivious to the slow decline. (We could still end up facing No Deal again in 2 yrs.)

Most of us who are prepping are worried about NO deal. The Govt are too.

Will you be disappointed if Brexit goes smoothly
goldengummybear · 12/02/2019 08:51

Y2K was well prepared for. Businesses and individuals need to know where we are heading (I suspect No Deal) so that the negative effects can be minimized as much as possible.

My stash means best case scenario, April spends on groceries is low.

SnuggyBuggy · 12/02/2019 08:56

I would just be relieved

Helmetbymidnight · 12/02/2019 08:57

sadly I don't think these can be controlled by hoarding relatively small amounts of food. And even if it could, I think the months of planning and discussion of hoards are about something other than keeping a bit of extra food in the house - it seems more like a hobby/interest?

Well, I'm not a prepper - the family eats faster than I buy - but I totally understand the need to try and protect and control what you can around you, given the Brexiteers in Govt are as ill-informed and clueless as most Brexit voters. We're heading towards extremely difficult times - we don't yet know how catastrophic they will be.

ContinuityError · 12/02/2019 09:26

Given that the CEO of the Food and Drink Federation is calling a disruptive no deal Brexit "the biggest threat businesses have faced since 1939”, I’ll be very relieved if it all goes swimmingly.

Whatthefoxgoingon · 12/02/2019 09:27

I’ll be extremely relieved if nothing changes and will make an extra large donation to the food bank. We can weather very large price increases in food (if that’s the only outcome), but the poor will really suffer and food bank donations will be needed more than ever.

bellinisurge · 12/02/2019 09:28

I can't fix the world but I can take steps to keep my family fed.

ComputerSaysMo · 12/02/2019 09:32

No, I’ll be relieved. And I won’t have to stock up on storecupboard essentials for a while, which would be fine (as any decent cook can tell you).

I have seen nothing to indicate things will be fine, though. If anything, the No Deal scenario is doubling down and getting worse every time I look at it.

Mistigri · 12/02/2019 10:12

The risks are very asymmetric.

Preppers risk having a stock of food they don't really need.

Non-preppers risk not having access to food they need.

It's up to individuals to decide whether the risks are large enough/ serious enough to justify preparation, but asking people if they will be "disappointed" is a bit like asking someone who's taken out insurance whether they will be disappointed if their house doesn't burn down.

Whatthefoxgoingon · 12/02/2019 10:15

Couldn’t agree more mistigri

Actually, this is the cheapest insurance policy I’ve ever taken out Grin

MerryMarigold · 12/02/2019 10:21

I'll be delighted if it still goes smoothly. Delighted in a way I would be if won the lottery. What's not to be happy about?

MerryMarigold · 12/02/2019 10:22

(My niece is a 10yo Type 1 diabetic. I'm not stockpiling food as I believe it's the least of our worries.)

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 12/02/2019 10:34

asking people if they will be "disappointed" is a bit like asking someone who's taken out insurance whether they will be disappointed if their house doesn't burn down.

I'm pleased it hasn't, but I must say I feel some pain when I think of all the insurance I've paid and never claimed on (compulsory terrorism supplement my arse).

I am not prepping to same extent as others.

But I will have full cupboards and lots of non perishables in. Only stuff I would normally have in anyway.

We do tend to shop for many things in a cash and carry so it’s common place for us to buy in bulk.

I am preparing for the inevitable price rises more than anything.

Why would I want to pay a lot more for a tin of tomatoes in April if I can buy them now at a cheaper price.

Random18 · 12/02/2019 11:13

But of course if we have a no deal Brexit I want it to go well. I don’t think it will and I think we are being unbelievably stupid as a country. But I am British and I have a young family so I do not wish for our life to get harder in any way

NameChanger22 · 12/02/2019 11:36

If you take out any kind of insurance then you are a prepper. The difference with food prepping is that you will definitely benefit from what you've paid in, and it's not money wasted.

Coppersulphate · 12/02/2019 11:38

I fully expect Brexit to go smoothly and will be delighted when it does.

PerverseConverse · 12/02/2019 11:46

@Coppersulphate how do you think things are going so far? Is it what you hoped for an expected?

Probable no deal?
Medicine shortages already reported
Companies struggling
Job losses
Financial losses
Friends and family members moving back to their "home" countries as no longer feel secure or welcome
Uncertainty amongst the general population
Uncertainty in business and finance
Increased racism
Armed forces on stand by for civil unrest
Car bomb in Derry
Probable hard border in Ireland leading to sectarian violence
Hospitals stockpiling
Army stockpiling
Parliament in crises
Etc

IDoN0tCare · 12/02/2019 12:08

Yes PerverseConverse Brexit is looking fucking marvellous, so far, isn’t it! 🙄

So far my child’s wonderful classroom assistant has moved back to France, as a direct result of Brexit. She was gutted, but said she couldn’t take the risk of waiting until the deadline as so many will be moving back and fighting for the same jobs.

I have lost a client already. So that’s the first financial effect on me. She’s translator, who has worked for the police and NHS for years, but so many have left that her work wasn’t enough to sustain her.

Well done for getting rid of those pesky, law breaking foreigners. I’m seeing the immediate improvement to my life, already, what with my child losing her classroom assistant and me losing a client. That’s filled me with so much confidence for the future. Hmm

PerverseConverse · 12/02/2019 12:46

IDoN0tCare it's just a 24/7 party atmosphere isn't it?!

IDoN0tCare · 12/02/2019 12:54

Absolutely PerverseConverse. You can feel the love coming off the ‘page’, every time someone starts discussing why are gathering up a pantry.

Maybe I should start a thread asking why so many seem to take it very personally that others are getting organised for Brexit? I honestly get the impression that they are really angry, but I can’t understand why. What we do affects them and their lives in no way, but of course, we’re the paranoid ones. Wink Grin

TaimaandRanyasBestFriend · 12/02/2019 13:00

I'm a prepper and over the years it's saved us tons of money! Having a stash has stopped us from wasting money on takeaways or being gouched during the Beast from the East last year. I have learned all kinds of useful tips that are great for life in a rural area.

I doubt Brexit will go smoothly, it will be terribly expensive for starters.

TheWomanin12B · 12/02/2019 13:04

Fucking stunning that people still expect Brexit to go well. Must be lovely up on Planet Brexit, being aware of absolutely fuck all.
