Not because I'm keeping a list of who has food for when the shit hits the fan... Just because I'm a nosy bitch.

Here's mine - I started adding to it a few weeks ago. It's only me and almost 5yo DS I really have to worry about so I feel its almost there.

I'm not stocking for Brexit particularly. I'm still stocking against bad weather conditions. I will be driving to Lidls for soup, pickles etc. I used to live up a farm track in an area where electricity went off frequently ... ended up cooking on a woodburner for several weeks. The shops I now could walk to are very small and would run out, and the supermarkets are miles away. And I've just sown some winter salad in a small tray so at least i have cut and come again on a window ledge to keep me happy!

1 box olive spread about 90p Aldi
1 jar jam

Coffee or tea bags????
1box uht milk or coffee mate

Still working on lunches and tea.

Puddings:
1 tin pineapple 69p Aldi
2tins peaches in light syrup,33p each Asda
2tibs rice pudding at 30p each Asda. ( With sultanas)

NoWordForFluffy · 14/02/2019 22:07

Home Bargains have a dairy free spread for 59p. I bought one to try on the kids as they can only have limited dairy. It's half the price of Vitalite, so we'll see!

A litre of UHT cows' milk is 55p in Aldi. I've been in there tonight. They have bread flour for 59p per 1.5kg bag and yeast sachets at 59p (I think; maybe I'm just repeating prices!) for 8.

100% peanut, peanut butter is £1.25 for 280g, which is a great price.

I have a shit ton of homemade strawberry, blackberry and chilli jam, so won't be running out of that!

Farmfoods does 2 x 240 PG Tips for £7.00, which is about the best price you'll find.

Aldi frozen berries are £1.49 for the same sizes packs which are 50% more elsewhere.

Today's efforts:
Got the specific squash they will drink from Sainsbury's, larger trainers for Ds. And clothing in his favourite colour. And tinned carrots.

I have started my Christmas food shop. (Long dated crackers)

Bought a pack of tins of coke to have as a treat which can be rationed out or caffeine fix and a couple more tins of Pringles as they have such a long date.

Tried the mug shots. DD liked them, ds turned up his nose at them. Will get some for DD and me in the event of only having access to hot water.

Discovered that 8 bottles of squash in a bag for life holds them together for standing on the floor in the alternative pantry.

Been stocking up one of my storage places tonight with some of the stuff I bought today. I aim to get three days of dried/ tinned food in there.

I have cleared out another storage space and will fill that with a variety of things as well, having put the first things in there. I will need a lot more milk.

I have cleared out the top drawer of the freezer and will have room for more veggies in there. Mainly sweetcorn and peas but also peppers and onions.

I know I'm end up bailing people out if it hits the fan. I think that's why I've over-prepared

You see, I don’t mind helping out some of my vulnerable friends, but I will be really pissed of at people that have the finances to do as I have, but prefer to ‘see how it goes’. I’m regretting telling those people what I’ve been doing, as I know they’ll be scrounging off me, because they won’t want to pay the higher prices, elbow through the panic shoppers or can’t get what they want. I’ve actually done a ‘public’, ie more obvious, larder and stashed at least 75% in hidden areas. I’m lucky that, due to doing my own kitchen and other rooms, I have discreet storage areas in the house. I will not be letting ANYONE, other than my adult children, know where they are.

IDoN0tCare · 15/02/2019 00:09

I used to grow veg in big pots and I think I’ll get a few packets of seeds in too. Spinach is really easy to grow in a pot and the more you pick, the better it grows. You can use it for salads, stirfrys or potato and leek soup. I’m going to have a go at growing a few easier veg.

Brexit has also brought home to me that I waste too much money and haven’t saved as much as I should, for any emergencies. I need to go back to the days of a being a bit more self sufficient. I used to really enjoy growing my own veg, so I’m looking forward to that.

I do think all you preppers will be very sad if Brexit comes and goes and your stores are of no use.

Ivegotthree · 15/02/2019 00:21

@redhat
@hamsterdance

Or just eat the cat. At least you won't have to stockpile cat food and cat litter that way

IDoN0tCare · 15/02/2019 00:26

I do think all you preppers will be very sad if Brexit comes and goes and your stores are of no use.

You just keep telling yourself that, if it makes you feel better. Many parents on here, have family members that rely on life saving or essential medicines, so we are worried shitless about the provision of those meds.
Do you seriously think we want brexit is shit?
Do you seriously think we’ll be delighted when prices for goods go up, while wages stay the same and benefits get cut?
Do you seriously think I’m delighted that my middle child is already talking about emigrating, as his job may be affected?

