And I still don’t know what to do.
I’m really torn because I really really really want to go and have been looking forward to it for a year.

OTOH we’d lose £3,000. At least right now we will only lose the deposit and can move the flights - although heaven knows until when.

Flying with Air France, four night break two weeks post brexit.

I just don’t know. Sensibly I should cancel and then if / when brexit is delayed I will feel really cheated. But if we don’t cancel and if / when no deal happens we could end up with no holiday and £3k down.

I am immensely fucked off.

Cheekysquirrel · 26/01/2019 19:56

Will the Eurostar be any better?
Argh.
I keep waiting and waiting and thinking it’ll get clearer but no no.

*FFS can everyone stop citing the freckling Millennium Bug when folk talk about brexit

Thousand of people worked on it for years to prevent it from having an effect*

Yeh and we were still advised not to travel and definitely not to fly anytime around 31st December 1999. To be fair, the MB was a bit if a clusterfuck too and the scaremongering was on a par with what we have now. We were predicted meltdown of just about all aspects of everything (even with the thousands of people working on it) but it did not come to pass. I think that's why people make the connection because so many of us lived through the MB.

FlyingCat · 26/01/2019 19:58

Do you have travel insurance?

If so you’re covered for cancellation so no loss.

If you have no insurance I have limited sympathy to your dilemma.

Orchidflower1 · 26/01/2019 20:00

Not the point of the thread op but I was going to say my ds is did dlp by plane and wished she’d got train as it’s right in the centre ( the station) but you have a transfer for plane- obvs depends if you’re coming from Scotland tho!

Todayissunny · 26/01/2019 20:04

I haven't booked yet bur want to fly the othet way. I'm worried about flying into chaos.
I'm sure flights will be going though. I read that into and out of the UK will be fine but British airlines won't be able to operate inside the EU.

Cheekysquirrel · 26/01/2019 20:04

I have insurance but insurance doesn’t cover brexit unless I’m wrong. I don’t think I am though.

Very quick to google
www.abta.com/tips-and-advice/brexit-advice-for-travellers

Deal or no deal planes will still fly.

MajesticWhine · 26/01/2019 20:14

I would go ahead. Seems likely the deadline will be extended anyway. No deal still not the most likely option. I am planning to book a European holiday and will do so before Brexit is sorted.

'Lived through the MB' how we laughed!

'Lived through the MB' how we laughed!
I remember waking up on 1st January (hungover as fuck) gradually realising that nothing had changed. No planes had dropped out of the sky. I could still watch TV, listen to the radio, use my phone. Nothing had changed. After all that hype and hysteria ...

Whatdoiwanttohear · 26/01/2019 21:26

Of course it hadn't because millions were spent both in hours and money on making sure it didn't Hmm. My DH is in IT and I felt very reassured knowing that so much was being done to avert any type of crisis.

LemonGirl · 26/01/2019 21:37

Flights will continue as normal. IThere is little room financially or othrwise in the aviation and its worldwide associated industries to just chop thousands of flights mid March.
The worst that will happen is more paperwork and longer queues with regards to immigration.
Absolutely worst case where your flight gets cancelled- say due to fog/technical issues which is much more likely than Brexit, you can easily get to Disneyland Paris by several other means. Yes you would probably arrive later but you could very easily get there the same day.
Thousands of people are still booking their summer holidays to Greece, Spain etc every day.

famousfour · 26/01/2019 21:52

I’m pretty sure the EU have already said flights to and from Britain will continue to fly.

Boyskeepswinging · 26/01/2019 21:52

Well bully for you and your DH. Meanwhile us civilians were being led to believe that it was going to be Armageddon on 31st December. Do you not remember all the advice about not travelling, especially not flying as aeroplanes would fall from the sky on the stroke of midnight?

Todayissunny · 26/01/2019 21:53

As we got closer to y2k everyone knew it was going to be ok because so much work had be done to avoid disaster - not quite comparable to Brexit.

LemongIrl - if legal bits are not put in place it won't make a difference if there is roo financially or otherwise. However I believe the legal bits are in place and flights between UK and France won't be cancelled.

But visas might be needed etc..

Cheekysquirrel · 26/01/2019 22:02

No I think we are ok on the visa front.
From what I can make out there will be a €7 fee at some point to add information that will avoid a visa but it isn’t coming into force straight away.
I don’t think tourists will need visas.

Am I the only one who can remember the hype and hysteria? I don't remember anyone thinking it was going to be OK. Yes, work had been done but we were being told that it had been too little too late and that there were a gazillion scenarios that had not been rectified in time.

goldengummybear · 26/01/2019 22:15

The millennium bug panic was averted because thousands of people like me were hired to change computer code to cope. The hysteria was well before 31.12.99 and private firms planned and spent lots of money averting disaster so nothing happened.

In stark contrast we know little about what planning the UK government has done bar some medication and food stockpiling.

I give up. It's like talking to a brick wall.

ssd · 26/01/2019 22:34

I didn't even think about this

Whatdoiwanttohear · 26/01/2019 22:36

You choose not to listen to what everyone is saying boys? In any case even if y2k was overblown it doesn't follow that this will be does it, because no-body knows what will happen do they!!

jasjas1973 · 26/01/2019 23:17

@Boyskeepswinging

the only brick wall is you! your not listening!

I worked on business telephone systems, 2 digits dates were not being recognised in older systems, we up graded them, we tested PC software patched and tested again.
We also tested navy dockyard, hospital systems (for birth date recognition) and city dealer boards 90% were fine but bugs were found and fixed or s/w h/w replaced.

Yes sure, the 'papers ran the stupid stuff on planes etc but Y2K was unavoidable, Brexit can and should be stopped, acting of the will of people who ve not clue what they are talking about is not a wise thing to do.

OP why don't you book on a CC ? i'm sure you would be covered if you do receive the service expected under the 1974 consumer credit act.

Random18 · 26/01/2019 23:25

I think you’ll be fine!!

And £3k for 4 nights in DLH is a bargain!!!!!

PoutySprout · 26/01/2019 23:29

Do you remember the millennium when everyone said that all the computers would crash at midnight and they didn't! That will be brexit. It's scaremongering, it's ridiculous.
If you want to go on your holiday then go on it.

You’re comparing apples and monkeys.
