Brexit

How scared are you of brexit?

Because I’m trying to work out if I’m a normal amount of scared or if I’m losing it.

I’m terrified of the recession that is looming after brexit, increased food prices, reduced public spending, which will lead to more homelessness and misery and perhaps even more violence on the streets. I’m terrified of the NHS being privatised, of not having access to cheap fruit and vegetables, of not being able to travel to europe.

Perhaps most of all I’m scared of a return to the troubles in Northern Ireland. I can’t velieve people would rather have a border than a backstop.

I’m scared of the way Eu migrants are being treated and how normal it has become for the Eu to be hated and mocked and blamed for everything. I’m scared of what this is doing to my friends, my colleagues, my community. I feel complicit and I don’t know how to protest or complain.

I’m a Londoner, and I’m scared of the ‘metropolitan elite’ conspiracy theories that both the left and the right seen to hold about people like me (I guess I’m what could be called ‘a centrist’). It makes me scared to talk about any of this.

I’m terrified for the future of our country, for my son’s future, for my elderly parents’ future, for our jobs. We are small, community minded people with small incomes. I spend a lot of my time volunteering in the local community. I feel like I should have been getting rich and hoarding money instead because it’s all going to be dog eat dog very soon.

I am losing sleep. I can’t concentrate at work. I find myself bursting into tears and getting angry for no reason other than a total; overwhelming fear of the future. I feel like my future has been taken away. Am i going mad? Or is it just the uncertainty? Or am I really part of an elite that can’t handle change?

For what it’s worth, I think the Eu needs to reform and the uk needs a big political shake up. But I think brexit is going to make all our problems worse, not better.

Does anyone else feel this way?

I’ve read it all now.

I am sure the person with the 2nd home in France will suffer more than the single mum on Universal credit who does not have the money to feed her family due to increase in food prices.

bubblewire · 03/02/2019 12:09

Ooh, Spinflight are you Farage in disguise, he is always going on about Junker being a drunk.

bubblewire · 03/02/2019 12:10

@Random18 I think that person might be hairy handed...

FishesaPlenty · 03/02/2019 12:10

They'll just pass that cost on to the purchasers though, so it won't cost BMW a penny, except in lost sales.

In total that's billions extra which will be paid by UK consumers and businesses and will end up with the Treasury.

But yes, that may enable them to decrease income taxes from what they're otherwise going to have to increase them to.

Spinflight · 03/02/2019 12:11

Didn't realise it was a secret!

Lol

Marmaladehandbag · 03/02/2019 12:18

Thanks bubblewire

I do tell myself I'm being silly, but when I watch the very people who are in control of this being completely unable to pull together for everyone's benefit, I do feel it's justified.

I'm more worried about food and general baby supplies than anything, and the birth not going well and baby and I needing medical intervention after. Not expecting huge civil unrest - not very British - but there will always be a few idiots who are just up for trashing and looting whatever the issue.

Shock horror, 'elderly people can get a bit unsteady on their feet'.
While he is a significant figurehead in the EU he has virtually no powers on his own.
Compare and contrast what Mr Junker and Farage are trying to achieve in Europe.

Spinflight · 03/02/2019 13:45

"Shock horror, 'elderly people can get a bit unsteady on their feet'."

Especially after a bottle of Brandy before lunch!

Add another half a bottle after lunch and... Well they start slapping people silly.

Then again he is by no means the only one. Wine at the very least is generally free at every event.

1tisILeClerc · 03/02/2019 13:50

{Especially after a bottle of Brandy before lunch!}
He still has a more humane and citizen spirited outlook for everyone in Europe unlike the shitheads in Westminster who, after deciding what to do with Brexit THEN need to start to fix the things about the UK that needed fixing.

Spinflight · 03/02/2019 14:26

How spirited depends upon the length of the lunch.

lol

PloddingOnwards · 03/02/2019 14:36

@bellinisurge

I need to stock up on supplies for myself, six year old, 1 year old and a 4month old baby. I am starting to worry after realising I'm not being stupid and actually many others are feeling the same as me!
I haven't prepped for anything however I sure am going to first thing in the morning once I've taken my daughter to school and clear a drawer out for our secret supplies.