If you think Brexit is going to be issue free, then great. I prefer to hope for the best, but am insuring against a worse case situation. What exactly is wrong with that? No one is buying food that they won’t eat. If everything goes well, the food will still be eaten.

IDoN0tCare · 15/02/2019 00:27

Brexit to be shit?

BlackeyedGruesome · 15/02/2019 00:35

Will be bloody relieved if it all goes through quietly and we can gradually consume the stash.

PreppaPig · 15/02/2019 01:33

Can I make a suggestion that you think about adding some bottled water? (I know some people have already!)

You're probably thinking "why water?" because we all take it for granted that we turn on the tap and we get fresh, clean water, but think about how it gets there.

I work in the water industry. Possible things that could go wrong in a worst case no deal scenario:

The chemicals required for the water treatment plant do not get here.
Power supply issues meaning plants and pumping stations shut down.
See also possible cyber critical infrastructure attacks.

If things are that bad and there is no food in the shops, no petrol reaching fuel stations, how are water treatment plant operators going to get to work? No operators means the plants shut down.

I think it's unlikely that the water supply will be affected, but it's not impossible, therefore I suggest everyone gets in some water. Most people suggest around 2litres per person per day. You can get bottles of spring water in the supermarkets for about 17p.

It's a lot of water to store though. Perhaps think about some water purification tablets as well. These are not very expensive.

I'veGotThree - I'll be fucking relieved if Brexit happens and all is ok! I'm currently worrying if my child is going to have access to their medication that they need to stay alive! So while you snipe away thinking you are oh so clever, just remember there are people up and down this country right now, genuinely fearful for their children's lives. Angry

And why the fuck would my stores be of no use?!

redhat · 15/02/2019 06:47

Nobody will eat pasta or rice in the wonderful elysian fields of brexit world. We will be dining on ambrosia nectar (not ambrosia rice). As such all stockpiled foods will immediately turn to fairy dust...

WheelyCote · 15/02/2019 07:25

Ok I'm definately convinced to start buying more to stockpile a little

How far ahead do we store food for???

1 month, 2, 3??

NopeNi · 15/02/2019 07:30

As long as you want. If you can afford it and will eat it anyway, you're just buying it ahead of time while it's cheaper.

No one really knows if/when/how long there could be food disruption for but a few months of staples seems sensible to me.

bellinisurge · 15/02/2019 07:37

Agree with @NopeNi

Uptheapplesandpears · 15/02/2019 07:42

I do think all you preppers will be very sad if Brexit comes and goes and your stores are of no use.

Do you think the food will suddenly stop being edible on 29th March or something?

SparklySneakers · 15/02/2019 08:22

Mum said she'd never heard her friend laugh so hard when she asked her if she was getting extra food in due to possible shortages.

I'm upping my game now. I've not got much money until next week but will then add significantly to my stash.

It's such a worry. I keep hoping for sanity to prevail.

gamerchick · 15/02/2019 08:27

Ivegotthree

I do think all you preppers will be very sad if Brexit comes and goes and your stores are of no use

What does that even mean? Is Brexit going to take away our ability to eat, will it all turn bad at the stroke of midnight? Hmm

bellinisurge · 15/02/2019 08:33

"All you Preppers"😂😂😂 So much for building consensus and bringing everyone with you on this reckless unplanned journey .
Some people are still thinking of this as a political act of treachery. Fucking ridiculous.

FriarTuck · 15/02/2019 08:49

You can always buy plastic water containers and fill them with tap water - leave them in the garage or even outside. You might not want to drink them then but you'd not be wasting bottled water for flushing your toilet, washing yourself etc. I've done it because on the odd occasion when the water goes off I like to know I can still go to the loo & wash my hair over the sink etc. It seems like common sense these days to have some spare water.

SpunBodgeSquarepants · 15/02/2019 08:59

You lot have got me all worried about my allotment in the worst case scenario that people have to resort to stealing food.

OP posts:
NopeNi · 15/02/2019 09:09

That wouldn't be for some time IMO, if it happened at all. You'd have some warning - we'd have been past people looting shops and so on I think for them to be looking for and brazenly digging up allotments!

TheElementsSong · 15/02/2019 09:21

Some people are still thinking of this as a political act of treachery

It's that bizarre trope of "negative thinking is what kills Brexit fairies" - that's why it's considered treachery.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 15/02/2019 10:24

Surely it is better to use water purification tablets rather than buying lots of bottles of water? It seems unlikely to me that we won't have water at all, it just might need boiling or purifying before we drink it.

Water butts for flushing loos.

Don't start storing tap water at this point unless you want green slimy water.
