What are you stock piling for?

I'm so so interested to know why people are stock piling? What do you think is going to happen? (Literally no critism, genuine curiosity)

I made Brexit Jam yesterday. Just wanted to share that with someone.

bellinisurge · 18/02/2019 14:55

As for "billion pound industry ", don't see that billion pounds (pounds????) being passed onto producers either.

bellinisurge · 18/02/2019 14:55

What fruit did you use?

TheSpamCounter · 18/02/2019 14:57

"As for "billion pound industry ", don't see that billion pounds (pounds????) being passed onto producers either"

Collectively it is for the government's concerned.

ArmchairTraveller · 18/02/2019 14:59

Oh, I’m looking forward to a long, lazy summer where I won’t have to shop much at all, as me and mine munch through my Brexit stash.

I’ll slurp Pimms, with home grown veg as I giggle about how foolish I was to be concerned at all, and thank goodness none of my stuff was actually needed.

Or not.

Either way, prepping means I have that choice.

TheSpamCounter · 18/02/2019 15:00

"So the whole Ramsgate dredging/Operation Stack +++/MoD forward purchasing is a fantasy , then"

I fail to grasp how that contradicts what I've said.

I'm stating that there will be no shortages because they will make it work.
Those are measures taken as part of the contingency??

Juells · 18/02/2019 15:00

It wouldn't take more than a few failed journeys for many of these small European producers to fall into the red.

It would take only one failed journey for these European producers to stop shipping to the UK, or increase their prices drastically. That's why people are stockpiling things that have to be shipped in.

Where did you hear that, Juells?

I saw it on Sky, and did a double-take. Two or three days ago, but I've googled and can't find anything.

bellinisurge · 18/02/2019 15:01

News flash- we only have the pound in the UK.

bellinisurge · 18/02/2019 15:02

How will they make it work?

StoorieHoose2 · 18/02/2019 15:06

is this what you saw Juells?

www.express.co.uk/news/politics/1088265/Brexit-latest-news-eu-food-aid-no-deal-brexit-eu-news

of course the Express sell it as 'project fear' natch

Juells · 18/02/2019 15:09

@twofingerstoEverything

Finally found something, a 'Project Fear' article from the Express
www.express.co.uk/news/politics/1088265/Brexit-latest-news-eu-food-aid-no-deal-brexit-eu-news

According to a source, officials said that in the event there are food shortages in Britain they would send supplies from the food mountains and wine lakes from Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) surpluses to supply British food banks.

The Commission has declined to comment on the report but has not denied the plans are being put in place when contacted by the Sunday Express.

Juells · 18/02/2019 15:11

of course the Express sell it as 'project fear' natch

Ha ha cross post, and snap!

TheSpamCounter · 18/02/2019 15:15

"It would take only one failed journey for these European producers to stop shipping to the UK, or increase their prices drastically. That's why people are stockpiling things that have to be shipped in."

Perhaps so. But then the problem is shared.
European producers/suppliers with excess stock and devastating losses.
And we all know what happens when the French farmers are not happy.
Therefore, it is in neither sides interest and diplomacy will prevail.

The Merkels and Macron will be making these choices.
And the words Emergency Measures will become quite prevalent in the months to come, regardless of Junker or Tusks wishes to teach us a lesson.

Juells · 18/02/2019 15:22

Perhaps so. But then the problem is shared.

I don't think you're getting the fact that I'm thinking about this from my point of view, not from the producers'. This conversation is about stocking up, you don't think that's necessary, so you want to explain to us exactly why it's not necessary. I don't care. I'm buying extra tins, and it doesn't matter how patiently you explain that it's totes not necessary, I'm still going to buy extra tins, extra rice, extra pasta, extra anchovies.

SalrycLuxx · 18/02/2019 15:23

because they will make it work.

Who in this scenario is ‘they’?

Have ‘they’ Given any indication of competence and actual project management ability thus far?

TheSpamCounter · 18/02/2019 15:25

"I don't think you're getting the fact that I'm thinking about this from my point of view, not from the producers'. This conversation is about stocking up, you don't think that's necessary, so you want to explain to us exactly why it's not necessary. I don't care"

Your choice.

Can lead a horse to water and all that...

Just though it was relevant, but since you think it's not I'll shut up.

Nampoo · 18/02/2019 15:26

personally I think it will all be fine but then I do my shopping at Costco so i'm unintentionally prepped all the time

bellinisurge · 18/02/2019 15:27

You seem to be of the "they need us more than we need them" school.
Yes, we are an important market. Yes, they will feel an impact if we crash out.
Which is why the Withdrawal Agreement exists as an offer.
And why weathering a storm with 26 mates is better than being BillyNoMates.
And it would be a storm which would affect people here directly. And one we are not sufficiently prepared for.

Biancadelrioisback · 18/02/2019 15:32

One of my biggest concerns is the price of fuel. If that goes up too much, along side the food going up, we won't be able to afford to travel to work. I can't really stock pile that though....

bellinisurge · 18/02/2019 15:37

Just make a habit of never being less than half a tank of petrol full. It's the best anyone can do. I strongly recommend against storing fuel any other way.

Roomba · 18/02/2019 16:17

I'm trying to stock up on food that we eat anyway, but keeps a long time. I struggle to afford to feed us all at the best of times so when prices go up I want to last as long as I can before having to pay more for stuff. If I can buy a bit more now, why would I want to wait and pay 30% more? Just common sense, surely?

NoraButty · 18/02/2019 18:32

Thanks for the source Juells

According to a source, officials said that in the event there are food shortages in Britain they would send supplies from the food mountains and wine lakes from Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) surpluses to supply British food banks.

They’ve made it sound so dreamily fairytale like Grin

I wonder what in reality the food mountains are?

I remember years ago there was a ‘butter mountain’ as some of it was stored not that far from where I lived. It was only butter though and when they gave it away it was rationed in some way.

BlackeyedGruesome · 18/02/2019 20:13

I think the supermarkets will work bloody hard to make it work as they need to sell us stuff to make a profit. What the cost will be and how quickly they can fix it and how panicked other people are in the mean time is not something I can guess so stocking up for a couple of weeks or so. I have autistic children that I need to provide for.

NoWordForFluffy · 18/02/2019 20:47

I made Brexit jam too as I needed the freezer space that 1.8kg of blackberries was taking up. 😂

reallybadidea · 18/02/2019 21:18

@NoWordForFluffy

So happy to find a fellow Brexit jam-maker! Mine was about 2kg each of blackcurrants, gooseberries and rhubarb. Don't even know how long it's been in the freezer but it tastes good Grin
