Westminstenders: A vote too far?

The ECJ have ruled that the UK can unilaterally revoke A50.

There maybe lots of other news today, but that's the big one.

May has her big vote tomorrow. Or does she.

Will she survive until the end of the week?

But as they were taught in public school:

"Don't touch it, or it'll drop off"

Alwaysbekind2014 · 10/12/2018 21:47

The mace is an old thing basically it should be in the room for debate to take place it is like the queens permission to have the debat in HoC.
If the mace isn’t there then it’s contempt ... which I think he was making a point !

LouiseCollins28 · 10/12/2018 21:48

Represents the authority of the Crown in Parliament. Picking it up as a protest is “not the done thing” though it has happened before

Alwaysbekind2014 · 10/12/2018 21:51

If she is Berlin by the way does that mean she won’t be at emergency debate tomorrow ?

RedToothBrush · 10/12/2018 21:51

Here's what a censure motion is.

Read it carefully...

Looks like the DUP are threatening to pull the plug on the government (trigger a ge).

That sounds, in reality, like a klaxon to tell the Tories to get the letters in (and the vote against May to spring a GE is just part of the show).

Remember today Labour, the LDs, the SNP, plaid and the greens said they were interested in a no confidence vote.

With the DUP they have the majority of the house...

So censure is the same as no confidence?

BigChocFrenzy · 10/12/2018 21:53

The PM has no shame; she'll survive at all costs

and we had the most disgustingly shameless foreign Secretary in modern times,
followed by another who caught the shameless cooties off Boris's smelly chair

and the whole govt is shameless that it is carrying out the most complicated and far-reaching changes anyone has attempted for an industrialised country ... and it has no idea what to do, or even what it wants

So it's no surprise if the entire HoC is somewhat unpracticed in the shame department

RedToothBrush · 10/12/2018 21:57

That's what I seen to be reading censure = no confidence.

The rumour has been going around all evening, but without the numbers it's just talk.

With the DUP on board it potentially means it's serious and not just an idea and it could happen.

Could being the word doing a lot of work here. The DUP are negotiating with May and the Cons.

OP posts:
BigChocFrenzy · 10/12/2018 21:57

Are the DUP really gambling that the Tories will overthrow May and elect / acclaim a hard Brexiter,
all within 14 days ?

Or are they willing to risk having Corbyn as PM - who has always wanted a united Ireland and has cosied up to the DUP's IRA bogeymen ?

At least May keeps going on about her "precious union"

RedToothBrush · 10/12/2018 21:59

Labour Whips @ labourwhips
Mr Speaker has granted an application, from @jeremycorbyn for an emergency 🚨 three hour debate tomorrow, under standing order 24, on the Prime Minister’s unprecedented decision to cancel the meaningful vote without the agreement of the House.

Three hours of attacking May.

By every one.

OP posts:
TokyoSushi · 10/12/2018 22:01

What will the debate achieve tomorrow though? 3 hours of everyone piling in sating 'the deal is shit' 'May is Shit' 'it's all shit' etc etc, you get the picture!

We all know that, something needs to actually happen, a real proper, no confidence motion probably the nest bet, May clearly will not step down and will have to be pushed out.

MissMalice · 10/12/2018 22:01

Has May actually got anything left to lose?
She’s going to end up doing a Cameron - whatever bloody mess we end up with remain-with-angry-leavers, Mays-deal-no-one-wants or accidental-but-not-really-no-deal; she’ll waltz off into the sunset, no consequences.

BigChocFrenzy · 10/12/2018 22:02

They can negotiate with each other in circles until they all turn into butter

The EU have repeatedly stated that the backstop is not time limited and cannot be unilaterally revoked by the UK.
The only possibility is a clause to stay in transition instead of activating the backstop.

TokyoSushi · 10/12/2018 22:02

I can't see that breakfast with Mark Rutte is going to be a barrel of laughs in the morning either!

BigChocFrenzy · 10/12/2018 22:03

All the debate will achieve is the appearance of Corbyn having done something.

He was embarassing his party even more than usual, by being so helpless in front of an open goal.

RedToothBrush · 10/12/2018 22:04

What will it achieve?

Well it will be a record on handsard stating whose fault it all was....

OP posts:
LouiseCollins28 · 10/12/2018 22:04

Frankly what is the point of that. 3 hours of speeches on the deal and the vote on it is pointless IMO

MissMalice · 10/12/2018 22:04

The only possibility is a clause to stay in transition instead of activating the backstop.
Which will impress hardly anyone.

MissMalice · 10/12/2018 22:06

I’m surprised there’s no more talk of overthrowing Corbyn. It’s been more than 12mo since the last NC vote for him hasn’t it?

BigChocFrenzy · 10/12/2018 22:09

Beware:
Brexiters see a leadership contest as their chance to get a Brexiter PM and a guaranteed No Deal
Seeing how Grieve & co keep getting outmanoeuvred, I'm concerned they don't know how to use their elbows

At least with May, there is a chance she'll blink on 29 March and Revoke,
because she doesn't actually want No Deal.

colouringinpro · 10/12/2018 22:10

Gary Lineker tweet "it's looking like No Deal, what do You want?"
60% replies: No Deal
Lots assuming this is WTO rules.
Most people have no f**king idea.

BigChocFrenzy · 10/12/2018 22:11

MissMalice It avoids activating the backstop and is in effect extending transition for as long as needed
It removes the time pressure penalty on the Uk, to agree to unfavourable terms, just to avoid the backstop

frumpety · 10/12/2018 22:12

Sorry to be all harky backy , but does anyone think the NDA's might be time specific or circumstance specific ? What has the Government promised industry to keep it mute or what have they been threatened with?

RedToothBrush · 10/12/2018 22:16

Robert Peston@peston
However @YvetteCooperMP teases out of Speaker Bercow that if we slip into no-deal Brexit territory, MPs may not have a right to vote on that. Which will put blind fear into many MPs

At the start of the day I'd have said remain looking likely by the end I feel that to stop no deal we are going to need a flipping miracle.

Lisa o'carroll @ lisaocarroll
BREAKING: Varadkar and Tusk just spoken. They agreed that preparations for no deal will now intensify.

"They agreed that the W/A is best option and could not be renegotiated. They also agreed that preparations for a ‘no deal’ outcome should intensify," said Varadkar in sttmnt

EU seem to be thinking similar