I'm not able to freeze anything without anyone else knowing as myself and children live at a family members so if I do stock up I feel I'd have to feed the other three members aswell as they arnt prepping and think I'm crazy!

Gosh this is a nightmare!

bellinisurge · 03/02/2019 15:20

It's such a tricky one especially if you are staying with family and not everyone is thinking the same way about things. FWIW, I'd say your priority is being as calm as you can for your little crew - I know it is totally unhelpful to tell someone to be calm! If you can make sure that e.g the doctors knows where you are so you can access assistance with food or whatever if necessary .
If you can put aside a day or twos food - stuff you are all prepared to get by on - that can't hurt. Stick it in a hold-all under your bed if necessary.

Gronky · 03/02/2019 15:53

Those stocking up, have you considered the following:

-Not buying food locally, to avoid being identified as a potential source if required by people in your area
-Only paying in cash so it's harder for, as an example, an unscrupulous and desperate bank employee to identify you as someone with food and other supplies
-Keeping a smaller, decoy stockpile in case the unthinkable happens and someone tries to force you to hand it over, so you're not as badly affected
-Identifying body washes and shampoos that work well with cold water, in case cold showers are the order of the month(s)
-Only unpacking your car under cover of night so neighbours don't see you carrying large amounts of supplies into the house
-Preparing yourself physically with moderate levels of exercise while food is plentiful to minimise the impact of physical wasting

bellinisurge · 03/02/2019 16:08

@Gronky , that's more of a general prepper conversation which I and other preppers would be happy to have with you on the Prepper topic. I think this particular thread is to try and dial down the anxiety .

Maryjoyce · 03/02/2019 16:10

The more I read the more screw loose some of you are

bellinisurge · 03/02/2019 16:13

If you only look at extremes, @Maryjoyce , that's what you'll see. Plenty of measured advice and comment on here. But as that doesn't fit with your world view, you won't see it.

Gronky · 03/02/2019 16:19

Thank you, bellinisurge

Maryjoyce · 03/02/2019 16:34

Well just look at Gronkys advice it sounds like all out war we’re heading too. Never heard so much rubbish in all my life.

bellinisurge · 03/02/2019 16:42

@Maryjoyce , I have directed Gronky over to the Preppers topic. It is what general Preppers often talk about. Prepping for Brexit is different.

Please ask me a question on my I am a prepper AMA , if you want to discuss prepping.
Or head on over to The Litter Tray and tell everyone how you think cats are shit. Helpful contribution as always Hmm

time4chocolate · 03/02/2019 16:45

Wow Gronky my jaw is actually on the floor. Each to their own if prepping is your thing but, what on earth have you been reading to even be thinking about those measures. I think a step back is required for your own mental wellbeing (and I genuinely mean that).

bellinisurge · 03/02/2019 16:48

Again, @time4chocolate , this is a the sort of thing general Preppers discuss. I suspect Gronky is a general prepper.
If your focus is Brexit, I would say that apart from doing what you can to keep fit and not telling all and sundry that you are prepping, you probably don't need it.

Maryjoyce · 03/02/2019 16:48

Prepers are preparing for all our war are they?
I have a feeling the looney bins will soon be very full

Maryjoyce · 03/02/2019 16:51

Like a page out of “Day of the triffids “. In my mind as just re read it

bellinisurge · 03/02/2019 16:53

@Maryjoyce , if you don't like general prepping, that's fine. I don't like shaving pubic hair but a lot of people on MN seem to do it.
People prepping for Brexit are not general Preppers. By all means dig out my "I'm a prepper AMA" that I did several months ago. However, trying to create a narrative that people prepping for Brexit are the same as general Preppers is a waste of time.
Much like me slagging off people who shave their pubic hair.

Peridot1 · 03/02/2019 16:53

I suspect Gronky is on a wind up mission tbh!
