Not because I'm keeping a list of who has food for when the shit hits the fan... Just because I'm a nosy bitch.

Here's mine - I started adding to it a few weeks ago. It's only me and almost 5yo DS I really have to worry about so I feel its almost there.

Tinned rhubarb is improved by adding a jar of unsweetened applesauce in a store cupboard crumble. I also have packets of ready made crumble topping because butter is already very expensive and likely to become even more so.
I also added two more rhubarb plants to the garden yesterday. Makes six in total and four will be good for this year.

PerverseConverse · 11/02/2019 22:29

I've just found a packet of Refreshers on the kitchen shelf that my son hadn't spotted so have added those to the treats stash along with a pack of kitkats. Waitrose delivery tomorrow which will provide a challenge of where to store things. I have a fairly large storage chest where I keep the old printer that needs chucking out and various games. I can redistribute those and store fruit juice, water, and flour in there along with anything else that will fit. I'll find places.
Dd1 has asked me to get a load of pot noodles. I'll get some and couscous as we both like those. Dd2 is fussy and doesn't but she can have beans on toast. They all love plain pasta, no sauce, just grated cheddar on top which I think is revolting. A few weeks of that most days might put them off that excuse for a dish for life

JiltedJohnsJulie · 11/02/2019 22:40

Sorry little I've had a glass of Wine

Are you stockpiling cats in the ottoman and keeping toilet rolls in the freezer? Are we about to have another hot summer? Grin

JiltedJohnsJulie · 11/02/2019 22:45

I'm still dubious about filling up the freezer as I can remember the electricity strikes. For those filling their freezer, have you got a plan in case the electricity goes off?

In the 70s one half of our city had electricity one night and the other half the next. We were better off than many as we had a gas cooker.

How are you planning to keep the freezer going if, god forbid, the electricity goes off?

I have an inverter and a car battery. You can buy inverters on Amazon to power a freezer.

They're fab for camping holidays

PerverseConverse · 11/02/2019 22:48

My freezer isn't very big so not relying on what's in there. I'll check my manufacturers booklet as it says in there how long food will stay frozen in the event of a power cut as long as the door remains closed. Think it's 12 hours but might be longer.

adds to list and wonders where the money is going to come from

BigChocFrenzy · 12/02/2019 01:11

We had power cuts in the early 1970s and we just kept the freezer & fridge closed
I think my mum covered both with blankets

Power cuts were always only a few hours until it came back again

We had to use candles & matches and we played draughts & cards by candlelight

You're up early @TheCounter . Or are you working in a different time zone? Or are you distracting yourself from a young child by firing out drivel. Hope you eventually get a good sleep.

Channel 5 news had an interesting piece last night about a no deal brexit. Instead of interviewing two people - one saying "there might be problems getting food into the country" and another saying "what rubbish of course there won't", they presented it all as factual information giving. They said medicines are now being stockpiled but not an infinite supply, there will be delays at the ports because of the processes that will need to be gone through, there will be food price rises. It was very interesting simply because its not the way we are used to seeing the news presented anymore.

bellinisurge · 12/02/2019 07:22

Yes, I love that stupid easily dissmissable bullshit is given the undeserved credit of an equal and opposite view.
"There won't be problems because I beLeave it" is not an opinion of equal value to "there will be problems because here are the pinch points where they would happen ".

EmmaGrundyForPM · 12/02/2019 07:48

I'm not a prepper as such (or at least dont consider myself as one) but ever since the fuel strikes years ago when I was stuck in a rural village with 2 small children I have always made sure we have enough to last us for a couple of weeks if necessary. We have a large (7ft) cupboard in the garage and half of it is taken up with spare food.

I've not been very consistent about it, but in the last few weeks I have found myself adding to the stash. I am conscious that although there are loads of tins, rice, pasta etc there isnt any meat other than tuna. And the veg is mainly tinned tomaties and sweetcorn. Maybe I need to think about ensuring that there is enough stuff to produce balanced meals.

I tend to buy 18 toilet rolls at a time but don't have spares. Ie we run it down until were down to 2 or 3 then buy more. So i might try to but extra.

The one thing i don't have is tinned fruit as we dont really eat it. I'm only buying stuff that we will eventually eat/use.

hugoagogo · 12/02/2019 08:15

I wish I had a pantry.

