Westminstenders: A vote too far?

The ECJ have ruled that the UK can unilaterally revoke A50.

There maybe lots of other news today, but that's the big one.

May has her big vote tomorrow. Or does she.

Will she survive until the end of the week?

Donald Tusk @ eucopresident
I have decided to call #EUCO on #Brexit (Art. 50) on Thursday. We will not renegotiate the deal, including the backstop, but we are ready to discuss how to facilitate UK ratification. As time is running out, we will also discuss our preparedness for a no-deal scenario.

Nick Gutteridge @nick_gutteridge
Tusk foreshadows what we all suspect is coming - an EU Council declaration 'clarifying' the scope of the backstop and the fact that neither side ever intends for it to come into force. Council declarations carry serious weight, but they are ultimately political statements.

Kate McCann @kateemccann
Jacob Rees Mogg just told journalists even if May removes backstop from Withdrawal Agreement completely it won’t be enough. Calls delay “pointless” because result is inevitable ‘unless there is a new Prime Minister’

He said today has been “a damaging day for the Conservative party and a humiliating day for the country” which will ultimately leave Britain closer to a no-deal Brexit than before.

Meanwhile in Russia

Scott Stedman @scormstedman
Russia is amassing military hardware on the Ukraine border and starting an expansive online disinformation campaign spreading false flag theories. The world needs to wake up to Putin’s moves before it’s too late for our important ally.

Hundreds of Russian tanks are now positioned near the Ukraine border:

.@andrealeadsom says the Grieve amendment to the programme motion will not be incorporated in the new business motion, but that motion will be amendable

Some talk that the Speaker refuted this, but yeah... Grieve III Worthless.

{Arlene Foster made clear to May that the backstop must go}
And 500 Million people say it should stay.

DoctorTwo · 10/12/2018 19:09

I fear May is so stubborn she would prefer to crash out rather than have her shit 'deal' defeated.

Good news keeps coming for Tory MPs. Julian Smith: you’re on a three line whip all week because Labour might try to do us when the PM is out of the country

What will happen now then? Nothing until a vote sometime in January?!

How crap does TM have to be before we can get rid of her??

Are the speeches of the 164 fall and they will have to apply to speak again asks @Dr_PhilippaW

It would not be in the national interest to have the vote now says @andrealeadsom

Can someone please try to explain why Corbyn isn't calling a vote of no confidence

bellinisurge · 10/12/2018 19:27

I'm guessing he thinks he'd lose. A no-confidence vote in the government is not the same as no- confidence in the leader.
The DUP have not said the "confidence and supply deal" is at an end. That is the confidence bit. Tories, even ERG twats would support the government over the opposition.

RedToothBrush · 10/12/2018 19:27

Pat McFadden @ patmcfaddenmp
Now the Speaker tells the Leader of the House the Grieve amendment stands. This really is chaotic. The Government is making it up by the minute.

The Crown v Parliament

Look out for the constitutional crisis if the government continues with this one. It might not be legally binding but the Speaker saying it must be respected and not merely over ruled in this manner makes it dodgy ground.

We are talking the Crown over stepping the limits of its power... Not because they say its not legally binding and they don't have to observe it but because they try and use procedure to kill it instead, which the Speaker says they can't do and isn't valid.

The Brexit deal is a humiliation.

We are humiliatingly unprepared for a no deal Brexit.

Cancelling Brexit will be a humiliating reversal.

So the question is: which national humiliation will we choose?

Speaker will take points of order after the Brexit secretary’s statement.

Somehow I think this will be important...

I thought Theresa May was a Remain supporter so I don't understand why she is so determined to get her agreement through and not have a second referendum, unless she is just thinking of her own political future

WhiffofSnell · 10/12/2018 19:35

Does anyone still believe the world isn't pissing itself laughing at the UK Rocky Horror Show

Nah. Rest of the world has got its own problems. They either don't care or are a bit bewildered.

I reckon we'll revoke and wander back into the EU, pretending we just nipped out to use the loo and the r27 will politely budge up to let us back at our place at the table and we'll just carry on and it not be mentioned again.

RedToothBrush · 10/12/2018 19:38

Parly @parlyapp
This is a most unfortunate situation says Ken Clarke - we are going towards leaving with no deal at all and Article 50 needs to be looked at

OP posts:
howabout · 10/12/2018 19:38

Sorry just catching up.

Chuka Umuna (looking his usual dapper self) reckons no point Labour calling vote of No Confidence as wouldn't win. Labour also boxed into corner as can't backtrack to support TM's deal.

Therefore I think Somerville is right. The ERG will just sit tight and let No Deal happen unless Government / Parliament finds a way to extend / revoke Art 50.

I think that then would give the window for GE and then straight Remain / Leave (no point in putting any sort of deal on the ballot is there?)

OlennasWimple · 10/12/2018 19:39

As things currently stand, the Commons is due to rise on Dec 20th and return on Jan 7th

So there's still 10 days to go, even if they don't extend the sitting plans - and to be honest, the only real scope to do this is to sit on Friday 21st as well, given how the weekend then Christmas Eve / Christmas Day falls

("Make them sit all Christmas!" I hear you say. Well, consider the many many people who also work in Parliament who would also not be able to enjoy their Christmas as planned and think whether this is reasonable and fair to them)

RedToothBrush · 10/12/2018 19:39

Parly @parlyapp
Government must consider revoking Article 50 to save us from the disastrous scenario of no deal says Ken Clarke

OP posts:
howabout · 10/12/2018 19:39

Interesting KC is saying that Red. He was TM Deal vaguely supportive earlier.

1tisILeClerc · 10/12/2018 19:47

{I reckon we'll revoke and wander back into the EU, pretending we just nipped out to use the loo and the r27 will politely budge up to let us back at our place at the table and we'll just carry on and it not be mentioned again.}
Nice try but there is the matter of many Billion being spend on infrastructure , personnel and planning and all those youtube clips of UK politicians slagging off so many EU presidents and diplomats worldwide.
It might have worked before the internet but not now sunshine!
