We could be waiting a long time, but that's what we have to wait for as that's what the EU is waiting for.

The EU has requested we expand on our plans for 'alternative arrangements' with regard to the backstop.

We need to do so before the next HoC vote on 14th Feb. The EU see no point in shifting their position before than. And the UK will struggle to provide the info the EU want before then. So there is now some doubt as to whether the vote will go ahead as planned.

About a third of the Cabinet now believe that Brexit will have to be delayed due to legislation not being ready for exit date. However we don't have power over this and we might still exit without it.

There is no Brexit related business next week in the HoC to prevent pesky amendments. The recess has been cancelled but MPs have been told its OK to go on their ski holidays so it's just a PR stunt.

Meanwhile No Deal is in full effect as businesses trigger their exit strategy in the absence of certainty. No Deal is reality for many even if we do have a last minute deal...

We are all about to get poorer. As that's what we voted for.

susan

What the hell is that petition about. The level of delusion is truely breathtaking.

Spudlet · 03/02/2019 12:12

'Part of the family'. Is that what we're calling it now?

Does that mean we'll be inviting all those other formerly colonised countries to join the Empire again?

And how exactly do the various famines, massacres, cultural vandalism and various other Imperial jollies fit into the faaaaamily dynamic?

borntobequiet · 03/02/2019 12:16

Did someone say Where Is Gove? Has he been out and about on the TV today?

1tisILeClerc · 03/02/2019 12:28

{And how exactly do the various famines, massacres, cultural vandalism and various other Imperial jollies fit into the faaaaamily dynamic?}

It's the strange uncle that lives in Transylvania that you usually keep quiet about.
Has a good collection of 'ism's ' to his name. Sex, race, post colonial etc.

BigChocFrenzy · 03/02/2019 12:34

irene, susan Some hardline ERG MPs were advocating a GE on the Thursday after Brexit

precisely to close down Parliament for the 5 weeks before and hence close down any actions to avoid No Deal

They don't care if this worsens the chaos, because

a) their hedge fund makes even more profit betting against Sterling & British businesses
or
b) they have MaryJoyce's faith that nothing bad can happen, because we're British

DangermousesSidekick · 03/02/2019 12:34

I'd like to see a petition for begging asking any other EU country to take in Britain's remainers. I'd sign it.

I hope that one has been set up as a spoof.

So presumably people like Rees-Mogg can NEVER be rich enough?

BigChocFrenzy · 03/02/2019 12:43

MissBel There are often multiple reasons for firms cutting back or pulling out
Brexit can often be the final straw when a decision might otherwise have been made narrowly to stay.

The EU-Japan FTA will remove tariffs within about 5 years, on a sliding scale
Although it will then be a huge free trade zone covering â…“ of the world's GDP, that is not the same as "frictionless trade"
i.e. afaik, there will still be some NTBs (Non-tariff barriers)

So it is possible that - without Brexit - Japanese firms would have had at least one additional model cycle - about 4 years for cars - before stopping new investment,
or they might have decided that proximity and no NTBs made it worthwhile to keep investing in the UK, to retain an EU base.

Now, Brexit has put a heavy hand on one side of the decision scale.

Bloody hell, batshit Brexiters think Irexit is a great favour to offer Ireland Confused
Isn't Irish history taught at schools at all now ?

and don't they listen to / believe Varadkar and Coveney - the Irish Pm and Deputy PM -
or do they assume they are running a dictatorship in Ireland which Briatin will help them overthrow ?

92% of Irish people want to remain in the EU

About 50% of Irish trade is with the E27 countries, several times more than with the UK

Feeling so depressed this morning after hearing the news about Nissan. This sotuation is having a major impact on my mental health which is already struggling due to family trauma. The worst thing is there's nothing I can do, it's like watching the world's biggest car crash happening in front of you in slow motion. Sorry to blurb but there's not many places I can say that and people will get it.

prettybird · 03/02/2019 12:49

Tonsills - get with the programme..... rich people need to be given more money (tax reductions, tax breaks, tax avoidance schemes, hedging....) in order to incentivise them to "work" harder. Poor people need to have money taken away from them so that they starve are incentivised to work harder. Hmm

Isn't that what austerity is all about? Confused

LonelyandTiredandLow · 03/02/2019 12:50

Hmm, do I trust Javid on the of UK after No Deal or the head of the Met counter-terrorism chief? Hmm Toughie.

How can Javid say we will be one of the safest countries in the world if leaving with No Deal invalidates the peace process? Confused

LonelyandTiredandLow · 03/02/2019 12:55

Thank you pretty think the word safety got eaten and became a 404 error. Sounds about right in the current context Grin.

Expat pensioners in Spain reportedly evenly divided about Brexit

Leavers are angry, want May to "just leave" and they claim Spain can't afford to deny them healthcare, because "they need us more than we need them"Confused

colouringinpro · 03/02/2019 13:02

Thanks elenade, destiel. Much appreciated.

I need to try and step away from the news for a bit.

BigChocFrenzy · 03/02/2019 13:04

Brexit: Theresa May 'determined' to leave EU in March

So she's still against an extension, at least before the WA is passed.

Also reminds us of what other reports have said:
It's not just the backstop hloding things up - some Brexiters would vote against the WA for other things they hate about it

NO chance the EU will offer her anything legally binding before Valentine's vote

imo, No Deal now is by far the most likely outcome, around 70% chanceSad

prettybird · 03/02/2019 13:04

That Spanish article is just Shock[shockConfused

I particularly like the doublethink in this bit "Like many others in the region, he is convinced that Britons in Spain bring too much financially to the country – and save the NHS too much in care costs – to force pensioners like him home." Confused

DGRossetti · 03/02/2019 13:05

How can Javid say we will be one of the safest countries in the world if leaving with No Deal invalidates the peace process?

Just for context, you're more likely to be killed by a police officer than a terrorist in the UK over the past 20 years. Police drivers especially.

(I wonder how an evidence-based policy would address that ?)