Hate to tell you but this makes you a prepper in UK terms.. Wink Grin I agree though, I wouldn't call myself a prepper really. I bulk buy things when on offer and always have very full cupboards. I'm more of a long term girl guide/brownie who has never lost the "be prepared" instinct.

bellinisurge · 12/02/2019 09:04

@hugoagogo you don't have to "have a pantry" to have a pantry. I prefer the word "pantry " to stockpile because it is less "alien" and more appropriate to your home. But it's just a word. I don't have a pantry either. Not a physical room. But I have a pantry of supplies.

waffleblanket · 12/02/2019 11:47

Where I live there are regular electricity cuts in certain weather conditions. Your freezer should be ok for 24 hours if it's under 5 degrees. Fridge is ok for 4 hours under 5 degrees.

We have a bbq with gas bottle, loads of big hanging torches, packets of baby wipes (nothing like no shower in cold weather), and always make sure the car has petrol for charging phones. We also have portable chargers. I've got a number of big thermos'. If I know a cut is likely I heat up food and boiling water and chuck them in there, makes life easier to know you can have a meal or a cup of tea in a few hours.

PerverseConverse · 12/02/2019 12:18

My treats stash is looking good!

Just had a Waitrose delivery and need to find homes for lots of things. Behind the sofa is out as the pipes run along the wall cavity so gets warm.

FriarTuck · 12/02/2019 13:06

If you have a gas hob consider getting a kettle that can go on top of it - easier than boiling a pan of water for a cup of tea. I got one off Amazon for just under £9.

PrawnOfCreation · 12/02/2019 17:54

Once I've finished with tinned meat and filled the freezer I'll be starting a treat stash. It'll be a treat just to do after months of spreadsheets, meal plans, and boring nutrition stuff.

Chocolate
Pop
Wine
Beer
Cider
Jelly sweets
Nuts

Gonna be a bugger hiding it...

JiltedJohnsJulie · 12/02/2019 18:14

I can remember now why the fridge wasn't a problem in the 70s strikes, we had a gas fridge! Grin

Murinae · 12/02/2019 19:28

Trouble is my gas cooker won’t start when the electric is off. It doesn’t release the gas flow until the lid is fully up and the clock is set (doesn’t have to be the right time). I know this as we have lots of power cuts around here

bellinisurge · 12/02/2019 19:38

Do you have a barbecue and a place outside to use it? And a big umbrella?
Not joking. In the very unlikely event of power problems to do with Brexit, this might be an option.

Howdoidothis4eva · 12/02/2019 20:17

@SpunBodgeSquarepants, atm they're in the hallway whilst I make space. Grin

I've always kept a large supply of food, etc, in; I can't always get out and I feel better when my cupboards are full, and it means I've enough to last during those times I'm stuck inside.

I've got lots of different types of flour, including type 00, wholemeal, malted flakes, strong white, plain, self raising and 3 other speciality flours. Most of those I've only got 3kgs of each, but I've 25kgs strong white, 5kg plain and 5kg self raising.
I've about 4kg each of sultanas, dates, ground almonds, chocolate, and mixed dried fruit.
1kg sesame seeds, 1kg fried onions, dried.
3kgs each of red lentils, pearl barley, yellow split peas. 4kg green split peas.
1kg green lentils. 1kg instant mash.
1kg polenta, 1kg fine semolina, 1kg coarse semolina.
8 tubes tomato puree, 2 tubes garlic puree.
2 jars red pesto, 2 jars green pesto.
30 tins tuna in oil

8 tins new potatoes, 10 tins mushy peas, 4 tins mushrooms, 8 tins baby carrots.
4 tins butter beans, 4 tins haricot beans, 4 tins mixed beans, 10 tins kidney beans.
10kg pasta, 10kg basmati rice, 4kg cous cous.
10 jars pasta sauce, 5 jars passata, 20 jars Indian/Asian/Mexican/British sauces.
Various pickles, spices, herbs and sauces, 2kg table salt, 500g peppercorns.
10 packets biscuits, 1 box sweets,

20 rolls kitchen paper, 8 jars gravy powder.
15 boxes various cereals, 10 bags porridge oats. 8 boxes cup-a-soup.

5-10 each of toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, bubble bath.

Also have a camping hob ring and 5 spare canisters, plus wind up lanterns and about 50 candles and 8 large boxes of matches as we live in an area that gets a lot of power cuts.

BlackeyedGruesome · 12/02/2019 21:04

Bloody hell where is all that lot getting stored?

I am getting ready to stash the latest lot of shopping.

Now got olive oil and 4 bottles of vegetable oil.

Still not got sweets for the children, increased the stock of juice to four each of apple orange and pineapple. Got the last of the tinned tomatoes that I can possibly fit in the flat. More of DD's milk. And some cup shots in case we just have hot water.
