It's oh so quiet // It's oh so still // You're all alone // And so peaceful until

You ring the news // Bim bam // You shout and you yell // Hi ho ho // You broke the spell // Gee, this is swell you almost have a fit // Brexit is fab and I got hit // There's no mistake get on with it

'Til it's over and then // It's nice and quiet //
Shh shh // But soon again // Shh shh // Uh oh let's start a big riot

You blow a fuse // Zing boom // The devil cuts loose // Zing boom // What's the use
Wow bam // Of leaving the EU

It's gone quiet.

May was supposed to go on a tour of the EU to get concessions. She hasn't.

Instead we are currently stuck in an internal never ending debate about Alternative Arrangements (which is being abbreved too A. A. by less convinced souls) and how Germany got all the money from Marshall Aid (it didn't) and how navy ships can suddenly sprout front opening hulls to become roll on roll off ferries to emulate the spirit of Dunkirk. One of our greatest ever military defeats, which merely had good PR.

The idea that there is going to be any shift in position between now and 14th Feb seems unlikely. It suits the EU and it suits the ERG to be blunt about it. It does not suit the UK national interest though.

Instead our livihoods and futures are slowly drip, drip, dripping away. Invisible to those loved up on the idea of Leaving. But like a newly wed, how long does that feeling last? 42% of British marriages end in divorce after all. When do people fall out of love with Brexit?

The revelation of the need for the WAIB is scary too. The WAIB is the Withdrawal Agreement Implementation Bill. You can read more about it here:
threadreaderapp.com/thread/1091734003265224708.html
Well I say you can read about it, but from the thread you can see that the WAIB hasn't been published yet. And for us to Brexit without a legal and constitutional nightmare parliament needs to pass both the WA And the WAIB. And if you thought it was difficult to get the WA through just wait until you clap eyes on the WAIB details.

With this in mind there are noises from the ERG about an A50 extension. Y'know the one we can't have unless the EU think it's it their interests too.

mlexmarketinsight.com/insights-center/editors-picks/brexit/europe/the-uk-rips-out-its-eu-law-drip,-only-to-hook-up-to-another
More on the WAIB.

Of course there is a more sinister explanation: May does indeed intend to no deal and or use civil contingency law to pass the WAIB in whatever form she sees fit without parliamentary scrutiny.

Tick, tick, tick.

A friend told me today not to worry about brexit as "we survived before and we'll survive again". I didn't say much. My history lessons were rather grimmer in reminding me, that the ones who didn't survive don't get to be so optimistic.

Sam Coates Timess@SamCoatesTimes*

Cabinet...

Meanwhile Michael Gove suggested there shd be TV and internet bulletins about No Deal every day

And Amber Rudd told cabinet the gvt is negotiating with its MPs as well as EU and they need to see dangers of No Deal to make them vote for brexit deal

.........

5pm

Cabinet readout

  • May told colleagues to stop talking about delaying brexit as it was counterproductive
  • Rudd Hancock Gove & Hinds suggested spelling out why no deal would be damaging
  • Rudd said gvt had to be “straight with British ppl”
1tisILeClerc · 05/02/2019 21:23

Of course the ministers in Europe who are involved with Brexit will be seeing all this gross stupidity.

BigChocFrenzy · 05/02/2019 21:24

Bloody hell, after Boris Johnson screwing up Nazanin's chances
now another incompetent minister endangering a British citizen

This govt reaches depths no predecessor went near ....
but their Brexit cockup is so huge and overwhelming it crowds out the limited bandwidth for non-sleb news

RedToothBrush · 05/02/2019 21:27

BigChoc you should see the twitter exchange between Ben Wallace and BBC journalist John Simpson over the weekend. It only serves to make the story worse. John Simpson was irrate over MPs who know nothing of the world and causing damage because of it. Wallace defended ignorance and lying. It makes my blood boil.

I think bulletins are an idea to consider as people still aren't taking no deal seriously. Has gove had a good idea?!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 05/02/2019 21:30

To be fair, I'm not convinced by Calais plans...."Mr Puissesseau had insisted before hand that a “traffic light” system would work and keep traffic between Dover and Calais running smoothly.

The system consists of green for lorries with the right paperwork, orange for those who are not sure and red for those with no paperwork."

