What are you stock piling for?

I'm so so interested to know why people are stock piling? What do you think is going to happen? (Literally no critism, genuine curiosity)

Cloudtree, I take cheese deadly seriously. I never thought to babybel my cheese! Will research :)

NameChanger22 · 12/02/2019 11:47

Price rises. They are inevitable.

Hedgehogblues · 12/02/2019 11:51

Short term supply line issues. If it doesn't happen it's all good. All the food I'm collecting I'll eat anyway

NoraButty · 12/02/2019 11:56

I’m getting in front with the shopping as a buffer mostly in case people start to panic buy. I just don’t fancy adding to that chaos.

Also, because of potential price rises. I’m making the most on offers on things I use regularly that have long shelf life.

I’ve done a little bit of stocking for things we use a lot that I’d not like to do without, certain spices, coffee, toiletries, Port!

The closer it gets to B day, the less I trust the general public not to start a panic. My fear is, once it starts it will be chaos.

SalrycLuxx · 12/02/2019 12:04

Short term supply issues and increased prices.

Bear In Mind that Holland thinks even a soft Brexit incorporating trade deals will knock 3% off their GDP. Then think what hard Brexit might do. Then think about how it will be far worse for the UK.

Aaahhhbump · 12/02/2019 12:11

Tinned/frozen fruit and veg.
I'm concerned that even if fresh make it in, that it won't make it this far north.
I think there will be food but malnutrition could be an issue.

MrsTerryPratcett · 16/02/2019 14:33

I think it's all pretty dramatic to be honest. I honestly don't know anyone doing this in real life. Just mumsnet.

First rule of prepping, you do not talk about prepping. We do here because it's anonymous. The only people I've mentioned it too IRL are my mum and dad, to check they have enough to tide them over.

Supply chains are made to work quickly and efficiently in a specific set of circumstances. Those circumstances are changing dramatically in the case of no deal. Therefore there might be supply chain issues. I don't really understand how people don't get that there could be issues. It's not Armageddon, but it could be a PITA or worse.

TalkinPeece · 16/02/2019 15:04

I am stockpiling so that when the supply chain breaks down at the end of March, I do not have to share the aisles with people who have had their heads in the sand for the last two years

Uptheapplesandpears · 17/02/2019 12:10

I'm stockpiling in case of disruption to supply chains. As I have small children I'm responsible for, I cannot afford to take a faith based approach to such matters.

ArmchairTraveller · 17/02/2019 12:16

I like having a full pantry and store cupboards. I blame my mother who often ran out of food and supplies due to being disorganised. Plus she hated cooking and I love it. Or perhaps I was overly influenced by Wind In The Willows and Badger.

redhat · 17/02/2019 17:30

I think lots more people are stockpiling now. Its been left too late for people to have confidence that anything will run smoothly.

Parker231 · 17/02/2019 19:50

I imagine that those who aren’t stock piling don’t understand how the food supply chain works and the just in time approach nowwe are facing a no deal exit.

I looked at the tins and packets in our pantry - very little comes from the UK.

frenchknitting · 18/02/2019 08:01

Last winter there was 3 days of snow here and all the local shops were completely out of lots of basics. It really made me think about what we would do if there was a longer spell of bad weather, or a brexit related disruption to the supply chain.

I'm stocking up my freezer, and getting some more tins in. Just good sense, IMO.

Juells · 18/02/2019 12:34

Good parmesan will have been maturing for 2.5years before it gets to you - a few more months sealed in a packet won't do it any harm.

I freeze parmesan - got fed up of it going mouldy in the fridge. I cut the block into 3 or 4 pieces, wrap in tinfoil, put the bits in a plastic bag and freeze.

The EU is planning to ship emergency supplies of food to UK post-Brexit though, so the basics should be available.

To quote David Brent, “If you can keep your head when all around you have lost theirs, then you probably haven't understood the seriousness of the situation."

TheSpamCounter · 18/02/2019 13:58

Loads of sausages, burgers and chicken wings. Bottles of bubbly, beer and wine.

Gonna be a celebration in my summer house. Let's hope the weather's decent.

Worked in logistics for regional distribution for a loooong time.
French perishables will be rejected if quality is sub standard just the same after 29th March as it is now.
Guess who which countries farmers will foot the bill for failed delivery?
French / Italian farmers and food producers.
Guess who's going to be running around like their pants are on fire?
French and Italian governments... When they all take to the streets

Juells · 18/02/2019 14:11

Think it through.

Where did you hear that, Juells?

TheSpamCounter · 18/02/2019 14:29

"Think it through"

I don't have to think it through.
I've worked for over 20 years in the industry.
It wouldn't take more than a few failed journeys for many of these small European producers to fall into the red.
QC standards are non negotiable. If its sub standard it gets rejected.
The supplier then has the additional cost of disposal at landfill (which can be more expensive than the load value. Esp if its dair/poultry) or a return journey with a full load of worthless produce.
Or they could just choose not to deliver but I doubt any of them have alternate European customers waiting to take excess stock at premium rates.
So what are the choices?
Let whole sections of the industry go under, or do what it takes to make it work.
My guess is the latter. Even if they have to wave them through with minimal checks.

bellinisurge · 18/02/2019 14:36

I know TheSpamCounter you think nothing is going to change and there are going to be no problems at all.
That's your thing. Based on how the situation is now. With no real pressures on supply and distribution. You also appear to believe that fresh food that isn't delivered immediately doesn't rot.

TheSpamCounter · 18/02/2019 14:49

"You also appear to believe that fresh food that isn't delivered immediately doesn't rot"

It's chilled. Minimal disruption is accounted for on long haul produce.
It may arrive an hour late. Or even miss its booking time for delivery and have to sit overnight. That doesn't mean that it's going to have a detrimental effect on quality.
It'll just get rotated within the RDC to get it out sooner, according to shelf life.
As much as it may surprise you, the supply chains within the food sector are making plans too to minimize possible disruption.

bellinisurge · 18/02/2019 14:51

I know it's chilled. How long does that last? I genuinely hope food retailers are making contingency plans and don't pass any losses onto consumers.

TheSpamCounter · 18/02/2019 14:51

BTW I'm not discounting the possibility that produce will be rejected, because it most likely will, but only If there are the significant delays that people seem to think will be allowed to occur.
Personally, I very much doubt it.
It's a billion pound industry.

bellinisurge · 18/02/2019 14:53

So the whole Ramsgate dredging/Operation Stack +++/MoD forward purchasing is a fantasy , then?
