Westminstenders: A vote too far?

RedToothBrush · 10/12/2018 09:16

The ECJ have ruled that the UK can unilaterally revoke A50.

There maybe lots of other news today, but that's the big one.

May has her big vote tomorrow. Or does she.

Will she survive until the end of the week?

Procedurally, May - or whoever else is then PM - can delay holding any vote until 28 March, the day before Brexit

UK House of Commons*@HouseofCommons*

Now the Government has made a statement that political agreement on withdrawal agreement & future framework has been reached, the requirements for the Government to make a statement to the House by 21 Jan on ‘no deal’ has been superseded. (1/2) #AskTheCommons
...
Replying to @HouseofCommons ....

In practice the latest date would be 28 March as matters stand. (2/2) #askthecommons

Hazardswan · 10/12/2018 17:45

I'm trying really hard not to boo at the telly.

And I'm very tempted to chant SNP SNP SNP SNP. Can we get a Scottish theme coup from the SNP?

A Scottish chip shop is doing a fresh Xmas dinner for four they have clearly got things going well there

mathanxiety · 10/12/2018 17:45

Place mat thing.

BigChocFrenzy · 10/12/2018 17:46

plaid "What is Labour doing ??"
Currently the square root of Fuck All

Since Corbyn is clueless, he should do what Nicola - a genuine leader - advises

BigChocFrenzy · 10/12/2018 17:49

dispute over 28 March as any / latest date for debate:

Henry Zeffmann@hzeffman*

Theresa May now disagreeing with the official House of Commons Twitter account's interpretation of law from the despatch box (via a question from Justine Greening). 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ < I may wear out this key >
Great.

Grinchly · 10/12/2018 17:51

May reminds me of a flustered vicar whose previously quiescent congregation are now vociferously claiming that God does not, in fact , exist.

BigChocFrenzy · 10/12/2018 17:51

Jo Maugham, having won his A50 case, is still trying to save us via the HoC:

Jo Maugham QC@JolyonMaugham

The Article 50 case is not over.
We are now going to ask Scotland's Highest Court to determine how Parliament can revoke the Article 50 Notice.

BigChocFrenzy · 10/12/2018 17:54

Ian Murray@IanMurrayMP

Following today’s farcical events by the Government, I have written with dozens of colleagues to ask Jeremy Corbyn to press a vote of no confidence this week and then go immediately for a
@peoplesvote_uk

< sod that. The HoC should have the courage to pass a motion to Revoke, then dare May not to carry it out - No Deal would be her fault alone then >

colouringinpro · 10/12/2018 17:56

We are the laughing stock of the world.
No nation will ever trust us in a negotiation again.
No-deal is now a significant risk which would be the end of Great Britain.

Please let there be some mechanism to stop this ghastly bunch of Tory degenerates sending us off the cliff!!!.

Grinchly · 10/12/2018 17:57

Wow massive slap, down to a heckler there by Bercow.

TatianaLarina · 10/12/2018 18:00

No-deal is now a significant risk which would be the end of Great Britain

This is just May’s poker face. Don’t fall for it. All of Parliament know no deal is political as well as economic suicide. She’s playing chicken.

BigChocFrenzy · 10/12/2018 18:01

Robert Peston@Peston

Under the UK's magnificent unwritten constitution,
all the government has to do to shelve this historic vote on our Brexit future - painstakingly negotiated and plotted for more than 18 months - is for the chief whip to shout "tomorrow" at around 8 tonight.
Mother of parliaments 😡

< #LaughingStockUK >

Grinchly · 10/12/2018 18:01

I wish I could be so sure tatiana

Hazardswan · 10/12/2018 18:05

I agree the opposition should push revoke. The compromise can be a people's vote with a no brexit option. and remain two choices only!

DaffoDeffo · 10/12/2018 18:06

What a fucking shitshow

Cue market and business uncertainty for a few more months. What a bloody disaster

RedToothBrush · 10/12/2018 18:07

If Grieve III in theory hits on 28th March and Maugham had gone to court and the Supreme Court said it was parliament who had to vote to authorise revocation and instruct the executive ... That's messy but could end in remain.

However Miller said that the power to exercise A50 was for the HoC to vote on to give it to the PM. Thus did they give the power to reverse A50 to the PM when they did so.

Also Miller was ruled on the basis that A50 could not be revoked. So does this changes this too.

So fuck knows. Good on Maugham though. It might well be needed and you want to hope that constitutionalky power lies with Parliament...

What a fucking shitshow. It's even worse than I feared.
Show of hands - who believes the UK can renegotiate a better deal?

MissMalice · 10/12/2018 18:10

This is beyond awful.

How is any of this democratic?

plaidlife · 10/12/2018 18:11

So Labours official offical position is to do nothing until May brings deal for a vote.
Could someone, anyone explain to Corbyn that there are bigger things at stake than him having another GE.

I watched this on the open air screen at London Bridge and it’s a memory that will always stay with me - complete strangers hugging each other, people draped in flags from all over the world. I felt so proud to be British, so proud of my city.
If Mo Farah tried to emigrate here now, he and his family would probably be living in one room, reliant on food bank vouchers and would then get deported. I still can’t believe this is actually happening.

jasjas1973 · 10/12/2018 18:14

@Bearbehind you were right and i was wromg, JC and the Labour position is beyond a joke, apologies.

TatianaLarina · 10/12/2018 18:18

Donald Tusk Donald Tusk@eucopresident

I have decided to call #EUCO on #Brexit (Art. 50) on Thursday. We will not renegotiate the deal, including the backstop, but we are ready to discuss how to facilitate UK ratification. As time is running out, we will also discuss our preparedness for a no-deal scenario.

1tisILeClerc · 10/12/2018 18:19

{Where is the opposition!!!!???}
Well Corbyn is on his allotment getting the winter veg sown as he has heard there might be a bit of a shortage next spring.

Bearbehind · 10/12/2018 18:21

I wish I could be pleased to be right @jasjas1973 but it’s no pleasure in such circumstances.

Thanks for the apologies though 😊

TatianaLarina · 10/12/2018 18:22

a) Corbyn is follower not a leader b) he quite fancies Brexit.