Especially if we are going to wave everything through with no paperwork. Red means go?

RedToothBrush · 05/02/2019 21:32

"We interrupt The Voice / The Greatest Dancer / Eastenders / Coronation Street to give you a bullet on the benefits of No Deal. There are none. And we will interrupt your telly every night until you take the hint."

{I think bulletins are an idea to consider as people still aren't taking no deal seriously. Has gove had a good idea?!}
The trouble is that it is all 'project Fear'. The boat of 'sensibleness' has not only sailed but sunk just over the horizon.

1tisILeClerc · 05/02/2019 21:35

Although Mr Puissesseau may be more than a bit optimistic in how well things might work, he is at least doing something.

RedToothBrush · 05/02/2019 21:35

Has gove had a good idea?!

Gove has been in the 'fairly sane' and 'having not had ideas' camps for a while.

Of course this is relative and I still don't like or trust the creepy fucker, but he genuinely seems doing better work than 80% of the rest of the Cabinet atm.

This terrifies me.

This terrifies me.

Well if Gove is 80% better than the rest then we really are playing Limbo how low can you go?

BigChocFrenzy · 05/02/2019 21:47

Message from the EU to Maybot ?

Nick Gutteridge@nick_gutteridge

Brussels positively buzzing with excitement over PM's visit on Thurs. 😂

EU official says: 'She's come 6 times already. We want to be helpful so we're seeing her a 7th.'

A diplomat adds: 'It's for domestic consumption.'
Their overwhelming enthusiasm is well shared by the press pack.

Destiel · 05/02/2019 21:50

Gove as the voice of reason???

Christ, we a truly fucked then

BigChocFrenzy · 05/02/2019 21:52

I'm still pretty sure the EU would extend until 1 June, just to show willing and to give themselves more prep time for No Deal.
However....

Nick Gutteridge@nick_gutteridge

EU official on Article 50 extension:

'If you want to do it for a few weeks you have to provide a good reason,
not just say it's because we don't agree on what we want.

If you want to prolong beyond that it's very difficult because we'd have to hold EU Parliament elections in UK.'

TalkinPeece · 05/02/2019 21:56

Extending is utterly pointless as the UK still cannot agree what its asking for.

LittleSpace · 05/02/2019 21:56

Leave voters will think anything is Project Fear so will only believe announcements from people like Gove, Boris or Rees-Mogg.

Maybe it is time for them to step up and take responsibility for the mess. Or maybe unicorns will fly.

BigChocFrenzy · 05/02/2019 22:03

Nick Boles MP@NickBoles

As predicted ERG hardliners are getting ready to reject any new deal that the PM might secure.
So on 14 Feb we will be back where we started but 2 weeks closer to their real goal which is a no-deal Brexit.

TalkinPeece · 05/02/2019 22:04

DH reckons the coverage on Venezuela right now on ITN is prepping us for the UK scenes after no deal Grin

nuttynutjob · 05/02/2019 22:05

Gove, the next Tory leader? Probably the next PM? Scary thought

mybrainhurtsalot · 05/02/2019 22:05

I thought that MEP idea posted upthread was great:

The letter asks EU leaders to offer Britain a 3-month extension so that a new referendum can be held on 23 May, the day of the European elections.

Crucially, the campaigners also call on the Labour party to sign off the Withdrawal Agreement but only once the extension of three months has been granted and the referendum has been agreed and the legislation passed to secure it.

If there were an election on 23 May, and Britain voted to stay, Article 50 would be revoked, the Withdrawal Agreement would be null and void and British MEPs could take up their seats in the new European parliament on 2 July.

If Britain voted to leave , it would do so on the terms of the Withdrawal Agreement - member states would add extra MEPs to replace the British ones based on the pre-agreed formula.

Hear scheduled ERG trip to Northern Ireland tomorrow is off following PM visit there today... more talks needed with Steve Barclay in London apparently

Hazards · 05/02/2019 22:06

Better yet the bulletins are from everyone but conservatives, SNP, lib dems, labour, greens, etc. Show a united front against Tories over no deal. It's not legally binding, we know they don't like legally binding.

It would help DP, he's pro med and food stockpiling (I've not mentioned wind up radio or water) into going along with my more extreme emergency plans.

RedToothBrush · 05/02/2019 22:07

I can hear cheers already...
