I'm so so interested to know why people are stock piling? What do you think is going to happen? (Literally no critism, genuine curiosity)

I make strawberry jam in the summer. We had so many strawberries from our patch last year. It was strawberry patch to jam in less than an hour!

I also make chilli jam with my homegrown chillies.

We should have red currents this year if my bushes survive after my neighbour didn't water them while we were away, despite saying she would, but no rhubarb until next year as I'm only getting my crowns from mum in April.

reallybadidea · 18/02/2019 22:19

Sounds like you won't starve in any event Grin

NoWordForFluffy · 19/02/2019 05:56

No. Even if what we eat is a touch random, we should be OK! 😂

SalrycLuxx · 19/02/2019 06:26

I’ve run out of my summer strawberry jam now. But only a couple of months and I’ll be able to visit the pick your own again.

Does this answer the question?
Apologies for Grauniad link. Or links generally.

I’m now awaiting the influx of “you’re all being silly” leaver posters, to come and say the retailers are just ‘panicking’ and ‘scaremongering’ unnecessarily.

But they’ve gone a bit quiet...

Uptheapplesandpears · 21/02/2019 08:20

They're probably all at the shops.

bellinisurge · 21/02/2019 08:39

They turned up last night on another thread.

Tanith · 21/02/2019 08:49

Well I, for one, am grateful I started prepping last year.

Last week, we were finally paid this term’s so-called “free” 30 hours entitlement. Most of our children qualify in one way or another, so that meant a sizeable chunk of our income was delayed for 6 weeks.

Thanks to bellinisurge, feeding everyone wasn’t a difficulty. I do have to start prepping again now, though.

bellinisurge · 21/02/2019 08:52

You are welcome @Tanith

BlackeyedGruesome · 21/02/2019 09:38

Ouch Tanith. That's a big hit to take.

Of course, an anonymous random poster who " worked for over 20 years in the industry." knows better than the heads of all these supermarkets and food chains Confused

I've "thought it through" and I'll believe the warnings of these major businesses over the Brexiter "They need us more ..."

Food retailers warn of higher prices and gaps on shelves in event of no-deal Brexit

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/business/2019/01/28/food-retailers-warn-higher-prices-gaps-shelves-event-no-deal/

The bosses of several major supermarkets and fast food chains have waded into the Brexit debate, warning of higher prices and gaps on shelves if the UK leaves the EU without a deal in March.

In a letter to MPs, the chief executives of Sainsbury’s, Asda and the UK arms of McDonald’s and KFC said
their “complex, just-in-time” supply chains would be “significantly disrupted in the event of no deal” as French officials impose customs checks in Calais < and the ports become logjammed >

The UK imports about a third of its food from the EU and even more during March, when many fruits and vegetables, including lettuce and tomatoes, are out of season, the letter says.

Some of Britain’s leading stores have warned that a no-deal Brexit will drive up food prices and pose a “significant” risk to the range of products on supermarket shelves

https://www.theneweuropean.co.uk/top-stories/top-retailers-warn-of-food-running-out-after-no-deal-brexit-1-5868922

Signatories to the retailers’ letter include Sainsbury’s, Asda, Marks & Spencer, the Co-Op, Lidl, Waitrose, Costcutter, KFC, McDonald’s and Pret A Manger as well as the British Retail Consortium.

They warned that the UK relies on Europe for almost one-third of its food, and that it will not be possible in a no-deal scenario to mitigate all risks to supply chains, many of which involve highly perishable goods.

BigChocFrenzy · 21/02/2019 10:16

If it ever comes to riots, I expect it will be those who see empty supermarket shelves

I live in Germany and suppliers are already organising alternative markets, same for Ireland too
Some crop supplies are expected to be lower this year anyway, because of the v hot summer that ran into October here.

BlackeyedGruesome · 21/02/2019 10:29

German suppliers will look after their own businesses as they have to make money to survive and pay their workers. That is going to leave British businesses with fewer suppliers. Not great for us, but we can not expect foreign businesses to get us out of the mess we have created by voting for Brexit without a sensible exit plan and all the infighting.
