Westminstenders: A vote too far?

The ECJ have ruled that the UK can unilaterally revoke A50.

There maybe lots of other news today, but that's the big one.

May has her big vote tomorrow. Or does she.

Will she survive until the end of the week?

but we are ready to discuss how to facilitate UK ratification

What does this mean?

TheElementsSong · 10/12/2018 18:23

Have Corbynites finally given up on Magic Grandad's Cunning Plan?

Alex Wickham @alexwickham
NEW: Theresa May warned she must hold a vote on her Brexit deal before Christmas or be ousted

Both Leave and Remain MPs say she is trying to run down the clock

May also told to set out red lines on what she won't accept in her new talks with Brussels

Angry MPs Are Warning Theresa May Not To Delay Her Brexit Vote Beyond Christmas
“Colleagues are so angry they’d happily vote on Christmas Day,” one MP told BuzzFeed News.

Things that bad?!

BigChocFrenzy · 10/12/2018 18:24

red This is what worries me,
bad enough that there is no HoC majority for any sensible policy,
but also we are in a constitutional void and could suddenly stumble accidentally over the edge of the cliff

We've gone off the edge of the map of the known universe

"Here Be Dragons"

BollocksToBrexit · 10/12/2018 18:27

And Boris is still favourite to take over if May falls. FFS.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 10/12/2018 18:27

They won't really break for Christmas will they?

GD12 · 10/12/2018 18:29

There's not much more to say over Christmas. Not much MPs can do.

TatianaLarina · 10/12/2018 18:29

Grinchly -

Crashing out date nears, motion of no confidence, national government, application for extension or revocation of A50.

Westminstenders: A vote too far?
BigChocFrenzy · 10/12/2018 18:30

This is a dead parrot
MPs STILL don't get it:

A backstop, by definition, cannot be temporary or revocable unilaterally by the UK

Of course, ultimately the UK, like any country, can walk away from any treaty or deal if it is prepared to face the consequences:

its international reputation would be thoroughly trashed and the EU would not negotiate on anything further
So, yes we'd be screwed ... but we'd have sovereignty & blue passports & no FOM

TatianaLarina · 10/12/2018 18:30

but we are ready to discuss how to facilitate UK ratification

It means tea and sympathy while sniggering in the kitchen.

MissMalice · 10/12/2018 18:30

I believe the threat of “vote for my deal or you won’t get Christmas break” was used previously so continuing the 180 theme, there will be a Christmas break.

GD12 · 10/12/2018 18:30

DUP wouldn't vote against government in vote of no confidence.

Bearbehind · 10/12/2018 18:31

What does this mean?

I think it just means they’ll stroke our head and tell us it will all be OK ie, just provide the ‘reassurance’ that TM has created this shit show for.

TatianaLarina · 10/12/2018 18:31

What does this mean? ^^ reply to.

GD12 · 10/12/2018 18:32

I don't even think it's about renegotiating, it's about running the clock down.

TatianaLarina · 10/12/2018 18:33

DUP wouldn't vote against government in vote of no confidence.

Arlene Foster made clear to May that the backstop must go. May gave Dodds no assurance of any amendment - because she can’t - upshot may well be that DUP withdraw support.

plaidlife · 10/12/2018 18:33

I agree, May has two options her deal or no deal. If she leaves it to the last minute she thinks her deal will get through.

One of the last vestiges of a brutal colonial past has bitten us hard in the bum and may yet bite our jugular:

All because back in the early 20th century, the Tory party - yes, mainly them again - refused to accept the democratic Irish vote for Independence
and forcibly split off NI to maintain Unionist rule there.

Edward Carson then / DUP now, same tiny fanatical minority allowed to determine the fate of the whole UK:
"Ulster shall fight and Ulster shall be right"

BigChocFrenzy · 10/12/2018 18:39

I cannot remember seeing a government be so publicly savaged by its own MPs !

Yaralie · 10/12/2018 18:43

Utter shambles, but when they repeat the mantra "my deal, no deal or no brexit" I wish someone would ask what has to be done to bring about no brexit.

RedToothBrush · 10/12/2018 18:44

Michael Crick @ michaellcrick
After ERG meeting Jacob Rees-Mogg says he doesn’t think it’s possible to force a vote. He’s looked at the precedents and consulted the clerks and the precedents favour the Govt. Whoever puts down the motion has power to withdraw it, he says

Reed-Mogg refuses to speculate on number of letters: “I don’t think my credibility on letter-forecasting is very high,” he says.

That’s why May’s delaying strategy won’t work - she will get rugby tackled by her own side at this rate.

TatianaLarina · 10/12/2018 18:44

At least he’s got a sense of humour.

BigChocFrenzy · 10/12/2018 18:45

I'd rather May stayed than get Boris, though at least he has one victory:

Jason Cowleyy@JasonCowleyNS*

The Economist awards its idiot of the year to Boris Johnson:
“He failed miserably as foreign secretary ... a demagogue not a statesman, he is the most irresponsible politician the country has seen for many years.”

< must have been a lot of competition among past & present Tory ministers for this prize >
