Not because I'm keeping a list of who has food for when the shit hits the fan... Just because I'm a nosy bitch.

Here's mine - I started adding to it a few weeks ago. It's only me and almost 5yo DS I really have to worry about so I feel its almost there.

@IDoN0tCare , when my Mum first came over to work in the new NHS, her friends (if they could afford to go back home ) would return with bacon and butter.
I wish a charming late 1940s anecdote was just that. And not something for 2019.

Grinchly · 18/02/2019 17:50

bellini My great aunt took in two Irish girls during the war. They worked in the mills and sent money back. They brought butter and bacon over too Smile

IDoN0tCare · 18/02/2019 17:51

I always take potatoe bread with me, to the wee lad. 🤣

AutumnCrow · 18/02/2019 18:03

I love making potato cakes. Might come in handy in March.

ConorMcGregorsChin · 18/02/2019 19:55

Just wanted to say, love this thread and been making notes for weeks. Prepping and adding all the time. Some great reminders and tips I've picked up too.
I'm a single parent with primary school age DD. I've got pantry full. Plus a 2nd pantry full (I tidied cupboards out to make space for this which was something I needed to do anyway and feel good ahout). Plus 4 boxes full of long life / tinned veg, soups, meats and pulses / beans.
Also have 24 loo rolls and stockpiled meds. Recrntly bought a new large fridge freezer as old one broke down. This has been filled to capacity. All mainly yellow sticker stuff which will easily last 3 months.

Can't believe people are dismissing this or assuming all will be ok when the whole thing has been a shambles so far (Brexit that is)
As you've all said before, not a bad thing to be prepared in case of illness or bad weather anyway and it won't go to waste.
I'm not on a great salary, but can honestly say it's not cost me much extra per week so build up stocks. It's actually made me more cost aware and been amazed at how much I've saved by shopping at Aldi (I've probably ended up getting twice as much as I usually get for same price)

Win win. Smile

Me to DH: oooh potato cakes, how do I make potato cakes
DH: Use the internet
Me: Not potatoes?

AutumnCrow · 18/02/2019 20:14

😀

It's a proper prepper food - mash, flour, salt and pepper, and fry in oil or fat or butter.

You can add all sorts of bits and scraps, like chopped onions, leeks, bacon, anything really.

I'm thinking about melding them with leftover rissoles, themselves full of scraps, to make a whole new prepper superfood, the Brexit Rissole Cake of Doom. Best eaten when just back from the pub.

Murinae · 18/02/2019 20:15

My grandad always used to make us potato cakes. Not had them for years. Seem to remember mashed potatoes and flour and then baked in the oven and served with butter on top

Murinae · 18/02/2019 20:18

Not sure if he put an egg in or not. Will have to ask my sister

AutumnCrow · 18/02/2019 20:27

Yes lots of people put an egg in the mixture.

NoWordForFluffy · 18/02/2019 20:42

I've just ordered another stockpile shop from Ocado as they emailed me a £15 off voucher. I know they have dubious ideas, but I've managed to save a fair bit of money doing it.

I remembered jam sugar this time as we have a massive strawberry patch which I convert into a fair amount of jam over the summer (I've also ordered 12 Sweet Colossus plants to add to my haul). It's quite baking-heavy this time. I've ordered a set of 3 loaf tins from eBay too, one of which fits a standard size loaf, which I'll try this weekend.

The kids keep going under the bed and inspecting the stash. It's rather funny really!

HeronLanyon · 18/02/2019 21:18

Clearing my recently departed lovely old ma’s kitchen I brought back a few of her very well worn bread tins and baking trays. As a life long bread baker she would approve of my stash of baking stuff. I too need to try this weekend as I haven’t made bread for a few years.

bellinisurge · 18/02/2019 21:28

It'll taste extra good

HeronLanyon · 18/02/2019 22:12

Yes! May go low on salt as there may be some tears Smile

BlackeyedGruesome · 19/02/2019 00:00

Can I ask for advice? (Haven't RTFT So apologies if already addressed)

I live in a small flat. I don't really know what to stockpile. I've read somewhere here to stockpile what you already eat, for us that is things like stew, casserole, cottage pie. I don't have a large freezer to store lots of prepared meals, at the moment it's full of chips, jacket potatoes, frozen veg, bread. I'm presuming no one thinks we're going to be without power to cook and for fridges etc? So am I going to be ok if I squeeze a couple of packs of mince in my freezer? I've a pack of 60 toilet rolls in the cupboard, will try and make sure plenty are left, I'll get extra shampoo and shower gel just in case. I have long life milk in the cupboard and always have plenty of tea and coffee in. What else do I need?

Should I really be trying to stockpile medication? I take thyroid medication daily so can't run out.

bellinisurge · 19/02/2019 05:40

The best thing to do about medication is speak to your doctor and the pharmacist you normally use for prescriptions. If you put yourself and this issue on their radar, so to speak, and make them give you their word that it has been considered, that is a positive step.
As for what to store, if there is a particular foodstuff that is your "go to", then get that. Including any treat if that works for you. Not a home ful. Just an extra. No one can prepare food supplies for every scenario and an unlimited time period.

HeronLanyon · 19/02/2019 06:20

batsy I too currently live in a very small flat. I ‘found’ space over kitchen cabinets and a suitcase. bought 4 square storage cubes with lids for stash. Mix of toiletries and tins of pulses, pasta and some fruit. Coffee baking stuff almond milk porridge. My earliest and most central box is those things I think might really be disrupted for a bit - spices, olives, garlic ginger paste, capers. My small fridge freezer has frozen lemon juice cubes lime wedges butter and cheese and fruit compotes. No room for more but feels good to have a few weeks stuff. In case. Finding loo roll is the real space stealer !

bellinisurge · 19/02/2019 06:25

And squash loo rolls down. No point storing the holes in the centre of rolls.

borntobequiet · 19/02/2019 06:36

Squashing loo rolls is genius! I sense a functional maths question coming on (I teach it).

redhat · 19/02/2019 07:40

Re medication some are trying to get each prescription a couple of days early and also missing a couple of doses where that is possible. Dh has managed to stock up on his this way but he started in July. He can’t walk without it so it’s crucial for him.

Re meals like shepherds pies, stews etc I would be buying a few tins of bolognese mince, some tinned peas and carrots and some instant mash. You can make a perfectly acceptable shepherds pie type dish from that. Likewise tins of chicken in sauce a little stock plus some tinned veg and some dumpling mix will make a chicken stew. All store cupboard stuff.

redhat · 19/02/2019 07:43

In terms of space remember this doesn't need to look pretty. PIL puzzled me at the weekend trying to tell me they didn't have space. they live in a four bedroomed detached house! What they meant was there is not much room in the kitchen cupboards but the stuff doesn't need to live in the kitchen. Much of mine is in a box sitting on the landing.

redhat · 19/02/2019 07:47

batsy I would also use up the jacket potatoes in your freezer and then make use of that space to store more meat. Potatoes store perfectly well in a bag and can be cooked in five minutes in a microwave. A couple of bags of rice or pasta are a good carb substitute for potatoes and will last for years.

BlackeyedGruesome · 19/02/2019 08:35

Under the bed? cleaning things next to the loo? Down the side of furniture? Bottom of the wardrobe. Top of wardrobe, behind books on the bookshelf, top of bookshelf, you only need to put a couple of things in different places to start to build a stash. Behind sofa has been recommended on here too. Is there any space next to the washing machine , back of wardrobe, under a table or desk?

NoWordForFluffy · 19/02/2019 08:39

We have a king size bed with Brexit storage underneath. It's an otherwise unused space!
